Whether I'm soft curly or dead straight, I still experience racism, so as I grew older, I did a big chop, and I just don't care what anyone feels, this is how God made me.

Our hair is the most diverse hair than any other group. I love my people and seeing my sisters embrace their natural hair is amazing to see. Our hair reaches towards God and it grows beautifully, I am not ashamed of being black nor my hair people can imitate me but they can't out do the doer.

This documentary brought tears to my eyes. It' is so well done. This should be nominated for an Oscar and should win. There have been other documentaries done about black hair but this one covers it all and lifts us up. I'm light skinned and even though I grew up with so called good hair I used to texturize my wavy hair to make it straighter. I stopped doing that 20 years ago and have been natural and loving it. I don't do weaves. I used to color my hair bleached it blonde until I lost a patch. Stopped doing that. I do color my grey but I use all natural henna. No chemicals at all. Its not healthy. Its nice to come full circle and embrace what was given me. Bravo to all who contributed to this wonderfull documentary.

I'm even more proud of my parted afro after watching this film. I've been rocking it for 5 years and cutting off that relaxer is the most self-loving thing I've ever done.

I loved this documentary and will send it to my grandchildren. It's sad the Black women of today are dealing with the same problem as we did in the 50s and 60s.

I don't know why I'm just now seeing this, but I'm glad it popped up! What a great documentary! I've been wearing my natural hair since before what we are now calling the "natural movement" and way before the "Good Hair" movie came out and I have to say I was laughed at by my "own people" when I started rocking my fro back in 2002! I was relaxed but I got divorced and just decided that I didn't want to relax my hair anymore, so I didn't! But I saw the change coming when other black women started asking me a few years later, "How did I get my hair to do that?"! So, I just shared with them what I was doing and watch the metamorphosis over the years to come! ;-) Oh, and BTW as a "black female computer programmer" in corporate America, I got the looks, and the questions about touching my hair, and I'm sure there were discussions (behind my back) about me wearing my hair in an afro, but fortunately for me at the time, the company I worked for didn't have a specific dress code and I was always dressed professionally, so I think that's why they just let me be. But I'm a "baby boomer" and I have to admit that I have reverted back (just a little bit) by at least putting my hair up into a bun for an interview when I changed jobs, but once I got the job, I rocked my fro! LOL

I love this. Remembering when I first went natural, how black women criticized me. Now, look at how we're embracing our blackness and hair texture. ❤

I really loved watching this.

I've had locs (on and off) for over 30 years now, but before deciding to get the initial set, I kept my hair relaxed. It wasn't to assimilate, nor was it about shame of my natural texture. It was merely about what I liked to see on myself at that particular time. I liked big hairstyles, so relaxers allowed me to achieve that look. Overtime, I fell in love with the majestic look of locs, so I did the big chop and started locking. Long story short, if a woman decides that she wants to wear her hair relaxed, I'd say get out of her business and don't automatically assume that it's some deep or political reason as to why she chooses to. It could simply be that she likes how she looks with relaxed hair. Every woman has the right to choose the look she wants for herself. Live and let live. Sistas are beautiful no matter what crown we wear. 🙂

I think the real issue should be freedom of choice. We don’t need to feel like we must be one thing or another. It’s our hair. We should be able wear it however we want without judgement or repercussion.

I am a Latina married to a black man with not necessarily “Spanish wave” hair and decided to do a Twa to remove all processed and damaged hair. I am not bald but is fairly short. The criticism I got was from the people on my same race and mix race 😏 I was very welcomed if I wore very short wig, but the opposite when I left my curly hair out. Everything was good as long as I cover my natural hair. Perhaps, people are seeing so many “perfection” photos online that cannot come to acceptance with reality. Present time, I have my hair short in a pixie natural salt and pepper and style it every now and then and people cannot stay quite complimenting it. I am glad I did not let the mob break me🧡Praise God for His strength 🙏🏽

My hair has been natural for over 30 years. I used to wear weaves as well, for the best part of am shamed to say.over 15 years Then I realised I didn't even know how to look after my own hair, and didn't like how I looked without my weave in. I realised I had to embrace my own beautiful hair. I stopped wearing weaves, and learnt how to look after my own natural hair. I even began to make my own hair products, and that is the only thing I use in my hair. I love my beautiful natural hair And I wouldn't change it. Our hair is beautiful, and we as black people need to embrace our beauty. The black cosmetic industry is worth millions, and who do you think owns and runs that market. The white man, the Indian man. They now make wigs with baby hairs. Can you believe that. GOD designed us this way for a reason. Black is beautiful and our natural black hair is beautiful...

