In this video... Navajo Historian, Wally Brown shares about how our Navajo people use sage.
There are many different varieties of sage. In this video we cover the sage that grows around Dinétah.
Basically there are two different types. What is called "Old Man Sage" and "Sagebrush" The sagebrush is what is more commonly used among our people.

There is nothing in the world that smells like the magical smell of the desert during and after a light rain. The sage opens up and fills the air. It’s a smell that never gets old.

That sounds wonderful. I have never experienced that. Sage is one of my favorite smells. I like to put some in a pot to simmer on the woodstove. Sage tea is amazing for a sore throat or headache.

Yeah. That smell mixed with the smell of the red rocks and sand, it's intoxicating and soothing, bring you right down to Earth and then transports you up, it's magical.

Yes I'm young, Navajo thank you for blessings on the sage needed that learn a lot from you teaching myself from yourself Mister your a grand honors to my learning of sage also from my own self as a learner from sage and what I've delt with. I use sage essential oil in a diffuser. When I was a truck driver, I was the first vehicle stopped by a flagman for road contruction in AZ. He came over by my cab and talked to me, and ended up pointing out all the desert plants that were nearby.

A few decades ago I was invited to come to S. Dakota for a ceremony on Lakota territory. The sage they gathered there grew in a single stalk, about 12 inches high and straight up. It was used in sweat lodge ceremonies. When you felt your skin burning, you'd rub it on your skin and it would feel like ice!! Beautiful plant. Thank you for your words.

I love the smell of burning sage, particularly the "mugwort" or black sage... they say do a tea, but the odor of the smoke makes my senses truly fly beyond the normal existence. Something special indeed derives from special herbs and spices.

There should be mention that caution should be used with mugwort, Artemisia vulgaris when prepared in a tea for women who are pregnant. Artemisia vulgaris is a blood mover and should not be used in tea form during pregnancy. 🌿

Black sage is Salvia mellifera. Mugwort isn't even in the same family of plants. Mugwort is an Artemisia. Mugwort SHOULD NEVER BE CONSUMED BY PREGNANT WOMEN UNLESS THEY DON'T WANT TO BE PREGNANT ANYMORE! Mugwort causes the woman's uterus to contract and stimulates the body to start menstruation. Sage also is not recommended for people who are pregnant.

@@sharonflowers2733 Mugwort ( the one I referenced) is likely unsafe when taken by mouth (tea, or in capsule) during pregnancy. Mugwort might cause the uterus to contract or stimulate a period, which can lead to a miscarriage. And actually, it was used for the termination of pregnancy when there were no options for women facing life or death if they were unable to carry the baby full term. I dare say it would be cautionary for those who are pregnant unless specifically working with a qualified herbalist, medicine man/woman, native or one who specializes in TCM. 🌿 I'm unfamiliar with the species you are referencing.

If you’re a white man, and you’re buying “sage”, you’re probably burning the plant that’s in the thumbnail of this video that comes from Europe (white-man territory) and NOT the sage that grows in the desert. If the leaves you burn are long as skinny, you are burning white-man’s sage, and you can absolutely continue to burn your sage like your ancestors did.

*I grow 4 types of Sages here on MAUI for the past 7 years, the aroma smells great, the tea is smooth and for cooking, I chop this and parsley and meld it in lots of melted butter, garlic, ginger and turmeric which I add to my steak, chicken, pork or seafood!!!*

I love hearing about the usage of the flora in your surroundings. Here in Switzerland many people don't know the abundance and various uses for plants around them because this wisdom was not passed down to them or they probably think it is not necessary knowledge today. But I find it gives me perspective to know I'm surrounded by such diverse, rich and useful nature. I think it's important to know and appreciate the plants and animals around us and to teach the next generation like you do.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I'm Dineh but was born & raised off the Rez. These teachings were never taught to me or my brothers & sisters. When I visit my relatives on the Rez, and ask them various questions, most of the time they cannot provide an answer, or give really vague answers or just say that's how it's always been done, they don't really know either. So thank you again for sharing your knowledge, I appreciate your time and effort to keep tradition alive.

