Something like this requires intrigue. Maintaining such intrigue in a game lasting 15-20 hours will be incredibly difficult. The first question is “who was your father?” and the answer is “he was a doctor” and boom, 99% of players would have guessed right away.

To be fair to Gears of War, the reason why the characters slow down for dialogue scenes is so the game can load the next area, it's not purely for narrative. Most AAA developers misunderstood this and now we have slow walking gameplay segments where characters will rattle off exposition in our AAA games.

@StuckDucks Many people, including me, would disagree, I don't know how you would stretch a few days in Seattle and a day of Santa Barbara between multiple games, they even did both sides of the story for both of the characters and it still wouldn't be able to be put into multiple games, it would get very repetitive very fast, they left it at a good point, with Abby and Lev going to where the fireflies are trying to build up and Ellie knowing that Dina left her. The game was amazingly written and shouldn't be looked down upon as the big disappointment of 2020, I have played the game to death with over 26 playthroughs with 18 of those being grounded challenges. I hope you read this and take some of what I said into mind.

@plmokm33 3 жыл бұрын
@@honestlyowain1121 Here's the thing though: In the first game you followed the same two characters without it getting repetitive. When people say that the writing is shitty in this game, they don't mean part II on it's own. If you look at it as a standalone, the writing isn't horrible, it's just bland. The issue people have is that they took established characters and had them do things that they would never do based on what we know of them. They had characters who had no place acting as stupid as they did do so for the sake of the narrative they wanted to tell. I imagine if they made this game as a standalone set in the same universe, it would've gotten far less flak. I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and got your money's worth out of it with 26 playthroughs. However, that doesn't make it amazingly written, or even well written. I've enjoyed the hell out of games that were honestly dog shit. It is possible to enjoy something bad.
@theprowler18
@theprowler18 3 жыл бұрын
@@honestlyowain1121 There are also just as many that absolute didn't like this game at all. Actually, this was literally 3 entries smashed into one. And yes, they need more breathing space for each of the plotlines to be better developed and actually have weight and impact to it. It commits so many cardinal sins of bad writing (from expository dialogue that spells out character development that only matters in one or two scenes, contrivances and bad decision made by characters that go against their established traits or actions, and a bloated 3rd act that goes on for too long and unwittingly thrusts a new enemy group at the last minute, completely does a 180 on its themes in the most incredulously jarring matter, and ends up diluting its point by the very end of the game) that it is hard to ignore the issues upon a second go around. It doesn't help that this game offers nothing after beating it outside of extra difficulty modes and challenges. The pacing was complete slog to get through and I would have had each day back and forth and had the flashbacks be the introduction to the story instead. There is a good story here to tell but the structure and pacing dilutes and kills the emotional impact of those moments that should land.

@@connorbranscombe6819 Is that why she was carrying a gun around? Simply climbing onto the truck is dangerous enough at the stage she was at. And think about it, the world ended almost 25 years ago, humanity is slowly rebuilding but the world still is extremely dangerous and filled with zombies and cults like the one we see in the game. Humans are needed more than ever, so children and pregnant women are of extreme importance. So what do we do? Let's just send out a heavily pregnant woman out there, fuck it why not. Even if she was only a medic, the simple fact she isn't inside the stadium where her and her child are safe is extremely stupid and non-sensical. At no point throughout the Abby section do we get hints that the WLF are so short on hands that they send out someone like Mel. It's just a girl boss moment that makes no sense.

First time I've seen anyone say anything nice about Spec Ops Mostly because everyone calls out that, when you take a step back, its "YOU are doing this" message doesn't work when you literally cannot do anything else in the game, so if you don't want to do the big bad war crimes, all you can do is just not play the game Meaning you spend money to play a video game that actively wants you to stop playing it And also how indie sensation Undertale blows it out the fucking water on what Spec Ops was trying to do with its genocide route
@noelleholiday61
@noelleholiday61 2 ай бұрын
@@WhimsicottFanaticI think the thing about Spec Ops:The Line is that it saves its twist until the end. Up until that point, it just seems like a typical Call Of Duty affair, and it's less about your actions as a player specifically and more about this character you happen to be in control of. He controls the narrative, you just follow along. Less of an MGS3 "The Sorrow" type thing where it's specifically supposed to be about your choices as a player And moreso just flipping the typical gameplay structure of a war-glorifying shooter on its head

