How far from the storm you gotta be to see them

I seen red green and white lightning all at the same time once. Flying red eye at 48000 feet, West over Canada. There was a storm to our south and all the lightning above the storm was red all the lightning in the storm was green and all the lightning under it was white. I could see several lightning strikes per second it was amazing. I wish I had had a phone back then to take video of it.