I stop chemically processing my hair striaight and braided my while my natural hair grow out and I was talked about by my neighbours that I am an unkept woman who was crazy because they did not like my new hair style as if I live my life for people. However I do my hair is to please me and only me because it is my hair on my own head.

Great docu. I was just correcting a 23 year old sister a couple weeks back who said the Crown Law was unnecessary. I told her she was showing her age, or rather lack thereof. It wasn't that long ago that you faced discipline at work for not straightening African texture hair. When I first started locs back in '97 it was acceptance that certain doors might close to me, and I was willing to not go through them if that's what it took to be free from chemicals. A year ago I finally cut/unlocked my hair and now I'm mostly a straight natural with twistouts in the Summer. I will put on a wig if I have somewhere to go and don't want to take the time to do my hair, but even my wigs are of black hair. Ultimately I've simply taken ownership of how I present myself, letting that be whatever I feel from day to day, and always having that include avoiding chemicals that might impair my health. I'm grateful for the versatility.

The documentary is great! I hate that there is so much division in the black community with regard to our hair/bodies. Do what works for you! If youre natural, do that sis! If you’re relaxed, do that sis! If you’re weaved, do that sis! If you want plastic surgery, do that sis! We have to stop making other peoples business our business. We can educate each other on our culture and be proud of it without making other people feel bad for choosing something different.

Wonderful!! This is exactly why I wrote my children's book, Magic Hair. Growing up, I struggled with accepting my natural hair. I wanted to create a book that celebrated our unique hair textures to help our youth see and understand the beauty in our hair at a young age.

Just watched this today and it made me proud that these conversations are becoming more commonplace. There are still some stigmas about embracing one's pride and personal decisions for how they wear their hair, whatever style that may be. I appreciate you for sharing this with us.

Bottom line - proudly wear your hair whatever way you want, be it natural, relaxed, permed, dyed, braided, locks, curly, afro, straight, wavy, etc. and respect others for how they choose to uniquely wear theirs. For true beauty resides in one's heart and inner being (not in one's hair).

This movie made me cry almost all the way through. I can totally relate to being denied by both jobs and Black Men for my being Dark skinned with braids or curly natural hair. I have fine hair and created a product which grew my hair past my shoulders, but lacked the confidence to promote my product. This movie has encouraged me to move forward and promote my product, especially since fine hair is one of the hardest to maintain.. No one should be denied due to how God created them. Thank you for understanding. We need more movies like this to help people understand the daily challenges we face with our hair. God created us the way he wanted, and no one is unattractive in God’s eye; so, who is anyone to decide our worth based soley on our skin or hair? Lastly, we are not little children needing other ethnicities to act as our Parents. If we are grown enough to produce the products WE NEED, then we are grown enough to use the same, or similar methods to figure out how to distribute them among ourselves.

Beautiful music especially, at the end of the video. Information is true, uplifting and strengthening our Black Community is key, not just in America but Worldwide. The Africans and African Diaspora, need to continue to support each other, stay together, in love and unity. Only then, will we truly progress as a Community, that no one can stop. There is something about wearing your natural hair. You shake it and, style it with confidence, knowing its all yours, GOD given blessing that, no one can take away unless we allow them to do. Treat your hair with love, be gentle, don't use harsh products, don't compare yourself to anyone or, any other race. No stress, no drama, let peace reign, let love flow and, it will grow. Natural beauty, positive vibes and energy come from healthy roots, which is the source of our power.

