Nuclear weapons have helped keep the peace between India and Pakistan for many decades after they fought three conventional wars. Perhaps Russia and NATO can learn from this and avoid war at all costs and spend the money on the needs of the people.

Until last year, as a coder, and one that love math, I evaluated this in terms of game theory. However there is a problem now. Game Theory relies on the assumption that ALL PARTIES are rational actors and will not randomly carry out actions with no utility to themselves, or that damage their utility or that favor the other side unless they stand to gain from it. Thats RATIONAL. However if you find yourself in a standoff with an irrational actor, lets say a wild animal that has some sort of brain damage... well you cannot predict what it might do.... So Russia in their infinite wisdom decided they would tell 8 other nuclear powers that they are now thinking of changing their nuclear policy from NO FIRST USE... To PERHAPS FIRST USE.... WE'LL SEE. Worse they told everyone, and secondly seem utterly oblivious to the international consequences. They gain ZERO utility from this move and now FORCE opponents and allies alike to target them first! Right now you can be sure on hearing this China are rearming plenty of their ICBMS at Russia and moving bombers closer to Russia, Israel will retarget for Russia, France the US and Britain will also be reevaluating their position with a new emphasis on "Well if they are going to change their policy to first strike we need to strike first... cos they just told us we need to strike first" Even India and Pakistan might start retargeting any missiles that can reach Russia. Worse they just told every nation on Earth that they might be destroyed on Putins say so any minute now... So ALL OF THOSE will now want nuclear weapons. Thats every single nation in the EU and absolutely every nation within 500 miles of the Russian border. Russia just told the world they are irrational actors and will fire nukes if they are not destroyed first. Thats not a smart move, a logical move or a rational move.
