Just about copied this setup for a much smaller system, and I’m getting a standing wave in my line... non stop air jackhammer until I turn off water. I think the brass vacuum break/backflow preventer has the fast shutoff... so water is coming past the backflow preventer Into the particulate filter line into the boogie into the orbit... orbit shuts off, sends a hammer wave back, hits the backflow preventer... hammer wave the other way with water flowing back in... and now that wave goes back and forth until the line is shut off. Woke me up at 5:30 this morning sounding like a small jackhammer in the shower. glad you posted this. Gave me a bit more understanding of what’s going on and how to fix it.

How did you fix it please? Tried 2 arrestors on backflow today (water in, out) and still banging. Wonder if valves could be bad? Toro. I could replace the ck valves in preventer with extras i have. Irrigation company coming out again to try to solve. Water pressure and gpm has not changed in 10 years. Ty

So what be the issue after installing a new rain bird heavy duty valve after the water turns off valve makes noise and a little water comes out

A lot of the time this happens on irrigation systems because the valves used on the system close too fast. Not all irrigation valves are the same. Usually brass valves by Buckner Superior are used in these applications because they are “slow closing” valves. Pressure regulators, water hammer arrestors, and check valves also work. Great video!

I had very loud banging each time my zones would turn off. Pretty much all but the drip. I tried several water hammer arrestors and reduced it slightly. I tried lowering the water pressure down to 45 pounds and even that didnt help. I finally raised pressue back up to 60 pounds and added another water pressure reducer after the sprinkler cutoff and lowered it down to 50 psi. That way the house pressure was 10 pounds higher then the sprinkler. Worked like a charm. Dont hear it at all now.

@@Out2fly2 that also works! Sometimes it’s best to have 1 pressure regulator for the house, a second one for the irrigation system and when needed, even 1 for the valves themselves individually set according to how much pressure each zone needs.

Hear a quiet 'humming' when sprinkler system is OFF at the backflow. The copper pipe from backflow to irrigation solenoid actually vibrates but you have to hold the pipe in your hand and you can barely feel it. The irrigation system is new and has no leaks. The main into the home is Pex to copper manifold 1". There is no hum when the irrigation system is running. Any help, thanks!!

Thanks for this! It immediately solved our mystery of the sudden bang at 12:30am each night. You mention that this Orbit timer is known for closing the valve too quickly, & I immediately noticed that I have the same one. Seems like trying a different timer would be a good first step before installing an arrestor.

I don't think the timer is really an issue, all non-mechanical valves utilize solenoids and diaphragms that close very quickly causing the air hammer effect. Also, an arrestor is a cheap fix, whereas a new timer can be costly.

Thanks for the video. The hammer arrestor would be more effective if the main flow into it came from its bottom, which will help it absorb more energy from the water before the water had a chance to turn 90 degrees.

I had a hammer w hen mounted directly to the faucet so I put a hose from the faucet to the timer not a peep now

Air is compressible and can be introduced (as a shock absorber) to reduce/eliminate WATER hammer. I wonder what is "AIR hammer" this person talked about? The device shown in the video is called "water" hammer arrestor, which has entrapped air in it to dampen the shock when fast flowing water is suddenly stopped by a fast shutting valve (like the solenoid valves in washing machine, irrigation system, etc.).

That hammering is nothing. Mine sounds like someone hit the wall with a sledge hammer when it shuts off. Hammer arrestor didn't seem to help all that much.

Yes two arresters did nothing for me on the backflow. Could backflow check valves be bad or perhaps zone valves bad? I'm not sure how air could remain in the pipes since it's running every day but still getting water hammer on certain sounds

So is there an actual water timer out there for sale that has an arrestor built in? Some arrestors cost more than the actual device lol! Ive searched amazon and i havent found one thats built in. Hey ORBIT engineers, back to the drawing board you go!

It's a water hammer. The shockwave propogates through the water not the air.

If your water hammer is caused by your sprinkler pipes shutting off: If you stopped using one of the areas and now there is air in the pressure side of that line, you’ll get a big water hammer when the other lines shut off. Bleed the line of air and the “MC Hammer” will disappear 🤪

Wouldn't the line just bleed itself with water going through it. I still have some banging but they didn't take my suggestion in replacing the valve or taking the valve out and just letting water flow through it. Today they put on two arresters on the backflow in coming and outgoing and that I found out made no difference. Thanks for any insight

WATER hammer arrestor. It's water hammering, not air. Air compresses, water does not. For the love of God please redo all of these inaccuracies. There is no such thing as an 'air hammer arrestor'. lol
