In this video, I show you how to capture ships, including damaging sails, dis-masting the enemy and the boarding mini game.
Thanks to Spartan IV 001 for the video suggestion. :)

That was super helpful. I had no idea you could demast a ship! This games combat is really in depth with demasting and even how your shots can do different damages with how the ships angled. I just want to thank you for doing my suggested video! I'm going to go try to capture my first ship today!
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
+Spartan IV 001 Yeah, the combat is very detailed. for instance, each cannon shot is track by the game and a single shot can penetrate through the hull, kill some crew, ricochet off a cannon and burst through the other side of the ship. Its crazy awesome. Also, hitting an enemies cannon is the best way to start a fire on a ship, and watching one explode when it's magazine catches is pretty amazing. There is alot more going on beneath the surface than one might expect.

if you shoot slightly above the ship were you don't see splinters fly off the armor doesn't do anything and you can snipe the crew or fire into the windows in the stern and it sweeps the deck

You can actually damage the crew pretty easily with grape without taking down the armor. The crew hitbox is right above the gunnels on the side of the ship. You can usually clear a trader lynx's decks after a broadside or two.

Hey AxeManAnt, its Lord Maximus Duperouzel, Thanks for the in game message about your videos, found your videos very helpful. Im interested in this time period, and loved the tv mini series Hornblower, which really got me into this history a little more. The last time I played this style of game was in Empire Total War. If you are looking to have an extra player, I could join, if not then no worries. Thanks

Yeah, if you want to "join the dark side" as it were, you can keep your exact character, all you need to do is attack a british ship (probably best to attack an npc rather than a player lol) but its a one way ticket, once you become a pirate you cant re-join the brits unless you create a new character.So it's gotta be something you're sure you want to do.

Thank you for the video - very helpful - couple questions though - 1.What does sending to Admiralty do? 2. Can you put the captured cargo back on the trader and send it to outpost? 3. Can you sell the captured cargo/is that the same as "send to chat" Thank you in advance!
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
+Arthur Chapman Thanks for watching :) 1. Nothing yet, hasn't been implemented 2. no, if a captured trader is carrying too much cargo for your main ship then you must sail it to port or abandon some of the cargo. however, if you send your main ship to outpost and sail the trader, you can teleport back with it. 3. yes you can sell the capped cargo, but sending to chat is merely showing others what you have, not a means of gifting or selling cargo. Hope that helps.

Here is a tip for capturing cutter sized ships, no need to remove the armour from the ship, just load up grape shots and fire it into the open deck/side and kill the crew off, after that a free capture WHITOUT the broken minigame :) cheers!.

I hope you keep on posting more helpful vids. Its very good for new players getting started and getting rid of the basic cutter. Hopefully soon for me :) I got one more question off the topic of this vid, but is it worth to start crafting ships from the very beginning or do you guys have any other suggestions how to get started with earning money?
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
+Litera Patens Thanks for watching, and i certainly do plan on keeping the vids coming :) As for your question, yes...If crafting is something that is going to interest you, the sooner you start working on it the better. Crafting has a seperate XP system, so even if you were the highest rank in the game, you couldnt craft much without levelling it up first. The only problem is gathering the resources to craft....you can capture ships and break them up in port for some parts needed for ship building (also breaking ships gives you a chance to get some rare drops like ship blueprints and crafting notes, which are required to craft the larger more powerful vessels). Or you could save up a bunch of gold and purchase a bunch of raw materials (capturing traders works too as they often carry raw materials) and then start crafting from there. The only problem with capturing alot and breaking ships, is you get more gold and resources out of it, but less XP, sinking ships gives more xp than capturing so it's a balancing act. I'm going to be crafting alot more soon, but first im just trying to rank up for a bit. Crafting takes a bit of getting used to and im no expert at it by any means, havnt done much of it but hope that helps a little.
@literap4748
@literap4748 8 жыл бұрын
+AxeManAnt Thanks for the answer! So for me i also decided to rank up first but take the opportunities of capturing traderships as often as possible to create a pile resources in my outpost. Do you have any experience in trading resources? Some told me it is not really time-money efficient compared to missions etc.
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
I have very little trading experience. Playing Elite dangerous for 6 months killed any desire to do any trading in any game, lol. The economy in Naval action is very bare bones at the minute, so trading isnt very intuitive, and in my experience not too profitable right now. Some people do like it and seem to do ok with it, but mostly it is as you said, it's probably better just to do missions and get involved in battles, than trading. Trying to level up means you need to do alot that already earns you gold anyway, i find that in grinding levels, i am never really short of gold unless i purchase a high level, powerful ship which cost a ton.

