Nathan/Airchime P5: Old Cast vs New Cast

Upon recording an old cast P5 being tested by a museum railroad, I decided to compare it to another old cast P5 and a new cast. Featured locomotives include SP commute GP9 #3194, SP daylight E9A #6051, and AmCal cabcar #8306. Enjoy.

Interesting, more is revealed by that shot than I had previously thought. That shot also shows the switch points changing after the train passes.

I like both! The old cast definitely sounds the meanest with it being a little higher pitched, while the new cast squawks a bit more, love both!

I like the new casts, but personally the old casts are better because they play such a happy and musical sound. Definitely one of my favorite horns.

The P3's older cousin. They both even have the chirp as the pressure reaches the horn.

The P5 new casts, especially on metra, Are my personal favorite. While I do love the old cast, I find that the new one is really nice.

For me personally 6051's P5 takes the cake. I'd take an old cast over a new cast anyway as I like the A Major 7th chord as opposed to the notes used on the new cast which have either been raised or lowered a half step. 3194's horn isn't far behind 6051 but it seems a little bit "flat"

TFN5459 I think the difference in sound between 3194's and 6051's is that 6051's P5 was recorded with all bells forward, while 3194's was recorded with an R24 reversal. That may be responsible for the difference, but I'm not sure. I'm hoping the CSRM brings 6051 out again soon so I can get better recordings. As for the horns themselves, I like all of them. Can a new cast P5 quill like 6051? I now the tones are different, but mechanically is it possible to 3 stage feather/quill a new cast P5?

The horn on the 8306 sounds somewhat similar to the Metra F40s. The two others remind me of the Rio Grande for some reason.

Metra uses primarily new cast P5As, which are similar to 8306's straight P5. As for the old casts, I wouldn't be surprised if the DRGW had a couple

both sound good old cast and new cast ,the old cast with the gradual changing tones and new cast with a harmonious , blowing at the same time tone

I love seeing 6051 out and about; a beautiful unit that sounds as good as it looks. I can only wish 6051 made it out on the main once again. Oh well, Sac Southern will have to do. Hopefully the CSRM finds an excuse to run it again soon.

By the way, I agree, I would love to see 6051 again, by the way, I do like old cast more, sience to me the new cast sounds too much like a P3/K5LLA, it's weird if you ask me, I love old cast, because they have the right tone, also, I LOVE chirps on locomotive horns, they say something about the horn to me, it's wierd, but it is like that, I love 6051, my favorite locomotives of all time, behind that is ANY so tunnel motor

Hmmm I like the New cast P5 for their sounds on the Illinois Central but, I also like the Old cast because they where on most of the Southerns Locomotives

+Pilotguy251 Thanks! The old cast P5 was meant to be a low-maintenance alternative to the M5. It was designed to sound exactly like the M5, while requiring half the maintenance. The most notable difference is that the P5 has more of a trumpet sound. I have some other recordings of M5s. They're available on my channel if you would like to see them. Thanks for viewing!

The first M5s I heard were softer then the P5. With less of the chirp, and more of the horn, but less pitch. I love how it sounds.

Im gonna have to go with the old cast P5 for sure. My favorite horn ever is likely the Nathan P01235 and the old cast sounds similar along with the M5. I do love the new cast as well but the old cast imo you just cant beet.

I personally prefer the old cast especially 3194 rather than 6051, I don't know why, maybe the echo make it seems to be better sound, especially the recording of the 6051 aren't clear because of the background noises and the pneumatic bell it self.

The Old Cast is definitely better. But if you remove the #3 bell on the New cast it sounds quiet nice actually, and it was actually an offered horn from Nathan and mainly ended up on Alaska railroad locos.

I honestly love P5’s, it’s like one of my top favorite horns. Especially the old cast. The new cast however, is really good as well, gtw 5857 and ic 3138 OLS both have amazing P5’s. Both of which have ran on the new London sub behind my house. Nathan/Airchime changed the casting some time in the mid-70's. Old cast P-horns are marked "Pat Pending" while new casts are marked "Pat Pend."