You know what game did this “Revenge is bad” thing much better? Sifu. An extremely different type of game, but hear me out. You start off being killed alongside your dad, but you come back for a reason you don’t know yet and you go to kill all the people responsible, who comprise of this small group of martial arts masters with magic powers, but is lead by someone who isn’t shown to have any real power that would help him in combat (some heavy MGS3 inspiration there) and the games immersive, difficult and satisfying combat helps you on this quest, you don’t even kill everybody along your way- some maybe, but the wide majority of jobbers can be seen writhing on the floor in pain, you’re just trying to get to the people on top who you know are responsible for the death of you and your father. You feel like an absolute badass taking everyone down, and when you finally get to the last guy, the conversation you have reveals that he was practically your older brother, he has all of your moves and probably uses them more effectively than you at this point in the game. When you finally kill him you find out that he killed your father because he wanted to get to this magic pendant that would bring back his wife and daughter, but after realizing his mistake he decided to give it to you. To which you are given a message along the lines of “To use Wude is to show that you can easily beat someone, and when you decide not to, they won’t want to fight anymore.” This gives you at least a base level of guilt, and as you replay through the campaign, you find out that all of the figure heads are kind of pathetic, each with their own problems. In order to spare them all, you essentially have to make the situation harder for yourself, and extend the fight, and then spare them just before handing them the finishing blow. This strategy makes you feel like you are doing the right thing, while still making you feel like a badass, so the quality of the game is not diminished by the story. And sparing the last boss is an extremely difficult task, because he doesn’t want to be forgiven and makes it as hard as possible to spare him, by the time you’ve gotten the good ending, you feel like a true unbeatable master, yet you feel smarter and wiser than when you started, and the best thing is that it was all your choice, the game naturally directed you to do the bad thing first without forcing you, you could’ve gotten the best ending first time around but it manages to make you feel bad for your choices, and satisfied when you rectify them- I don’t think it could’ve been done better.

I agree and I don't think it can easily be any other way. It is being achieved from time to time in the industry and only in specific parts of some games but it is not something to be expected. 3A games have to check some boxes and all of the 3A industry uses fighting as their primary challenge for the player. And it makes sense, games are perfect for this, emulating flights or exploring a world. Because of that though its difficult to be completely coherent as pieces of art. Only indie games have this luxury. So yeah , all the killing in tlou2 must be disregarded to some extent if you want to allow yourself to be convinced by its story. It's a pact between the player and the developers, unique to this medium of entertainment but not unlike other pacts in different forms of entertainment. Like theater, where one can wave invisible props (e.g. blades) around and everything is ok. Cause the actors or the developers or the directors are not your opponents, they are your allies. And if for some reason you start experiencing anything in bad faith then it will 100% let you down. The shadow of the 1st tlou is the only reason people talk negatively about the 2nd one. It's understandable but one should reflect on it if he wishes to enjoy the tlou2 for what it is , and not get overran by negativity because of what it's not. Cause there not gonna be another tlou1 ever again.

How is the gameplay not supposed to be part of the art? Most of the impact comes from the way and order in which you're put into the shoes of these characters throughout the course of the story. I especially don't understand how you could look at both of the Ellie/Abby fights with the context around them and really think that gameplay is an afterthought when it comes to the experience as a whole. Unless I'm misinterpreting your point?

Is anyone almost irrationally annoyed at Abby's dad saving a ZEBRA? Of all the animals to put resources into saving...during an apocalypse after the collapse of civilization...you choose a zebra?? One of the most unpleasant & useless species on the planet! That are meant to live in giant herds with fellow zebras out on the savannah. This isn't even the right climate for them! I'm sorry, but you're not going to convince me Abby's father is able to provide a great quality of life for zebras in his situation...and it's not like he's attempting to rebuild their population & natural environment, where they can survive in the wild. It's not like he can get anything out of that zebra either. No milk, no eggs, no good meat, no reliable young to eat...can't ride it, no physical labor it could help with, no protection it could provide. Can't even pet the damn thing or use it for warmth via snuggles in cold weather. It's never going to show affection or form a real relationship with you. If anything, that zebra is going to hurt people and risk alerting passerbys to their location...while you dump precious resources & time into keeping it caged & alive, until it dies or escapes. The risk he's taking (and therefore making everyone who depends on him take) is not worth it in any way. I am convinced that the only reason they chose zebras is because they could use an easy horse model but give it pretty coloring, making it stand out. I mean, it's definitely a prettier animal to watch him wrangle, compared to a horse or a cow...or one of the other animal species that would actually make sense.