I'm from Tucson and had to move to North Carolina, although it's beautiful and we need rain to make living things (very green here) unless you've lived in the desert, one cannot understand the magic of desert rain! My heart physically hurts missing home. Not to mention AZ is the only state that doesn't do daylight savings madness , now that I have had to experience that , it's terrible to change the time (which they may try to over ride The Most High's creation but they are always fraudulently) its very bad on the body, mind and spirit. I know each place is God given , made and blessed but Arizona is very special, that's why ancient pyramids are in the grand canyon ❤ 🏜

I know certain places do not allow any white men around, but am grateful for those who share with all of us. I have always believed we need to go back to the native ways and be one with nature, not as we are now. I've grown up using sage for clearing and protection, never knew you could make tea with it. I love learning about traditional herbal medicines. I hate pharmaceutical companies and prefer natural treatments when i can. More please! With supply chain issues and corrupt medicine this week become important I think. At least for people like me who have lost any faith in our modern healthcare system. Get a good BOOK. Plant a garden with lots of different herbs & flowers, but make SURE you buy HEIRLOOM/NON-GMO seeds because they're making lots of stuff without seeds: lemons, grapes, tomatoes will be next, so we can't feed ourselves 😡Good Luck~🙏🌱🌻🌺🌾🌿💚✌

There are different variations of it. I don't use use the same sage in my bird stuffing to smudge my home. It's 2 different sages. There is cooking sage & smudging sages. A mystical person can also be called a Sage. I hang it on the walls of my home to keep the bugs out. I love the smell of it. My sister*in*law hates the smell of it. It makes me feel sound after sageing 🙏❤🌿

I am a Tatar and traditionally we used to use a lot of herbs in our daily lives. The knowledge was passed generation to generation. But with the time, we ve lodt that knowledge. My grandmother taught me the herbs. Just wanted to express my gratitude for sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world.

I was at the checkout at Walmart and they had some Pure Leaf teas in bottles and I picked up a Blackberry and Sage. Best tea I've ever had. It was amazing. Sage is a chelator of metals. Binds it up to be excreted or sweated out. Works great on helping eliminate Uranium. Navajo wells were contaminated by the Uranium mining.

When my wife and I worked in the Grand Canyon, we came to admire the Navajo and Hopi traditions greatly. To this day, my wife gives our home a cleansing with sage every year.

the sage i know from 8000' central colorado east slope is different from the two shown here it is much smaller, a forb, not a woody plant i gather in the spring/summer, only the ones without flowers it is a good sage, and now i learned some additional uses many thanks

I believe you're describing real sage (another sacred plant), Wally is holding sagebrush, in this area that is sage in common usage.

love the Navajo language, I used to listen to the Phoenix Sun's games on a station in Window Rock, I couldn't understand a word but I remember when KJ, Charles Barkley, A.C.Green, Dan Marley or Danny Ainge made a great play, they'd get all excited and then I would automatically get excited like I knew what they were totally saying! Wally I'm sick. I had an annual visit with my doctor at Duke Endocrinology. I must have an IP fusion soon, that's not all. They discovered some nodes in my lungs 🫁 I have to more test to see if they are growing. Thank you for teaching me the ways of our Ancestors. I'm going to fight as long as I can. I do not get along with Dad. I have tried? My mother recently died of ALS and now it looks like I'm next I wish I could tell my farther what I learned at my Dr visit. So, I tell you instead Correction IV Fusion for Osteoporosis that I suffer from.

I love sage, palo santo and frankincense. Wonderful to use these cleansing plants / resins in the home rather than chemical fragrence that brings the vibration down. I sage my house every week, set positive intentions and send unconditional love to my family and for all who come into my home. ❤

I have twisted sagebrush bark into cordage as well as used it for tinder for Firestarter. The wood is also good for hearthboards and spindles in bowdrill fire making

I ❤ Sage. It grows well in south western Arizona. We have a female sage I've been nurturing for a decade or so. I grow it for saging and cooking. Thank you for my further education, I will be drinking and using sage water from now on. ❤

Thank you for sharing. Many years ago my wife and I came across a dead whale on the Olympic Peninsula. Hours later the stench remained in our car. My wife admitted that she had kicked the whale because she wanted to find out what it felt like. Fortunately we were heading East so I was able to pick some sage to put in our car. It really helped a lot.

Thank you for this information. Plant medicine is the best I believe. I still get purple sage (old man) as you call it sent to me from NM. It is wonderful for stomach issues and for stress. I am mixed Navajo, I was unfortunate not to grow in the reservation, my father used to teach me from what he grew up on the reservation, after he passed at my teenage yrs, I find myself trying to real accurate information of my native background thank you for your videos ❤❤❤

Thank you for teaching us. I'm Russian. When I visited R. church with my blind older relative being 10y.o. at the time I've fainted because of the strong smell of burnt sage there.I remember that because I felt that I've betrayed my older blind companion and I was very sad and apologetic to her.🌺

Good Evening sage I used in cooking but the sage odor is nice I can see in sweat lodge’s I have grown in in the past not sure if male or female I love that your extent of your use of your uses our creator God didn’t miss a beat ❤thank you for your teachings knowledge I appreciate it ❤
