80 hives in a luton van? hmmm something tells me in europe they don't have normal american amenities like air conditioning? I can imagine the heat dissipation from 80 hives. It would soon be 93 degrees inside. American vehicles all have air conditioning that I drive. I do have a pickup that I open the windows on, but that would be open in the back.

Sorry I don't consider 70+ hives a sideline. It's firstly a total material cost of 14k in total spend not including foundation and all the feeds and treatment costs or honey extraction equipment. Also the time each week to look after them even at 5 mins a hive it's 350mins or 6hours a week minimum. Sorry that's not a sideline that's a job on its own. Not to mension rearing treating extracting and all the rest.

Exactly the thought I had from beginning to the 22 minutes in (where I heard him spell out his business plan is mainly migratory beekeeping). Nice "sideline" indeed.

£6000 is amazing in 1970 but that's more like £75000 in today's money, accounting for inflation. That makes his projected £15000 less impressive. But i don't expect older people to understand the effects of inflation. They think you can still buy a house for £15000.

Here in the USA with a national loss rate of 45+% making a living on beekeeping is very difficult...especially since most areas here no longer are able to support colonies with proper nutrition.

If your loosing 45% every year, you need to get serious with varroa control.
