I almost always mordant my yarn before I dye with plants, flowers or mushrooms. Mordanting your yarn before dyeing helps the dye stick to your fiber, improving color and light-fastness.
Learning how to mordant your wool fiber is a basic skill every natural dyer should learn. In this video I show you my go-to method for using alum as a mordant.

I have been using commercial dyes for decades. I wanted to start using natural plant dyes but mordanting has been a mystery to me. You simplified it! Thank you for this video.

Aloe vera makes a wonderful mordant for natural dyes. I could list a few papers with all of the details if you'd be interested.

@@erikakim7425 Sure! The main paper I've worked from is called: A Study on the Effect of Marigold Flower Dye with Natural Mordant on Selected Fibers, by Nilani, et al., JSS College of Pharmacy, Tamilnadu. See especially Materials and Methods: b). Selection of mordants - Natural mordant, dried juice of Aloe vera, and f). Extraction of Aloe vera juice - Fresh leaves of Aloe vera were collected and washed thoroughly. The outer green surface was peeled off and the linear white mass was collected. 150 gm of the selected material was crushed to a semi-solid consistency, which was subjected to filtration. 50 gm of the filtrate was subjected to evaporation to 1/10th of its volume under controlled temperature. Which references this paper: Balsam, M., Aryayev, N.L., Extract of Aloe: Scientific and clinical data, in Aloe Vera: New Scientific Discoveries, by Max B. Skousen, 1976; 84-93. Another paper called: Extraction and Optimization of Natural Dye from Hambo Hambo (Cassia singueana) Plant Used For Coloration of Tanned Leather Materials, by Berhanu and Ratnapandian, in Advances in Materials Science, vol. 2017; tested Aloe vera as a mordant for natural dyes extensively and had the best results with using it as a pre-mordant. All of these papers are available from a Google search. Glad I could help!

@@MyraMadeColor You're very welcome! I'm still trying to figure it out myself, as my experience with natural dyes has just begun. I was interested in finding a natural mordant and stumbled across it. Apparently another good natural mordant is Mango bark juice, which is covered in the last paper I listed. Really looking forward to watching more of your videos!

Hi! I'm excited to have found your channel while looking for something to do with my carrot tops as I'd read somewhere they can be used to create a natural dye. I am very interested in creating and using natural dyes and ecoprinting is fascinating and I have a lot to learn still. I have a large garden as a source of botanical materials. I see this process for mordanting in the video is based on working with animal fiber. Do you have one for working with plant fibers?

Thank you for this video! Im new to working with wool. I'd like to know if you want to make a dye stock to save for later, if you only have a very small amount of wool to dye, do you add the alum and cream of tartar to the water at the same time as the dye and then just save what you don't use in a jar?
@MyraMadeColor
@MyraMadeColor Жыл бұрын
You can make a dye stock to use later, but make sure it's sealed tightly. That will help prevent mold from forming. You can add the mordant to the dye (I've done this before) but I believe it's ideal to mordant separately before you dye. The goal is to evenly coat the fiber with mordant before you dye it.

I don't have a big enough pot to do two skeins at once. When one is done and out, can I then just add the second skein to the water, or should I make a completely new batch of mordent water?
@MyraMadeColor
@MyraMadeColor Жыл бұрын
Great question! You wouldn't need a fresh pot of water and mordant. You could add additional mordant to the same bath for the 2nd skein. There's some thought that all the mordant isn't absorbed by the fiber. You could either drop the % you use for the 2nd skein, or use the same amount. But I wouldn't go above 20% for WOF. Otherwise your fiber may feel a bit sticky. Good luck!

After mordanting do I need to wait for the yarn to dry to begin dyeing it? Could the yarn go straight from the pot of mordant to a pot of dye?
@MyraMadeColor

You do not need to wait. Mordanted yarn can go straight into the dye pot.

I have solid alum pieces with me. Do i need to powder it before using it to mordant? If so, is there any specific way to powder it, like should I heat it or something?
@MyraMadeColor
@MyraMadeColor 6 ай бұрын
I've only used powered alum. It needs to dissolve in the hot water, so if the pieces are able to dissolve, my guess is that's it's fine. But that's only a guess.

Would using the alum mordant on a already dyed wool yarn with logwood, help stop the bleeding ? If so, do you have to heat the water or just let the dyed yarn soak in the water mixed with alum ?
@MyraMadeColor
@MyraMadeColor 10 ай бұрын
I haven't dyed with logwood, yet. Did you mordant the yarn before you dyed? You could try soaking the yarn in warm water with alum to see if it helps. The alum will not dissolve in cold water.

Yes. Some dyers may keep their mordanting pots separate from their dyeing pots. I don’t, and haven’t noticed an issue. But I do make sure I wash my pots throughly after each mordant or dye bath. Good luck!
