For the owner-builder, or natural building enthusiast, this video covers the general principles of a masonry, or European heat storage stove and takes you through the creation of a low cost stove for a straw-bale hybrid home. Enjoy!

Great job. Many of the comments here at this video, are absurd. I'm sure this stove, in an emergency, could get you through the winter by itself. For people who only have a wood stove and can't get into a project like this that requires lots of work, even "piling up" bricks around the wood stove or on the sides will provide "thermal mass heat" to some degree for 3 or 4 hours after the fire goes out.

Masonry heaters are pretty cool but the modern wood stoves also have very high efficiencies in the 70-80’s and can stay warm and burn over 12 hours as well.

Hi Carolyn, Very interesting design. I enjoyed the video. How has it stood up over the last few years? Has anything cracked from the high heat? Those pipes often crack, from what I have heard.

how much did it weigh? Did you you need to brace the floor for the additional weight by putting beams in the crawl space?

Ok but how do you clean creosote inside that maze?
@Mara5
@Mara5 3 жыл бұрын
There will be no creosote because of clean burning.When you have metallic wood stove you have to burn with minimum oxygen when you want to keep house warm all night. When you heat up the masonry heater in the evening with almost maximum oxygen your house is warm in the morning.

Adobe bricks wiiiith, what kinda mortar? It looks like sand and some kind of pitch... am I right? I know the ancients sometimes used tar & pitch with soil, as a mortar.

Do you know if this would pass inspection/code? I want to build one myself with maybe an masonry assistant to help. I have been looking for one that has experience in this but so far I have talked to 3 masons and none know what the heck I am talking about. Also, I read an article that says that a normal wood stove can not handle the high heat and that the glass could melt. Not sure if that is true or just a sales ploy. Can you enlighten me on this and maybe find a local mason. I am in Portland, OR Thanks! Monica

Hi Monica, Our stove would probably not pass inspection as is, even though it was designed and executed by a German engineer. There are some we have seen in homes which certainly have passed code (check with your local officials perhaps?). They are a bit rare here in the states (probably due to the expense), not many masons would know of them, for certain. A friend of mine (who is from Portland, actually) worked with a mason in Taos, NM who is known for installing them. The "high heat will melt the glass" is indeed not true as you suspect (ours would have shattered long ago). I lived in Portland for some years, love and miss the area. Feel free to contact us on our -mmuch more often checked email address: earthentouchbuilders@yahoo and we can try and help you along if we can. Glad you like the stove, we've just stoked it yesterday for the first time for a few hours in the morning and it was still radiating warmth around 8 p.m. Great stoves indeed! cheers - Carolyn

+Monica Vinton / Wow! What are the odds! I am from Portland Oregon too! I am a mason, but I am currently building a home in Brazil. I will return to SE Portland, Feb 2016, and I'll be going into business for myself, building ovens, fireplaces and dog houses out of things like bricks and cob. I've built two ovens before. Cheers!

+Levi Clays hey Levi! Glad to hear from you! Maybe you could help me with this project and have a use it as a model for your work? Help us both out since I don't have a lot to spend on the project. Email me at monkeyl@hotmail.com Monica

Monica Vinton That sounds great! I will save your email. Come February 2016, I'll try to get a hold of you, and we can discuss the details. If you happen to start building one before that time, there are indeed plenty of videos like this one, here on KZfaq, so either way, good luck and God bless! ;)

+Levi Clays The plans for the house I am building are almost done. There is a concrete slab being added where the stove will go. I am hoping to start the house about the time you get back so the timing would work great. I would expect to pay you something. I already picked up the firebrick I need.
