Discover how to transform fabric, handmade felt and up-cycled clothing using foraged vegetation without having to use powdered chemicals to fix the colour!
As an experienced eco printer working in the 'dirty pot', my usual process involves wrapping fabric with leaves, bark or onion skins to achieve direct contact prints. Did you know however, it's possible to dye fabric solid colours in a reactive pot and this is a wonderful way to revamp clothing, have fun and save the pennies?
Join me for this live-stream where I will introduce you to this process and share plenty of PRO tips. I hope to inspire you to give it a try!

Re-watching from New Mexico, USA. This is wonderful, thankyou! Such a great instruction and tutorial! Also, a wonderbag or old fashioned pot warmer: wool blanket in box, might work to keep microwaved pot warm...? 🌿🍂

Thank you for the fun class today. I have done more "Steam" method dying than emersion but both are fun. I have also used Soy milk to soak cotton before emersion dying. I would be interested to click in to your club but tomorrow will not work for me as it is my Daughter's birthday and we have a full day planned to celebrate. California, USA

I have been trying to experiment with copper liqueur to dye nettle to get better greens, But feel insecure about it's toxicity Probably finding a copper pot would help a lot To feel more confident I think the powders and liqueur are interesting, but also confusing. Have you ever dyed with red hazel or copper beech (the tree that has burgundy leaves)? I once achieved an amazing blue shade from the leaves! But cannot reproduce it That's why I wonder if copper could support in producing greener tones

Great video Nicola! I was going to try to catch it live but missed the time slot, so thank you for making the video available! Now a question: Using eucalyptus, fresh picked, will doing the first stage boiling in an aluminium pot, cooling overnight etc then transferring the liquid to a stainless steel pot to add the wool work the same? Or does it all need to be reheated in the aluminium pot please?
@clasheen
@clasheen 6 ай бұрын
You are so welcome Kathy, I"m glad that you enjoyed the recording! Personally, if you have an aluminium pot to create your dye bath, I recommend that you use it for the dyeing too. It's far easier and when working without powdered mordants, the reactive pot will help in a small way to make the colour more light and wash fast. This doesn't mean that you can't transfer the liquid to a SS pot, just that I wouldn't!

Great video Nicola! I have been using the dirty pot and printing. Would I be able to print in the dirty pot and once completed, dye the printed fabric. I’m in the USA and some of my leaves give beautiful dark purple or dark brown. They’re usually dark enough that I wonder if I could also dye it. I have a white felted vessel I made using your video tutorial. I want to eco-print and also dye. Thank you

Hi Tonya, this isn't really a question that I can go into in any depth here, more something to ask for my club members. However, I will say that it's always possible to dye first then print OR print first and then dye. I would say that you will get better results by dyeing first because then you can choose vegetation to compliment or stand out against the background colour. The risk is though that you may obliterate all the prints if your dye liquid is too strong so keep checking regularly to make sure you are happy with the colours. Good luck!
