If "death panels" are in the bill, would that be acceptable? Would the other parts of the bill make it passable as a product? If my neighbor asks me again about this I need sometrhing to tell him.

Amen. Nov 2006 my dad was diagnosed w/Bone Cancer he had Blue cross. His chemo treatment wasn't approved till Feb 2007. Once on treratment Blue Cross stopped his coverage for 2 weeks & my dad got a blood infection & it cost us thousands to hospitalize him. He finally got his coverage back. We paid 376 a month & once the year was over the insurance people said his coverage w/them would be denied & he would need to switch to HIPPO for like $500 a month but my dad died before that occured.

I am a senior citizen and enjoy the benefits of medicare and social security. I am happy with my health care provider and hope that changes in our health care will allow me to stay where I am. I think fear of the unknown is what is causing so much negativity from some of the people in townhall meetings. I think it would help if we could have major highlights of the plan and be able to respond to those plans via e-mail, phone, letters. This must be a thoughtful plan so it will not fail.

I don't live in America. In my country we have universal health care, and it is wonderful. I cannot imagine living in a place without it. It would be awful and scary. The current American system seems very selfish-- how can someone just not care about whether or not their neighbors have health insurance? It seems that lots of people care about what extending health insurance to others will cost them personally. I think everyone should care about the health and well-being of those around them.

arusky2001 What you are not hearing is what the standards are and what the focus areas are for theses rankings. The main areas are support for government health programs, government development of health policies, efforts related to determinants of health, such as food safety and nutrition. IN OTHER WORDS EACH COUNTRY IS RANK ON HOW MUCH THE GOVERNMENT PROVIDES FOR THE COUNTRY OR HOW SOCIALIZED MEDICAL CARE IS IN EACH COUNTRY.

I looked in google Finance, and the CEO makes 8.08 Million a year, now, I will repeat (Hmm I wonder why I repeat?) a quote from factcheck: "these numbers represent a very small fraction of total health care spending in the U.S. In 2007, national health care expenditures totaled $2.2 trillion. Health insurance profits of nearly $13 billion make up 0.6 percent of that. CEO compensation is a mere 0.005 percent of total spending."

Limited government" is a key term in the American philosophy. Its great significance is indicated by describing the purpose of limiting government's power in these words: Limited for Liberty. This summarizes what is meant by the statement in the Declaration of Independence about governments being limited in power "to secure these rights"--to make and keep them ever secure.

Rayhid, if you want increased competition, then allow for interstate insurance coverage. That does not cost the taxpayers anything and will help reduce premiums. Medicare premiums are expected to increase as well, the public option in no panacea but is a 1-way trip that cannot be undone.

It's interesting how we Americans have become so proud and highly myopic when it comes to our health care system. How many have lived in a country with true socialized medicine? I lived in a country with socialized medicine for 8 years and am sad to say that the US system is indeed broken. The care my family received outside the US was comparable to what were accustomed to while we lived in the US. The cost for the comparable care is more than 10x higher in the US. It's sad...

At the end of the day, you are generally right, there are too many credit cards! But I don't want to see them completely go away...for example businesses use them for short term expenses. Example: You gotta pay $10,000 bucks for goods now you will sell in a month, and you need to use credit now. Cash flow has timing problems.

As a final word: There is not a politician alive in this country that isn't influenced by a pharmaceutical company or an insurance company. By either receiving funding directly, or by partisan politics, every single one of them is pressured to lean one way or the other on this bill. It is the nature of the political system that the people of this country allowed to exist. It is time we took back the reigns and return control to it's rightful owners, the citizens of this country.

The best offense against lies is the truth....Sad thing is too many people dismiss the truth because they are comfortable believing the lies. There are those who live and thrive on fear. The rest of us just need to keep on repeating the truth and hopefully the truth will prevail. My heath insurance plan has risen in cost every year for the past 8 years (with current employer). If nothing is done, I believe that the trend will continue and I will keep on paying more and more. We need change.

The public option does not have to turn a profit. They get paid directly from the government, not from sales or services provided. American Medical Association limits doctors, medical schools and hospitals. State and federal mandates take 20-50% of your insurance payments. Decreasing current regulations will lower cost, and by passing legislation that offers incentives to companies that DON'T deny coverage to people with preexisting conditions, we will all get more coverage at a lower price.