Aim much higher with grape, if you are hitting the people on the open deck you dont even need to bring the side armor down. Even better, grape the ship from the rear. Even rate ships have pretty big weaknesses in the armor in the back and your grape shot will go down the length of the ship killing huge number of crew

demasting target (when you are using small ship) is sort of waste of time. Just blast his armor and grapeshot his crew, get his sails down below 70 to give yourself a bit of speed advantage (chainshot from the front or from the rear when crossing his course works much better than shooting from side) and then just push him against the wind ... sail alongside him and then start turning into him pushing his prow, he'll start to turn to evade and when he turns against the wind you'll be both going slow enough for boarding. It is a lot faster than demasting and it works on everything you can capture with early ships (except for Lynx, that thing is just too fast and maneuverable and can maneuver against the wind without problems, you'd have to demast that)
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
+sagand As you said yourself, Lynx's need demasting,, I de-masted a lynx in this video :p And you're right, generally, if i was capturing a ship, it'd be rare for me to try to de-mast, especailly against small ships like you say, however this was a tutorial and was designed to show people it can be done, and one of the ways in which to do it. However your method is certainly viable and its one of the reasons i love NA so much, there are multiple ways to approach and deal with any circumstance, whether you're fighting to sink or capture.

chain shot was to rip sails and break yard arms, bar shot was used to knock of masts.
@khateatingcactus
@khateatingcactus 2 жыл бұрын
Im pretty sure chain shot was efficient against masts because when the chain wraps around the mast the balls turn and smash simultaneously into it at such a velocity that would almost surely knock it down

can you capture a first rate using this
@khateatingcactus
@khateatingcactus 2 жыл бұрын
If you're using a smaller ship that is faster and more manoeuvrable, what you want to do is to stay behind the 1st rate at all times and fire broadsides into its stern, making the balls go lengthwise through the entire ship causing a lot of damage, when the HP is low you can start using grape shot to mow down the crew and then board it when it goes down a sufficient ammount

How do you like being a Pirate. How is the pirate to pirate community working out. Currently I'm really tempted to go over to the pirate side but I want to know more about it before I take the plunge.
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
+lexafied3d Pirates, are a little more chaotic than the brits, which is the only other faction i have experience with. But i do feel a little more free as a pirate, i can do whatever i want. As for the community, pirates have been working together alot lately to capture ports, so if you can get in with those guys organising those battles, its alot of fun, but you also have trolls, who attack everyone, since pirates can attack other pirates, but it hasnt been too bad so far. Like everything, it can be good or bad, really depends on your playstyle and preferences :)

Is it financially viable to capture a ship? I mean, can you sell it after you sent it to port? And how much would you earn from selling the small trader captured in the video? Thanks in advance!
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
Capturing traders is a great way to earn extra money over simply sinking them. As not only can you sell them in port, you can also sell any cargo they were carrying too. But bear in mind, you gain less XP from capturing atm to outright sinking so if you focus on capturing traders you will gain plenty money, but not much xp.
@mcbrite
@mcbrite 8 жыл бұрын
+AxeManAnt Thanks for that quick answer! Do you have a rough estimate on how much more gold you would make over sinking it? And maybe even how much XP you would sacrifice?
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
the gold and xp you make per ship kill or capture varies wildly from ship to ship and also depends on your ship. It also matter if you're attacking much bigger ships......If in some impossible scenario you managed to sink a 3rd rate whilst in the cutter, you would gain ungodly amounts of gold and xp. Way more than if you sunk it whilst in a 3rd rate yourself. It's this system that makes predicting gold and xp rewards really tricky as there isnt a concrete number that i can point to. However, an educated guess would be, that you'd probably earn half the XP, but half as much again in gold. However, if you were to focus on levelling for now and getting in a bigger, more poweful ship, engaging in large fleet battles, port battles, and grouping with others against larger fleets and vessels will probably earn you more than just capturing. So you can be flexible. Sorry i couldnt provide more concrete numbers.
@mcbrite
@mcbrite 8 жыл бұрын
+AxeManAnt No, that's great, thank you! So I should probably go for max XP anyway... I believe you mentioned in another video, that grinding missions is best for that? (Haven't bought the game yet, but definitely will, once I have a little more time... Maybe as soon as tonight/tomorrow)
@AxeManAnt
@AxeManAnt 8 жыл бұрын
to start off, yeah...grinding missions is the way to go....if you're frugal with your money then you'll find by the time youve ranked up a few times you'll have tons of it anyway....enough to move on to a nice ship anyway. Hope to see you in-game :)

+aryko1 Sounds like it was abit too damaged, even once captured, a ship still takes on water, and it's possible for them to be a lost cause, even if you win. Try not to damage the ship too much, and avoid hitting parts of it that are usually below the waterline. It's all experience though, and I was the same when i started, got a nice privateer capture, and was admiring it before ending the battle, and suddenly it sunk lol.
