This book's title is ''wagahai wa neko dearu'' in Japanese. ''wagahai'' is a very bossy word meaning ''I'', and ''dearu'' is a hard phrase which gentlemen may use, but such words are used by a cat! From the first line, Soseki depicts the cat as a humorous character with the gap between its position and phrasing.

Thank you so much for pointing this out, my friend! 😃 It's amazing how much this cat is saying, through his choice of words, from the very start. Have a fantastic day!

So glad to hear you enjoyed it, my friend! 😃 This novel was a pleasant surprise for me too. I love cats, so that had a lot to do with my decision to read it. Thank you so much for stopping by!

What a nice coincidence: I’m reading this next month on a friend’s recent recommendation, prior to which I had no familiarity with this author. This after just finishing The Birds, which I loved. (Thumbs up to that copy of Kieslowski’s Dekalog in the background.)

Wow, this is synchronicity! So happy to hear you enjoyed The Birds. Vesaas deserves so much more attention. This Soseki novel was a pleasant surprise for me. I'm planning to make a video on Sanshiro someday, but I may prioritize other Japanese authors. I'm such a big fan of Japanese literature, and I realized there was nothing about it in my channel... Kieslowski is one of my favorite filmmakers. When people ask me about my favorite film, I say Dekalog, which is cheating in a sense, but people usually don't mind. Thanks again for watching and commenting, my friend, and enjoy I Am a Cat!

I picked up the manga version. "Oh cute, a book in a cats point of view". I definitely did not expect it to be so philosophical. I liked it, but I dont think Ill be reading it again.

Thank you for watching and sharing your experience, Natalia! 😃 I know what you mean; the novel is not what one may expect from the title. I still haven't had the chance to read the manga, but I will one of these days. Have a fantastic day, my friend!

I'm a big fan of Soseki, and I highly recommend him! In a way, I'm glad I had experienced other books by him before I read this one. My favorite so far has been Sanshiro. Kokoro and Kusamakura are great too. Let me know what you think about Soseki if you do decide to read him!

Thank you so much, Cucki! I hope you enjoy the book. :) I absolutely love cats, so I plan to review more books that feature them. In my latest video (12 Brilliant Novellas Written by Women) I talk briefly about Colette's The Cat, which is also very good. Thanks again, and have a great day!

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I'll add them to my list. I also want to read The Cat Who Saved Books, by Sôsuke Natsukawa, which is really popular right now. :)

Hi, I’m 13 years old and I find this book pretty interesting. Do you think a teen (or me) should be able to read this/ or should read this in general?
@JorgesCorner
@JorgesCorner 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! If you prefer novels that have more of a plot or structure to them, you could try Soseki's Sanshiro (1908) or Kokoro (1914). I loved these two, and I understand why so many readers favor them, but I Am a Cat is one of those novels that immerse you in a different world. If you want to try a more poetic Soseki, then Kusamakura, aka The Three-Cornered World (1906) is the book to read. Botchan (1906), finally, is Soseki's most popular and most accessible novel. Hope this quick guide helps you decide! :)

Hi! I’m currently 17 and wish to indulge in literature. Would you say this is a good book for a beginner who has little knowledge on Japan/Japanese history? Or books in general?
@JorgesCorner
@JorgesCorner Жыл бұрын
Definitely! 😃 I will say, however, that plot is not one of its strengths, as it is more about the narrator's thoughts and impressions. If you prefer something more plot-driven by the same author, I recommend his novel Sanshiro. I also recommend the works of Yasunari Kawabata, my favorite Japanese author. I wish you the best in your reading journey!

@@JorgesCornerPlot is almost never emphasized in literature. It’s never really about the plot. The plot just gives a spatial and temporal environment where the real work of literature is accomplished. Plot is the main central feature of genre fiction where the story is dominated by action. The story has to keep being pushed forward with little time for reflection to maintain as much of the audience’s attention as possible. It’s more about making money by appealing to the lowest common denominator and by not challenging the audience’s position. Hence why literature is different from genre fiction.

I hope more works by Soseki become available in Arabic translation! I recommend trying his other works in English. When I began to read in English, I didn't understand everything, but the experience was still great, and something similar happens to me now with French. I recommend Soseki's novels Sanshiro, Kokoro, and Kusamakura. Have a wonderful day, my friend! 😃
