Russia can’t even take on Ukraine by itself. The U.S alone could wipe Russia off the face of this planet in 2 hours give or take. It’s really an interesting notion. While more rounds of ammunition have been used in battle by American forces over the last 20 years, none of it has been used in fighting a real army, except a few weeks of mostly aerial attacks on Iraq in ‘03. Really the Ukrainians are the only people who have experience in fighting the Russians, especially on Russia’s preferred terms (i.e., massive ground operations: tank, artillery and infantry). When you look at the development of Russia’s supposedly high tech arms, it’s basically one failure after another (Not only can they not seem to actually build many Su-57 fifth gen stealth aircraft, but they’re really not even that stealthy - India gave up on the whole project; and their rail guns etc have proven mostly unworkable in the field; their tech advanced additions to the Black Sea fleet proved susceptible to basic coordinated intel/infil attacks, and are now half sunk). So NATO can handle the Russians in the air and sea. But the Ukrainians (and to a lesser extent the Chechens, etc) know how to actually fight Russians the way a war with Russia would go down for NATO. So they will most definitely become ‘instructors’ (either literally or by NATO wargaming and tactical training developed from the massive accumulation of battlefield data provided to the US and Britain by the Ukrainians in order to help them coordinate their movements against Russian positions). If they do end up training NATO literally, they could do so most effectively through joint programs - exercises and training - which would bring Ukraine even closer to de facto NATO membership than this war has. Indeed, perhaps Ukraine’s caveat in helping train NATO to fight Russians on the ground will be in inclusion under the Article 5 umbrella.
