Navajo Weavers Carry on Centuries-Old Tradition

The Navajo Indians of the southwestern United States have been weaving blankets for hundreds of years. Originally, their primary goal was to make something that would keep them warm. In time, however, people began to appreciate the blankets for their beauty. Suli Yi of VOA's Mandarin Service traveled to Navajo country to learn about the Navajo weavers and their art. It is narrated by Ruth Reader.

I was corrected by the sweet lady who was weaving in the backroom. It's "toad leena" not "toad a leena." I should have looked at the spelling. This is a desitnation for those who truly love Native American experiences like no other. Northwestern New Mexico and eastern Arizona are loaded with hidden gems like this. Unforgettable. This is one of the reasons I moved from NYC to New Mexico.

FOR YOU THAT DON'T KNOW THAT EIGHT SIDED HOUSE IS IN THE PATTERN OF WHAT IS CALLED A HOGAN. THE OLD ONES WERE AND ARE ROUND. THEY HAVE WINTER HOGANS AND SUMMER HOGANS. ONE MADE JUST OF LOGS AND MUD, AND THE OTHES JUST LOGS SO IT IS COOL IN THE SUMMER.

Im from Arizona.. I grew up in diffrent schools were I there was the minority. At one school I was the only billigona!(white person) that was like fun' the kid' my pears', were verry kind. I felt like there we were like all the same kind of human beings. Except my hair was blond and not as long and fine.

weavers around the country use other sources like camel or llamas. There are others I'm sure but I can't remember right now.

BUT RUGS MADE BY THE NAVOJO ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAT IN THE ARABIAN COUNTRIES. THEY DON'T DYE THEIR WOOL ARAB DOES. PATTERSN ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND IS THE LOOMS.

@@barbarapatterson4132 After a 10 year courtship, We finally married and are returning to the Nation, near Shiprock, N. M. (your use the word; Billagana, serves only to highlight a a 'Pop' difference between myself and my Wife and Her huge extended family. Does this mean that our One God loves some of us better than others of the Human Species? I have learned to run all of whatever I may say through a "One" filter: 'do my own words Unite, or do I introduce division? Any reply would be most appreciated. Thank You
