Over the summer my great grandma kept mentioning how she wanted to make some áłkaad, which is Navajo Cake.
My mother and I finally decided to make it possible for her by agreeing to do so. With the help of family & friends, we got the ingredients and brought over the necessary stuff needed to make Navajo cake.
It just so happened that the day we decided to make the Navajo cake, it was a hot summer day which reached 110 degrees!! This actually caused my phone to continuous over heat so I did not get as much recording done as I wished to have.
Nonetheless, we got it done and that night my younger siblings and I stayed up watching the fire until it started to get windy, blowing all through the night. The cake came good though and now she’s wanting to make another one for her birthday in December. Which we’re all looking forward to once again.
Making Navajo cake is something my mom and I enjoy doing, whether it’s for a kinaalda ceremony or just something to enjoy with family, it’s our way of keeping our culture and tradition alive.
I do hope you enjoy the video and understand that as Navajo people, we all do things slightly differently from one another but that’s what makes us unique.
We adapt and one medicine man once said, “our culture is forever changing, but it is up to us to control how it changes!”

I’m Mescalero Apache and Terra Humara and Spanish descent. I got to be stay with my grandma when I was in first grade till 4 th . She would let me help her cook in her outdoor kitchen. You are so lucky to know and learn from your grandparents!! Not everyone has that chance, get as much knowledge as you can while they are still here. Help them whenever you are able... without them, your life would be so different. Take it from someone who never knew their grandparents...

Same here! My grandparents knew how to hunt, gather berries, and ride horses. After the Relocation Act and Indian Works Program, my dad and his siblings never learned those things. I didn’t know my gradfather because my grandparents split, and he went back to Browning, where he had to buy land (those programs cut off our entitlements), and my grandma was battling health problems. So we are now “urban Indians”.

This is great! I had a camera, the time and my grandfather, but I squandered the opportunity to record him. You and the rest of your family can see and hear what your great grandmother is/was like. If I had the opportunity again I would interview my late grandfather. To ask him questions about his family and way of life in his day, or what he would say to his great, great great and beyond grandchildren. Thanks for sharing. I miss seeing old grandmas with their scarfs and skirts and Chai with their old cowboy hat. In the coming years we will not see them anymore, so thanks for sharing a piece of your personal life with the rest of us.

Always great to see them both along with the Family there. One day we will all reunite. The grandparents always say, you have my ts’áá (Navajo Basket); when we get a chance to see each other. Totally need to make them one personally. They are such great loving parents and grandparents. I and half Chickasaw my father was sent to Indian Boarding school where he couldn't speak Chickasaw and he lost his language. He can understand some words but, that about it. I love talk to elders since they have many stories to tell.

Yá'át'ééh, I had to watch this video It's so nostalgic. I too used to make this cake with my grandmother. She would tell me not to feed it to the sheep, and the goats it was not their food. It's she that gave me my Dine' blood. Seeing the rez is so bittersweet. It reminds me of family and friends. It also reminds of the hardships the Dine' and other Native tribes have gone through. I was born for the Black Sheep clan. Thank you for sharing your family with us.😺

according to Navajo/Diné teachings, your cake is supposed to come out perfect. if your cake comes out wrong, like it's watery or dry, they say the person making the cake is doing something wrong. this is why people are told not to be doing anything during a puberty ceremony because it will affect the cake in a bad way. some matriarchs will even tell people not to be doing hanky-panky, especially the person going through a puberty ceremony. I posted this comment earlier but KZfaq did not post it. don't know why. lol.
