On the side of a volcano in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Nathan Paulin stepped out on a thin line. 403 meters later, he set the new highline world record. With 250m of air underneath his feet, it was no walk in the park. Check out his experience from above, beside, and on the line from his world record highline walk.
Update: Nathan recently set a new world record highline at the Natural Games in Millau, France - 469m!

max forsman Probably used a helicopter to get the main and backup lines across, then on each end they build equalized anchors, likely with each point being bolted a foot deep into the rocks on each side. After that, they make a pulley system to pull that line incredibly tight, which still feels loose in that long a line due to gravity. Then you just put some sort of sliding anchor to attach to the climber that drags behind him when he walks. It looks like a either a rappel ring with a carabiner through it or just a couple locking carabiners tied off to him with climbing rope.

+BadIdeas101 apparently 30m sag for 400m long, which is a significant slope. Guaranteeing a relatively low tension in the line, less than 1 ton. (line weight being around 80g/m, makes 32 Kg on the whole). Line has to be as little elastic as possible (1%?) , otherwise very long an tedious to tighten! (I'm now figuring out how to calculate tension of line (which I consider approximately the same all along the line) for any position of Nathan. Not only when he's in halfway)

Jeff helico It's normal Jeff, at the end the line is to incline to walk to the end, normaly for a record we have to finish at 2 meters from the anchors ;) It's a success no trouble ;)
