they actually spend their last moments moving water over the eggs for oxygen for the babies, and by guarding them constantly, they starve to death.

They are so beautiful and intelligent! It hurts that people hunt and eat them. At my local aquarium, I actually befriended two of them. Whenever I visited, the octopus would always come right up to the glass and watch me curiously. Nobody else but me. When it died a few months later and a new octopus was brought in, the same thing happened. It came up to me and watched me every time I visited. They both recognized me

they grow incredibly fast only live 1 to 2 years and there are quite many of them.. so why not eat them? saving a big number of crabs in the process ;)

That was incredible! I had no idea their ink was dangerous to other marine animals, including themselves. Such interesting creatures, pity they end up on the menu in some or most, countries, an animal with such intelligence & short lifespan shouldn't be a meal.

What I like most about them, is the fact, that they can change their color to the environment. It makes them kind of invisible.

They are cute in their own way, I like how each of their species has an individual personality and behavior and it's cool the way they hide and shape them selfs and more cool that they are pretty smart and the fact they can play is surprising for me

They have more neurons then dogs for example, even though they are so much smaller. They are super smart :) They can also recognize individual humans. I know of one octopus, who always squirts water at one guy, when he comes to close to the tank (No idea why he doesn't like him...) They have surprisingly good aim

I think they only die when they MATE! if they dont mate and if theyre TRAPPED on Zoos or shyts like that, they will probably live longer but it would be a torture, cause those are JAILS for innocent beings

Cool fact but I’m not so sure one heart gets an attack if it is the one that pumps blood through the head it’s dead. If it’s one for the arm they are probably dead not being able to move or grab stuff unless you were taking care of him

2 hearts are there to pump blood through the gills and absorb oxygen. This allows them to get a lot of oxygen out of the water, even if they are not moving. That is necessary for their gigantic brains. Some fish, including most sharks, drown when they don't move (octopuses hunt small sharks by grabbing them like a wrestler and not allowing them to move, so they drown) So a heart attack would still be fatal, because either, they get less oxygen, or they just die. However, heart attacks are much less of a problem for smaller species, so they are ok :) Might be a problem for the kraken though

Summary: 1. They have interesting cardiovascular and nervous systems 2. They are intelligent (surprise, surprise) 3. Most octopus species only live between 1-2 years (has to do with their mating behavior/reproductive process) 4. Their ink is poisonus (they can suffocate if they don't escape their own ink) 5. They can mimic color, textures, and behavior

I love octopus..as a dish I have to admit. They sell octopus in a place in the Bay Area California. Great for barbecue. No bones. And the spaghetti dishes are so good. Three hearts. Amazing.

I was very lucky to have had a chance to spend about 20 minutes with a blue-ringed octopus in the wild once. That was one of the most magical encounters with wildlife of my entire life so far. They are truly amazing and mesmerizing creatures. extremely intelligent and curious too.

FYI: Blue-ringed octopus are incredibly beautiful AND dangerous! According to their wiki: - Despite its small size, it carries enough Tetrodotoxin-laden venom to kill 26 adult humans within minutes. - Tetrodotoxin causes severe and often total body paralysis. - Tetrodotoxin envenomation can result in victims being fully aware of their surroundings but unable to move. - Because of the paralysis, they have no way of signaling for help or indicating distress. - The victim remains conscious and alert. - Blue-ringed octopus are responsible for 11 to 16 fatalities.
