After two successful spells at Luton Town, Nathan Jones was appointed Southampton manager in November 2022. He arrived with the club in the Premier League relegation places. In a challenging season, cup ties provided as many wins as Southampton’s league fixtures. The highlight was a comprehensive EFL Cup victory over favourites Manchester City.
As all coaches know, the best laid plans rarely pan out exactly as desired. On a January night at St Mary’s Stadium, however, Jones’ carefully constructed tactical plans - which he reveals in our exclusive Masterclass - came to spectacular fruition. Such was their successful implementation, it was the only occasion City would be beaten by more than one goal in their treble-winning season.
By February, however, with Southampton still struggling to get results in the league, Jones was dismissed. The club’s third manager of the campaign also struggled to get league points, and relegation was confirmed with two games remaining.
But against City in the EFL Cup, Jones and his team gave a demonstration of what they were capable of. In this detailed Masterclass, Jones explains the thinking behind his selections, key principles that underpinned the performance, and the planned secondary shape he switched to, in response to a tactical tweak from Guardiola.

If I had to say one nice thing about Jones' time at Saints - it's that playing Ward-Prowse a bit further forward as a number 10 seemed to bring out the best of his attributes. Something that Selles immediately abandoned and moved him back into the pivot.

As a saints fan was a genuinely interesting watch… In theory tactically that’s good and it obviously was successful that day - I don’t get why we couldn’t get going in 99% of the other games he was in charge!

@@rubenhall1241 yeah I do agree, two unlikely goal scorers with great goals, but the tactical setup is sound, based on what he says in this video, and could have been successful, it just seems this was the only time it was… Whether that was the players or the coach or both, it didn’t work

This tactic is pretty basic and very general. Hes just stating where the space is and where he does want to end up, but doenst know (or didnt want to reveal) how to get there specifically. That can be a reason why it can work ones, but not everytime. The players would need more precise instructions and thats maybe the reason that the rest of the season was not successfull

Good to hear Nathan using the pronoun 'we' with ease; it wasnt the case most of the time. No disrespect - Haaland playing or not, its a fantastic coaching achievement to get a floundering side to do a job on the best team in the league (and as it turned out the continent). The tactical analysis didnt strike as me too earth-shattering tbh, and its slightly jarring to hear some of the buzzwords he used a lot when managing us ('front-footed', 'aggressive') that never felt too substantial. But really, it cant be denied what a result this was given how in despair we were as a team at this time. Most Saints fans were saying things like I just hope we dont get beat by a cricket score.

As a Luton fan due thanks need to be given to NJ for his contributions to our club. Regrettably however, the manner of his first departure to Stoke was shocking & he lost the respect of the club & fans, something he should have managed far better. Mick Hartford persuaded Gary to have him back again when Stoke binned him off and again, he helped us out before doing another career chasing runner to Southampton where things didn't work for him there also. A fortunate consequence of that was we then appointed the brilliant & much loved Manager that is Rob Edwards. All said, Nathan has some talent but his ego outstrips it. Thanks for your input but don't come knocking on our door a Third time if the slot would ever become available again, something no Luton fan would want. Rob Edwards is our boy. 👍 COYH.

My takeaway as a Saints fan is that it does immediately come across that he isn't quite the tactically clueless tool he came across during his time at Southampton but I get the feeling he is maybe not a top level communicator as evidenced by the bizarre press conferences and here, under no pressure, allowed to essentially tell his own story he repeats phrases an awful lot 'you'd be in a lot of trouble', 'one of our best players'

This match may have ‘showed that we belonged at that level’ but that following win against Everton was his only league victory - to go with seven defeats which demonstrated that we didn’t belong at that level at all. Hence our deserved relegation. It says something about him that he’s able to front a video like this from an apparent position of tactical mastery. One man’s self-delusion is another’s self-belief, I guess.

He's a good manager at a smaller lower league team (as per his success with Luton) but his time at Stoke and especially Southampton exposed his tactics and management. His interviews were so arrogant they became bizarre also.

I love that he’s talking about the Djenepo goal as some sort of tactical genius when in reality Lavia just split the defence by being as good as he is and Djenepo made what is usually a horrible decision for him as he couldn’t hit a donkey’s arse with a banjo and it paid off

The narcissism knows no bounds. Imagine having the last tenure he did and still having the ego to say, ‘yes, I’ll do a masterclass’. When he goes back through that Saints side you’re reminded how they should never have been relegated. A broke clock is right twice a day so sadly chancers like Nathan Jones will have to be tolerated a little longer. Absolute 🤡