Thank you for this!!! I was 11 when I got my 1st relaxer, and 26 when I decided I was tired of it. I was in my mid-thirties when I discovered the natural hair community on YT and truly unlocked my hair's true potential. It's absolutely beautiful now because I learned how to are for it properly. I finally broke the growth plateau and now it's below my bra strap when straight. But I only straighten once yearly for a good trim. I complimented a beautiful Black young lady today on her hair (which had a fresh set of boho braids) and the smile that came across her face was priceless. I try to speak life into every Black girl and woman I see wearing her natural hair. And the smiles or returned compliments on my hair are always so sweeter and genuine that it just warms my heart. And loved learning more with this movie.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with not having elaborate styling. I think that’s why so many struggle with natural hair. I love my natural hair and I’m not being bothered with braids and twist everyday. Nor am I interested in locs because I like touching my bushy fluffy hair as it grows from my head. Will style when I feel like it but most days you get what nature gives.

I'm mixed and struggled with my hair because I was only taught to groom it like fine hair: wash it everyday, even skip conditioner, brush it and put some fine hair product in it, and then it would be all poofy and dry. Going to bed with no bonnet, wondering why my hair would be dry the next morning! In high school it was finally when I learned how to care for my hair and wear it natural and healthy.

In 1786 the tignon law was put into effect in New Orleans. The tignon law said that creole women had to cover their hair, and could not dress "excessively".

Now I haven't finished watching this but I just feel the need to stop it somewhere beyond the middle,.. and I'm going to watch it and its entirety...BUT... Come on Brothers let's just admit it some of y'all just like that long straight relaxed hair... Be honest... Look at the entertainers, look at the athletes... There's a whole lot of that out there and society... That's why I'm so happy that we is black women have chosen to embrace our natural hair.

I was just talking to a young lady about her natural hair. She always wore weave, but I went out of my way to complement her and commend her for doing so as a young girl who i'm sure is pressured or criticized about the way she wears her hair. I recommended a couple of books to her, and now I can reccomend this video. Thank you so much for creating this. We should cheer each other on as a people in general, but we should most definetly take notice to those who choose to wear their hair natural in a world that tells us it's not accepted everywhere. When i walk past a woman with her natural hair, especially the afro and I'm wearing mine too, there's this overwheming positive exchange. We will smile, compliment each other, and cheer each other on as we walk past each other. It's just like, when a man compliments me on my natural hair, and how good it smells when i pass by. It's different from a compliment with a wig or weave. It's a good energy that I cant fully discribe.❤😊

I never really had anyone told me about my hair until I came to America. I remember once getting ready for a wedding someone compared my hair to my 2 other sisters hair, one a 4a, 4b type hair mine now I know was 4c. Then in high school I had my hair natural, then I hydrated my hair with jerri curl juice for 3 months or more, not for hair growth in the 80’s but manageability. After Christmas holiday my aunt permed my hair for no reason because I didn’t ask her, now I had shoulder length hair. In biology lab this Jamaican boy was laughing with the other boys then next thing I know he yanked my hair that it pulled me back and slammed me to the floor. I remember my right side of my face became spasmodic. Oh it’s real! Laughter, now when I got up took the binoculars type machine and clocked him. I was wrong, I had to go to the principals office, I got suspended, the teacher pretended that I was crazy. Me the kid who didn’t speak, even with the white girls speaking out no adult listened. So I didn’t mind that I defended my hair and my personal space. To this day at 57 I have some nerve damage happening.

And, this is why I am natural! Thank you so much for this documentary. It was uplifting, educational, and very empowering! I am going to keep rockin' my natural do. I ❤ it!

This documentary is so beautiful. It speaks volumes that black women and men too can relate to no matter your background. Black men go through with their hair too. I saw myself in this...I was like yes yes...that happened to me. I am free to be me. I don't have to change for no one. I want my daughters, granddaughters, nieces, every generation of black girls etc to remember this as well. Wow! Well done!!

It simply amazes me how our hair has become an issue in recent years. I'm 49 years old and have never encountered such issues with my hair. I've worn my hair from very young in twists with the barrettes and bows, to pressed, to jerry curl, to wave nouveau, to perm, back to press and then natural before natural was popular. I switch back and forth from press or flat iron to natural now. I've gotten comments but positive. I do me!! I don't care what people think and don't pay attention. All I say is just whatever style, do the upkeep so it'll look decent. Don't want to look like you rolled out of bed and did nothing.