There's a Lebanese-Canadian dude that wrote a book called "Anima". SPOILERS The main character ends up leaving the bad guy stranded in the middle of nowhere so that vultures slowy pick him apart. That was good writing, because you didn't exactly know how the main character felt deep inside, as he was processing everything along the way. That was an unexpected take on revenge, which really stuck with me. Ellie sparing Abby made some sense, but it was so poorly made clear why she did so that it just felt lazy. The game's visual identity is miles off the first game, since it's pretty much grey and wishy washy the whole time. Finally, Abby is unlikable as f*ck, simply put. Part II was all over the place.

I think there is something Ellie should have asked that we both would have wanted her to ask, and would have even made TLOU2 more redeemable. Why did you kill Joel? She didn't even know. The player did, and Ellie was treated as if she already knew. She didn't. In some way, I would have wanted to turn this whole revenge shit around for a good part of the game and let that question give birth to some form of bonding, however strange and tortuous that may be for the characters. We would get to know Abby at the same time Ellie did. Though tbh, I'm just, like, not even able to write a single sentence without feeling like I might have to change a whole lot of shit
@Winasaurus

It would have made it make so much more sense for Ellie to consider sparing her too. Because she could have met Abby's dad personally before the surgery was going to start, so there could be some personal link there. Instead, from her perspective it seems like any random revenge murder, she suddenly feels the need to spare Abby. Would she have spared the brother of the guy who almost killed Joel when he was impaled on rebar if he turned up and killed Joel? Abso-fucking-lutely not.

@@PiesCanFly That is pretty much my point. Ellie had to guess, but then, she still had no clue as to why Abby was the one to do the deed. If you wanna have a narrative in which you show that people have some humanity too, it's usually best that we find out along with the protagonist. That would also just make it much better for Abby and her crew. It would honestly just make the fact that she decides to randomly pardon her much more redeemable... In a future. Or so I believe, of course.

@@lProN00blThe point is that Ellie doesn't even know why Abby did what she did. If she knew then there might be some slight hint of a reason to spare her (like feeling like they're even because they both had their dads killed or something), but because Ellie doesn't know, her sparing Abby makes absolutely no sense. Statistically her revenge killing Joel could mean she's from the cannibal group, or just fireflies in general, which wouldn't mean anything to her all so she would have no inclination to spare her. i come back and watch this video all the time, it so perfectly captures and explains the conflicted feelings i had after the game. i think some of the core problems of the game wasn't only in that they force the player to act out all this violence to teach them "violence is bad and will get you nowhere" but that 1. this is already such an obvious, overused lesson that it becomes much less affecting and more childish (which just puts pressure on the creators to teach you this lesson in a new, compelling way that will actually make you think about it, which they didn't) 2. the game relied so heavily on shock value and excessive violence and neglected other areas that would actually render these shocking moments as things that mean something and SAY something rather than just, you know, shock you, and 3. unlike in the first game (where for pretty much the entirety of the game you are in the same headspace as joel and you do the things the game wants you to do because you want to do them as well because you learn and understand things at the same time as the characters and thus usually have the same motivations as them) in the second game you arrive at the conclusion the game is trying to get you to far too early. you know why the game is making you do this, you get the lesson, you get the motivation, and so (at least for me) you don't NEED to enact all this violence anymore, but the game forces you continue to do it over and over until the CHARACTERS finally reach the conclusion you as the player reached hours ago. and so regardless of how emotional or compelling the game was it still felt empty at the end. love the videos always jakey keep it up 🕺

