In this video, I'm demonstrating the difference with Natural Light, Flash, and High Speed Sync. I'm using the Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 85mm ART lens. Which one do you like best?

probably the best KZfaq tutorial on hss. brief, straight to the point, various samples shots, calibrations, differences between various light situation. great tutorial than most on KZfaq.

I LOVE this video! I've only shot in HSS once sometime ago, and I was very happy with the results. I haven't had an opportunity to use HSS until later today for an outdoor location headshot session. I needed to brush up on my knowledge and this video REALLY is a life-saver! Thank you sooo much!!!

Thanks for taking the time to do the comparison. I shoot mostly natural light but that HSS pop of light really adds some magic. Can't wait to put my Xplor 600 TTL through its paces!

Derrel, thanks so much for putting together this video. I'm new to OCF and have been trying to understand the different options. Your comparisons are the best I've found yet, especially because, like you, I shoot with an 85mm and strive for a shallow DOF in my portraits. Two questions: 1) if you had used an ND filter, could you have achieved the same look as HSS with the strobe? And 2) the light in the sky region of the photos was very glowy-peachy looking. Did you do that in post? Gels? Thanks again!

Thank you Samantha. Glad I could help. To answer your questions, yes, an ND filter would have given the same look as HSS with the strobe. And the flare was added in post. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Flash has to support it... Then you turn it on, on ur flash!

Great video Derrel! I really enjoyed seeing you work the scene. I guess my question is that you have a strobe there with a pretty fast sync speed I guess? If we were using a regular flash with a max sync speed of say 1/250 would we then need to be reaching for ND filters? or can we exceed the 1/250 with HSS enabled? Thanks a bunch, from a natural light photographer looking at his flashes collecting dust!

Hey, yes you'd need an ND filter, or a higher F stop. You can exceed 1/250 with HSS as the video explained. thanks for watching

Wow! This was a very great and informative video! I really like the natural light. The photo looks really good, Flash looks so unnatural but with HSS the photo looks really good too, it brings out a more dramatic look to the photo. Still like natural lighting better tho!

HanScreen - the size definitely matters. Bigger the modifier the softer the light. For travel I'd suggest something smaller

Great video bro! Question, in the 2nd photo where you do not use HSS, you mentioned you could use an ND filter to open the aperture to 1.4 I'm just wondering, by using the filter would you have to adjust any other settings like ISO or Flash power? Cheers, From New Zealand :)

TheAtomicSynth thanks for your question. Seems like I need to do a video using an ND filter. With an ND filter, you would need to boost your flash power, and open up your aperture. ISO can stay at 100 or even 50.

Ashish Adlakha I was at around 1/4 power or 1/2. With 2 speedlites you may not get this look. You'll need more power, or get in real close and clone out the flash in post

Hi, I haven't messed with the outer focus points as yet. I borrowed this lens. I'll be purchasing it soon, so I'll have more time to play around with it
