Several times a year, thousands of sea turtles make their way to this beach in Ostional Wildlife Refuge to lay their eggs. Egg harvesting has been legalized in this area to generate income for the community and encourage conservation. Harvesting sea turtle eggs is usually frowned upon, but for this community, it has been legalized and regulated. What are your thoughts on this system?

@@MRKRG9 Turtles at many beaches across the world suffer from poaching for their meat/shell and the illegal harvesting of eggs, but here in the Ostional Wildlife Refuge the turtles are protected by the local community. During the rainy season, the turtles come ashore once a month to lay their eggs. A biologist is hired by the community to count the turtles and decide when there are enough turtles to start the harvest. Naturally, many of the eggs are dug up and broken by the turtles themselves because of the high nesting density, so by the locals harvesting

The system stinks! NG needs to educate these stupid people to switch their diet to chicken eggs from turtle eggs. Shame on NG for encouraging the consumption of turtle eggs!!!!!

This video is excellent. John A, why not have the locals cut down the surrounding forests to create chicken farms? “Let them eat cake” right John? Oh, I’m sure this quote from Marie Antoinette and why you basically quoted her, flys over your head. Your ignorance of and lack of consideration for the people that live with these turtles at the places where they nest, causes you to criticize the very best means of protecting the turtles. They are harvesting a small fraction of the eggs for human consumption. In doing so a far greater percentage of hatchlings survive than would otherwise. This is exactly what the world needs more of. Upholding the dignity of local human populations and thinking of their needs also helps and is good for the turtles. John, your thinking is barely skin deep, and typical of band wagon environmentalists, who don’t care to study the particulars of a given environmental situation resulting in terrible solutions to important and complex environmental problems. This video is beautiful, thank you NG.