@@foxwizards No problem, sorry I was a dick. It just upsets me that this game is disliked over what is essentially people not understanding it, and that sounds arrogant of me but I wouldn't care if it wasn't SO widespread. And the fact that KZfaq videos with tons of views also misunderstand it, and these are the people who are helping people form views about the story, is frustrating and sad for the game. And themes/main theme can be hard to figure out, especially considering that there are plenty of low effort stories out there that can mess with how you interpret things in media. Most importantly for theme, you have to look at what caused the arcs of the main character (or characters, in this case), what the ending means for the possible theme (and if it's a cautionary tale or not), and how the theme is seen by the antagonists (antagonists, especially villains, usually have a different take on the theme, one that goes against the message the story wants to show you, and thus, they often suffer for it. For TLOU2, you could say: Is it showing me that violence is bad? In a broad sense, yes. But it's too broad, it could be applied to too many stories. Even war stories are trying to show that war is bad, not necessarily just violence. And in the end, it doesn't really seem like Ellie and Abby learn that violence is wrong. And what does Ellie's flashback to her conversation with Joel when she's drowning Abby have to do with violence? Nothing. Is it showing me that forgiveness is good? Hm, there's an argument there. Abby ends up teaming up with Scars, though she really doesn't seem to have much personal beef with Scars in general. Ellie seems to learn to or want to forgive Joel in the end, and there's that conversation between her a Joel too. But... Ellie forgiving Joel doesn't really work for her sparing Abby. She doesn't forgive Abby, she doesn't really even know that much about her (only the player does.) And the antagonists like the Scars and WLF, what do they have to do with forgiveness? Well, they do refuse to forgive each other for past violence, but forgiveness is the wrong word here, militaries don't really forgive each other, it's more like they refused to... move past it. Hey, move past it, moving on. Ellie moving on from Joel helps to explain her sparing Abby. She doesn't forgive Abby, but in that moment of holding complete control over Abby's fate, she realizes it doesn't appease her, and it's doing nothing to erase the guilt she feels for not forgiving Joel, which is another example of her inability to move on. Not all of her pain could've been escaped by choosing to move on (Joel would still be dead) but she would've had more time with him when he was alive, Jesse would still be alive, Dina would still be her partner, and her soul would be unburdened with what she ended up doing in Seattle. Her sparing Abby is a massive step into adopting this new idea, as is leaving Joel's guitar in the old farmhouse. For Abby, she also couldn't move past her father's death, and she ended up almost completely destroying her and Owen's relationship, turning her body into a weapon, and ultimately causing the deaths of all her friends. And she adapts the theme much quicker in the story than Ellie, as it starts with her getting her revenge on Joel, and though it's not directly said, she doesn't get the peace she thought that would bring her. Reconnecting with Owen also helps set her back on the path towards learning how to move on from past pain, which is shown by her being the "top Scar killer" but choosing to save some Scar kids, as well as ultimately choosing to completely abandon the WLF in favor of rejoining the Fireflies. Just look at how Abby acts in Santa Barbara, it's nothing like how she acts at any point during her WLF service. Now I'll add, there's technically not a wrong way to interpret a story, and there are almost always many themes at play in any given (good) narrative. But harming your own enjoyment over what is sort of a misinterpretation of the main theme(s) is a bad thing because it's keeping you from something you might enjoy if you came closer to the intent.

I think there’s a really good game in Last of Us 2. I feel like Naughty Dog really should’ve marketed Part 2 as Abby’s story without even mentioning that Joel and Ellie are in this game. Market it as a separate story in the same world and we slowly start to realize where this is going. I dunno, I think the story is alright, but the executions isn’t there.

Have you ever heard of A Second Chance at Sarah? Because you, nor literally anyone else, has, that's why this couldn't be marketed as an Abby story. Because Neil Druckmann knows nobody would buy a Neil Druckmann story, they'd buy a Naughty Dog story. We're actually seeing an example of that with Zach Snyder repurposing a rejected Star Wars story without the Star Wars license, and it's not doing too hot.

i feel the issue truly stems from the lack of a sequel being necessary, at all. like what you’ve emphasized, the power to draw our own conclusions from the first games ending is taken away from us, just as the power to choose our roles in the cycle of violence is nonexistent in the gameplay of tlou2.

