Oh dear. Ok, here's what most don't understand except a couple fellers who mentioned geology (on the right track, but possibly wrong material) and "end of the break" (doesn't explain what that means): Waves break when they suddenly pass over a deformation underwater thar causes the same volume of water to pass over less space. It could be a rock shelf, it could be a sandbar, it could be a ship, or, more as here, a reef. But these rises do not stretch the length of the beach. They exist in patches, and that's where the waves break. At the extremes of the obstacles there are what we call channels, where the seafood is lower. These people are in a channel. You can be sitting next to a reef where a 20 foot wave is breaking and be perfectly safe. Thank you. Goodnight.

. It's called a duck dive. The purpose being to dive down just enough to swim under the breaking wave which has an enormous amount of energy. If you don't get all the way under it you most likely will be drug to shore or at least further inland towards the beach. This scenario blows especially if it took you 20 or 30 mins of really hard work to paddle out to where the waves were. Worst case scenario there is a shallow reef that's 6ft(2 meters) directly under where that wave is breaking and you get slammed against it. From here it can only get worse. These outcomes are starting with minor scratches and a broken surfboard to broken bones and deep cuts. It is also not uncommon to see severe puncture wounds and enormous loss of blood as well. The last few worst case scenarios are hitting your head, losing consciousness and drowning or being sucked down into the reef in a small area or cave and drowning. The one I fear the most mainly because it's happened to me several times is losing your board and wave after wave keeps coming in and slamming you underwater for several minutes just to fight your way to the surface just in time to take a small breath and have it repeat over and over and over and over until you have no energy left. My friends finally found me and had to swim down about 10ft( 3 meters) just to grab my ponytail and drag me to the surface and threw me on the waverunner and brought me to shore. I bet 2 or 3 more waves and I wouldn't have been here today to type this message.

I love the feeling of a boat in the ocean. It's hard to explain but the ocean moves under you and picks you up at the same time as you slowly surge forward. I worked on a 90 ft steel hull tug boat that we repurposed and when we were in rough seas we would slam down in the trough and thee entire boat would shudder. Imagine that giant steel hull reverberating. At first I was a little concerned. After a while Inwould wedge myself under the table and bench seating and fall asleep between troughs. As the boat fell down into the trough I would go air borne and wake up as we slammed down then fall asleep climbing the next wave. Amazing what we can get use to. I miss the ocean, very glad I had that experience

That’s the famous break at Teahupoʻo (Tahiti), and they’re in the deep channel to the right of the wave - Perfectly safe. This wave is actually an oxbow shape and “breaks backwards” as a result of the ocean pulling back off a shallow shelf. To everyone unfamiliar with the surfing scene, these boats go out there all the time and know where to position themselves to have a perfect view and stay on shoulder of on coming waves. Teahupoo is my favorite wave in the world. This vid and title is straight up click bait hence why the women is so calm saying are we gonna make it 😂 and the surfer casually paddling there too.

@txsurfnturf Жыл бұрын
Teahupoo, on fire! 🔥 BTW, (for you non surfers) there is a pass in the reef (a channel) where the waves don't really break. Several boats drop anchor there and can watch the action in safety.

Are they actually anchored
@txsurfnturf Жыл бұрын
@@dutchess406 actually, no, I don't think so. Some may tie together, but really, they want to stay mobile; just in case. Lol. Although the waves don't generally break in the channel, there's always the potential of one washing through.

I think now the Polynesian locals at teahupoo don't allow it due to reef damage, the place is so commercial now it's lost its allure to me, still a hydrodynamic freak wave, it's an oil slick I've heard.
