Join us to journey through a calendar year in poetry, read by actors on stage at the National Theatre. Allie Esiri and Damian Lewis were joined by friends including Simon Russell Beale, Fay Ripley, Danny Sapani and Lesley Sharp. Chris Riddell live drew the evening.
A Poet for Every Day of the Year is dedicated to Helen McCrory, who took part in some of these poetry evenings in previous years.
Signed copies of A Poet for Every Day of the Year are available from the National Theatre Bookshop. Every purchase supports the work of the National Theatre: shop.nationaltheatre.org.uk/p...
This event was performed on the Lyttelton stage, National Theatre, London on Tuesday 25 January 2022.

I couldn’t agree more with the rest of the comments on here, talking about how moving it is to see Helen read that last poem. She’s so missed and always will be. What an amazing, talented woman she was. It was sad to see Damian’s reaction after she finished reading the poem too. 🥹 My heart hurts for her family, as I can relate with my own family dealing with lots of grief this year too. It never gets easier. You just learn to live with it, but what a beautiful tribute Damian made to Helen!

Saw the little preview thumbnail of this in my "subscriptions" page and squinting I thought, whoa, what's this? Has the National got Hugh Laurie to do a cameo? Separated at birth, no doubt.

@@warlorddk2070 I don’t think you need to speak to Gerry that way. We can disagree about rhyme and poem structure without being condescending and belittling. We’re all here because we love poetry, so let’s choose our words more thoughtfully.

I for one have a lot of time for Damian Lewis, but in the name of the wee man, the butchering of Burns in the Scots ::language:: (no great surprise to hear it downgraded to a dialect by someone speaking with “the sun never sets on the British empire” authoritative RP)… I’m at a loss as to if it was better, worse or indistinguishable from Gene Kelly in Brigadoon. Cod at best, genuinely painful and excruciating to witness.