Can I ask what conclusions you were unable to draw because of the sequel? Also, I really don't understand this "the power to choose our roles in the cycle of violence" take that I keep hearing. Like genuinely, what do you expect this game to be? Do you want the option to not go on the revenge quest? Do you want the option to kill Abby in the theater? Does the game just end right there when you make that decision, or were they supposed to create a second version of the game for when you decide you don't want to experience the story they wanted to tell? And that's kind of the crux of it, too. The Last of Us is not a choose your own adventure game, it's a highly polished (in terms of visuals and sound) narrative game with shooting and scavenging. I don't understand what ambiguous conclusions you're not able to draw from the end of the first game. Joel lied to Ellie. If you're engaged in the story, hopefully you understand why and think about the morality of that decision. The end. Part 2, Ellie found out. She confronted Joel and they begin to mend their relationship. Joel dies before their relationship fully heals, sending Ellie on a mission for revenge.

I think the biggest issue I had with the story of TLOU2 is that any time Ellie had a large, significant choice in front of her, she sought out the option that made things worse for herself and others 90% of the time. Ellie makes evil, selfish and short-sighted decisions wherever possible. She makes life worse, and shorter, for everyone she cares about, and by the end of the game she has nothing and nobody, not even her connection to Joel via the guitar he taught her to play. She even made the worst decision twice, by going after Abby again after what her last expedition cost her family and friends. There's no resolution. There's no growth. We watch our surrogate daughter from TLOU choose to devolve into the worst possible version of herself, and none of the agency we're afforded as gameplayers can stop it from happening. The best thing Ellie could have done at any point was stop, turn around and go home, try to live as best she can, keeping Joel's memory alive without throwing her life and others' lives away in pursuit of revenge; The best thing we can do as gamers is stop playing the game, and not follow her down that road.
@Shawak9
@Shawak9 Жыл бұрын
There would've been "no growth" if she would've killed Abby. The Ellie screaming "I'm going to fucking kill you" at the start of the game would've been the same Ellie who's screaming while drowning Abby.

Yes, the victim is responsible for the actions of someone unrepentantly violent. By the way, this game was written by Neil Druckmann, who also fired people for being the *victims* of his sexual predator best friend, Robert Cogburn. That might explain why you're supposed to think this exactly. You're never supposed to broach the topic of why Abby never acknowledges what she's done as wrong, you're supposed to think everyone is wrong for wanting to stop her.
@darthskele
@darthskele Жыл бұрын
@@Shawak9 "there would have been no growth if she killed Abby" yeah, that was the point. That revenge is bad, and it would have driven the point home harder if she had gotten it and returned home to an empty house. It didn't make sense for Ellie to release Abby after seeing an image of Joel and getting her fingers bitten off. If anything, that should have made her want to kill her more. This is less about wanting Abby dead, and more about wishing that the writing would have respected Ellie's character and her motivations more instead of putting them aside in favor of preaching this game's message.
@Shawak9
@Shawak9 11 ай бұрын
@@darthskele Yeah as you say I realized, these writers are bad and lazy. They don't think about honest character motivations, they just write the shit that comes to their brain without questioning it too much. They didn't dedicate years of their lives into understanding the character of Ellie it's us, the gamers.
@25cats
@25cats 8 ай бұрын
@@darthskelei dont agree with this. Im not good with words so bear with me. Ellie’s writing would have been disrespected if she Did kill Abby. It’s pretty clear that her bloodlust for Abby is a mask to cope with her terrible ptsd and survivor’s guilt, its the only thing that keeps her going and Ellie just wants to stop seeing Joel’s mangled carcass every time she thinks of him. She knows full well killing Abby won’t make her nightmares stop, and when she sees her tied up and malnourished she doesn’t feel anything and doesn’t even attempt to kill her. The dialogues on the beach makes clear Abby is done and Ellie wants to fight her just because what was the point of everything then. She doesn’t even necessarily want to win, (if she cared about her life she wouldn’t have turned her back on Abby and told her to go, Abby could have killed her in a dozen different ways) she just wants to be finally at peace. It’s not explicitly told what goes on through her mind when drowning Abby, but in a moment of catharsis, hungry and tired and sad and destroyed and crying her heart out, she finally remembers Joel and lets Abby go. It’s not something she does to “preach the games message”, it’s something she does because she always knew, and always got told by others, it was pointless. Hell, she constantly draws months like a psycho on her diary because that’s what she knows she is, a stupid moth to a flame that’s only gonna burn her. Like the boat on the two title screens, she can finally let go, and when she does she realizes she is all alone. Her biggest fear, like she told us in tlou 1, being alone. Her horrible actions caused her to lose everything, from her mother’s knife, to Dina, to her fingers. But the worst thing that she lost was her ability to play the guitar, the only thing that ties her to Joel. When she leaves Joels guitar in the ranch, it’s her final goodbye to him, and the final goodbye to Joel from the game. Ellie can learn how to play left-handed, but she has to start from scratch, like she has to start from scratch rebuilding her life. A criticism i constantly hear about the game is “Ellie makes horrible decisions one after another, they wrote her like she’s a dumbass” and no, they wrote her like she’s mentally ill. Ellie is depressed, has survivors guilt from the hospital, severe ptsd, and people expect her to make lucid decisions. I think that’s overall what made people hate this game. It superficially disrespects the characters of Joel and Ellie, but in reality it just makes them real people, incoherent with themselves, emotional, making mistakes and paying for them in full. In short, Ellie killing Abby would have ignored her character arc, and made her just a static character with no internal turmoil. Just a “kill abby” machine. Would have been a terrible ending.

