Hitler spent over 800 days at the Wolf's Lair, his main headquarters. This bunker had a concrete roof over seven meters thick and a protective layer of gravel, making it nearly resistant to bombs and chemicals and lacked windows, requiring a complex ventilation system for oxygen. To conceal it, tons of soil and plants covered the roof, blending it into the forest.

Hitler was rarely seen in public in Germany after 1941, seldom used the Reich Chancellery( built at massive cost) and flitted between this grim place and his pleasanter mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden. Perhaps Hitler's paranoia meant he felt safe well away from Berlin, which was being bombed heavily after 1941.

Historians need to stop referring to Kehlsteinhaus as "The Eagle's Nest" - the Germans called i D-Haus or simply Kehlsteinhaus, and it's more professional to use its real name. Some people even refer to the Berghof as "The Eagle's Nest" which probably makes things even more confusing.
