The CDL Alley Dock is best accomplished by practice using "hand-eye" coordination.
Michigan allows the driver to stick their heads out the window.
The starting position is about 100 feet away from the target lane.
Start off by backing in the straight line and gently turning the wheel to the right, not much more than a quarter-turn or so. This will get the trailer to drift in the direction where you want to go.
Get back in front of the trailer if the drift starts to move too fast.
Work the trailer over into a 45 degree approach to the cones.
When you are seven to ten feet away from the first corner cone, turn the wheel to the right.
As the trailer enters the "alley," countersteer and get the power unit in front of the trailer.
Stop when the tailgate is within three feet of the back cones.
Then Get Out And Look (G.O.A.L.) to confirm the final position. ■