If a game has the possibility for a non-lethal take down, sneaking past enemies, or gives me any type of pacifist choice, I will usually take it. That's how big the impact of MGS3 was for me. I learned to "be good" whenever possible, even if it does not have any impact to the story of the games. I started pacifist playing just for the sake of it being the right moral choice. Plus , it challenges your view of the game and your actions all while giving you a hard choice at the end , I want to talk about the details but I don't wanna spoil it cuz a remake is coming next year and I think it's a game that everyone should play without knowing much about the story

Instead of people saying “Death Stranding is a really unique game that I’m not into” everyone just thinks “You don’t do anything, this game is shit and pretentious.”

You know I had a very bad case of the common cold around the time that game came out. I played that game for like nine days straight while suffering through the worst headaches and fever I've had in years and to be honest the sort of calm and chill gameplay that didn't require too much thought really helped me through that time. It's not a game I'll revisit anytime soon but I do appreciate it existed when it did.

Bobby Jimboy I don’t even like Death Stranding that much really. It’s a seriously flawed game that thinks it’s being more profound and inventive than it is. My point isn’t that we shouldn’t criticize games or that “artistic” games are automatically better. What I’m saying is that mainstream gaming has become so homogenized, that people no longer appreciate creative ideas. Look at Spider-man on PS4. Really fun game, but it plays like a checklist of every overused AAA mechanics ever. Same thing with Dad of War. Very few people are going to argue it isn’t a well made game, yet it also plays like the most generic amalgamation of overused AAA game tropes. Games like Death Stranding, The Last Guardian, Killer 7 don’t get the same automatic plaudits from fans and critics because they actually take risks and pose new ideas, while other games are seen as less flawed because they’re safer.

The first time I encountered a safe, I just listened to the clicks to find out the combination and thought, “Oh, this is neat! You actually have to have an attention span and limited skill to get this extra loot!” Then, I realized, there’s always a note somewhere, which made it feel less significant.

I sense that your thought was the first design intention, and then someone whined about 'accessibility' and rather than have an option in the menu, they did the notes thing instead. (Unless there is such an option in the menu, then it's even worse.)

This is my first time watching your videos, I have subbed and completely agree with your viewpoint. I've always felt ND games were repetitive. BUT, the multiplayer of the first game is what was the true star. It took the very best, made it better, and still have an active multiplayer over 10 years later. The roller-coaster the Factions community has been put through by ND is a story all in of itself.

Oh boy. Yep. A huge misstep by ND. To not communicate about it properly has made it far far worse

I totally agree with your take on the morgue in the tent scene that you walk through as Abby as when I first walked through, I was like “oh shit these are all the WLFs that I have killed as Ellie just because they were in my way” and would it have made it more impactful with the whole revenge is bad story they had been building.