It is very strage he dances around the "death panels" issue. On the July 22, 2009 tele-press conference, 5 times the call for health care reform featured the establishment of "an independent board of doctors and health care experts" to make the life-and-death decisions of what care to provide ....based on cost-effectiveness criteria.

I think the main problem faced here is that the most citizens of the country do not understand the contents and purpose of this health care reform bill. Because of certain parties, the people probably only focus on what is 10% of the bill rather than look at the bill as a whole. There should be a plan to educate the public on what this bill is all about. Campaign for it, like how college/ uni kids do when they spread their ideas. We need to EDUCATE the people, make them UNDERSTAND.

I'll parrot once again: The central problem with Health insurance in the US: 1) Employee driven healthcare subsidized with pre tax dollars and a partial or full employee "contribution. 2) This has led to a disconnect between consumer and health goods and have then inflated prices. There is too much insurance among the people who have it, and medical goods makers and doctors take advantage of it!

Lemme explain for like the 10th time. Employer driven health insurance is subsidized with pre-tax dollars and an employer contribution. This has led to overinsurance that the worker does not feel. So a $15 copay for a $400 dollar copay is due to the fact big pharma knows of the subsidy that the patient can't feel! True, a majority state insurance system will control, and in fact deflate these costs to where our medical innovation will go elsewhere.

For example Advair is not like 360 bucks because it costs that much! It is because the majority of people on insurance get it subsidized through their employer, and GlaxoSmithKline is taking advantage of the overinsurance due to the fact the consumer doesn't feel the cost! Kaiser copay for CA workers is 15 bucks!

Vaneephi, it's a bit of a stretch to say that the founders "knew would have to be eliminated." They codified the legitimacy of slaves in the Constitution (which, i'm sure you know, was written after the Declaration) stating that each slave would be counted as 3/5 of one person. Even Abraham Lincoln, who galvanized the abolition of slavery, was deeply conflicted: "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it."

It's stunning that so many republicans could have such vitriolic reactions to this very logical and well thought through argument for reform. Have conservatives turned their backs on their fellow man so thoroughly that they can step over the sick and fallen in the street and still sleep at night? Every citizen deserves to be treated with respect and this reform is the biggest step we can make toward that goal. I don't throw my family to the wolves; and if you're an American, you're family.

Another issue is overinsurance due to employee driven healthcare. It is subsidized with pre-tax dollars and a contribution by the job. Medical companies know this and inflate prices since consumers can't feel the costs of a $400 drug they paid with a $15 copay.....the $400 is due to the fact the consumer is overinsured and doesn't feel the cost.

I agree that full socialization is an idea that would never work in the US. It's not the best idea, IMHO, in any country. I also agree that providing total control to any one group is an even worse idea. My statement on socialized medicine was offered to let people know that life as we know it will not end if / when the current system is changed. There are other option out there that do work very well and provide people the care they need.

My view of government is what the country was founded on, a REPUBLIC. It means that people can have their own opinions, lifestyles, etc... within reason. It means that PEOPLE themselves make the difference, not some representative who claims to have similar opinions, yet is bought off. Obama is just the opposite of how I feel government should be. Government should be small and not have as much influence as it does.

LustyHeroine I agree with that. There are so many Americans unable to pay their health care debts because of greedy insurance companies. When it comes to health care, it should be "WE" instead of "ME". Too many insurance companies are stuffing their pockets of the American people's money instead of giving back to them. No one should have to go without health care insurance. If something is not done about the current health care system, future generations will suffer. That is not right.

True health care reform should start with (i) tort reform and/or no fault malpractice; (ii) Mandate the same treatment (tax and group pricing) for all individuals or corporations; (iii) Mandate no exclusions for pre-existing conditions; (iv) Allow interstate competition for health insurance; (v) test market pay-for-performance-outcome reimbursements; (vi) allow the purchase of drugs from outside the US that meet safety standards; and (vii) address the issues surrounding Medicare, the VA and IHS.

"We do not have the money to cover everyone." Yes, we do. We are already spending it on the private industry without the benefit of coverage or investment in the health care system. That is, it mostly makes a handful of people extremely rich while people. The money is there, it needs to be shifted to a social program (Medicare) rather than continuing to be wasted on making a few people very rich.
