What is the Direct Approach, also called the Direct Method or Natural Approach? Watch this video, and find out.
In this video, Teacher Lela talks about “The Direct Approach to Language Learning” that ALO7 has adopted, which includes speaking only English to the students (complete immersion into the language), and focusing more on speaking and conversation than on spelling and grammar. Teacher Lela also goes over three methods used in The Direct Approach, giving examples of each method. Free lessons!

This is interesting stuff! I work as a teacher of Swedish for immigrants (SFI) and often use activities described here. For example, I let students come forward and act out a Swedish everyday situation, like waiting in line, or returning a purchase to the shop, meeting a neighbour in the shared laundry room... like a role play. I've read about suggestopedia which has a similar approach. But this describe pretty well what I do and it really does the trick.

My English teacher in primary school used the direct method, it was a time when teachers in Norway still had a lot of freedom in how to teach. For me it helped immensely. I didn't realize how much it helped until I started learning German in fifth grade, with the "traditional" method (memorizing lists of dictionary words and grammar mnemonics etc.)

If you only focus on a method you are heading for failure. Traditional methodologies have been proved to be a waste of time in terms of getting real skills to use a language for what a language is mainly meant to. That is, to speak in fluently in real contexts of interaction. So we must aim to use different methods,: direct, teaching grammar but in a metacognitive and conversational way,. We must put into practice the knowledge coming from Neuroscience in the field of the acquisition of a foreign language. We have to implement a holistic and conversational approach that lets us a balanced combination between contextual learning and adquisition. Despite a pure acquisition is not available when it comes to the process of learning of a foreign language, there are some interest aspects involved in it that can be used in an efficient way.

Where is the difference to the audiolingual methods?
@lelaschavers4943
@lelaschavers4943 5 жыл бұрын
While the two methods are similar in that neither uses the native language, the Audio-lingual method is based on behaviorist theory and focuses more on grammar by repetition instead of learning target vocabulary using visuals and TPR.
