The commenters below are correct about the ship versions. The ship modeled in Naval Action is the Renommee (or Renown, after capture) built in 1744 in Brest. Numerous Renommees had been constructed before her build and after her breakup in 1771. She was captured by Capt. Shirley of the Dover, a 44 gun, and taken into the Royal Navy in 1747 (old calendar), serving in the Channel Fleet and out of Port Royal, Jamaica. Her commanders were an illustrious breed from construction to breakup and she was a much sought after frigate and the fastest of her day.

A very cool and interesting video, but I believe you may have the wrong Renommée. The one in the game is modelled after the 1744 Renommée, designed by François Clairins-Deslauriers and Blaise-Jospeh Ollivier, the famous French naval engineer, captured in 1747 by HMS Dover and renamed HMS Fame in the Royal Navy. You can tell by her transom and her figure-head, much too old-school for a ship of the 1790s. Here is a link to the French monography, with pictures of the plans, decoration and a model of the ship: ancre.fr/fr/monographies/20-monographie-de-la-renommee-fregate-de-8-1744.html

+Duncan MacDerby By jove sir, you are right. It had crossed my mind, wondering why the french built a ship so late with a lateen sail configuration, as lateens had long become a thing of the past by then on warships. Well, looks like i'll be re-doing this video. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. :)

EDIT: According to the Naval Action Facebook, 24th March 2015 - this La Renommée is the 1744 Siréne Class, captured by the Royal Navy and renamed HMS Renown. This is NOT the Galathée class frigate Républicaine française of 1796, later renamed HMS Renommée, as described in this video. This ship appeared way earlier. This was a great video though, although incorrect. Sorry for debunking this, but it's still incorrect facts. Keep up the good work 👍 Original (debunked): Not the Pallas-Class La Renommée that was renamed HMS Java in 1811? Both the Galathée and Pallas class frigates that bears the name La Renommée share similar fates into the hands of the Royal Navy, and their armament is pretty similar. Naval Action does not state which one and it's a bit confusing. Why do you think this is the Galathée class and not the Pallas class?

Sorry, but you're talking about the wrong ship. The Renommée in-game is the one built in 1744 at Brest to plans by F. G. Clairin-Deslauriers. Just look at her quarter galleries. That design was only used from about 1690 to the late 1740ies. The British renamed her to Renown. She served until 1771. Furthermore the ship you were referring to is a 12 pdr Frigate built at Bordeaux after plans by R.-A. Haran. The Ship in-game is an 8 pdr Frigate (9 pdr in British service). Reno in game is actually the 1744-version, not the 1794 version you described.

+Johannes kostaja_ Just google 1744 Renommee ship model, there is alot of info there. That is where devs get their models for game too.

+AxeManAnt it's worth noting that "Renommée" means "renamed" in French (feminine gender). It's pronounced "Reu-noh-may" (the reu sound is like "ea" in early"). So perhaps they got sick of renaming her and decided to name her "Renamed." :)
@AxeManAnt8 жыл бұрын
Excellent info! Thanks! Considering how many French ships had that name over the years, I'm sure you're right. And pronunciation is not my strong suit as you may have noticed but thanks for that as well :)
@stockmanbooks5 жыл бұрын
Actually the French word "renommée" in its normal use means "fame" or "renown." The British originally wanted to rename la Renommée as the Fame. But in 1748 when she was commissioned into the Royal Navy and first commanded by Washington Shirley, the captain who captured her, she was named the Renown.

She then became the Java, which was taken by the Constitution.
@AxeManAnt8 жыл бұрын
+Steve “Whiskey” Wilson That was actually a different ship, with the same name. She was of a different class of frigate and wasn't captured and taken into service in the royal navy until 1811, one year later than the Renommee in this video was dismantled.
@abyssaljam4418 жыл бұрын
+AxeManAnt I asume she was then taken by the Canstitution during the war of 1812. that was a sort time in the Royal Navy. :P
