The North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO blows out 75 candles on 4 April 2024. While turning 75 may signify retirement for some, NATO proves to be more vital and relevant than ever, especially following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2024.
Flockhart is Chair in Security Studies at the Florence School of Transnational Governance. Ahead of NATO’s 75th birthday on 4 April 2024, she wrote an article in International Affairs taking stock of the organisation’s role in a multi-order world.

Not to me. If you have a contract with other parties and they don’t fulfill their obligations, it is a material breach of the contract. The U.S. has a right to leave as far as I am concerned. We have to concern ourselves with China. Let the Europeans concern themselves with their continent.

As an American I think it’s time for the USA to work toward a lesser role within NATO. Europe has the means, the technology, and the population to take the lead in their own defense. Too long have the vast majority of NATO’s European members arrogantly failed to meet their obligations (spending and military readiness…they are two different things). A growing number of Americans are considering walking away from the Alliance. It’s not just MAGA republicans.
