This is so helpful!! I've been through this sheet a bunch, but never could put it all together with any degree of confidence. Thank you so much for the time and expertise.

Happy to help, let me know if you have any questions. I think the 375 GPS/Transponder is a steal, being able to avoid a separate GPS/Transponder/ADS-B setup with a single box!

great stuff! regarding RPM sensor - i have a Dual Electronic Ignition. what would i require ? as an optional sensor.. i am updating the avionics suite in my Carbon Cub. day VFR only
@BuildFlyGo

Depends on the electronic ignition. The pmags that I have provide tach over one of the pins on the connector which just goes directly to the garmin engine monitor.. Which model are you using?

Great video, thank you! If you have a GTN-650Xi, do you also need a GTR Com Radio when using with G3X? Also, does the GTN 650Xi come with an ADS-B in/out transponder built in or do you need to add the GTX-45R with an 'OUT' compliant GPS?
@BuildFlyGo
@BuildFlyGo 4 жыл бұрын
The GTR com is not required, it's just a second radio. The 650 is a NAV/COM/GPS, so does not include a transponder. You would still need a transponder that does ADS-B out, but it can use the GPS from the 650. So you still need to add a transponder but you don't need one with a built-in GPS.

@@BuildFlyGo Thank you for the video! Super helpful! About IFR Navigators, could you confirm I got it right? If I select the GTN650/750, then I don’t need the GDL50R (Datalink), GPS 20A (GPS/ADS-B) and GTR20 (comm radio), but would still need the GTX45R (Transponder). If I select the GPS175, then I wouldn’t need the GDL50R neither the GPS20A, but would still need the GTX45R (transp) and GTR20 (radio). If I get the GNX375 instead, then I can also drop the GTX45R (transp). The GNC355, on the other hand, would be the same as the GNX375, except that I would be trading the transponder by a radio/comm (would not need the GTR20 but would need the GTX45R). That would make the GNX375 essentially the same as GTN650/750 (NAV/COM/GPS), or would it require a Nav Com?

@@falexsimoes1 Let's break this up into a few parts. >If I select the GTN650/750, then I don’t need the GDL50R (Datalink), GPS 20A (GPS/ADS-B) and GTR20 (comm radio), but would still need the GTX45R (Transponder). Essentially yes. You would need a GDL51R if you want XM radio. But if you don't, then a GTN+GTX 45R is the simplest way to get 1 of everything else (GPS, nav, comm, transponder with ADSB "In"). >If I select the GPS175, then I wouldn’t need the GDL50R neither the GPS20A, but would still need the GTX45R (transp) and GTR20 (radio). Correct >If I get the GNX375 instead, then I can also drop the GTX45R (transp). Also correct. You would need a comm of some type, and a nav radio if so desired. >The GNC355, on the other hand, would be the same as the GNX375, except that I would be trading the transponder by a radio/comm (would not need the GTR20 but would need the GTX45R). Correct. You would have no nav radios at this point, but if you don't plan on flying ILS/VOR approaches, this is ok. >That would make the GNX375 essentially the same as GTN650/750 (NAV/COM/GPS), or would it require a Nav Com? GNX 375 would require a nav/comm to equal a GTN, but you also get a transponder out of it. A complete set-up of this would be GNX 375+GNC 255 (the TSO nav/comm radio). Alternatively you could trade the GNC 255 for a GTR 20 if you don't need a nav radio. In any scenario, you only need a GPS 20A if you have no other GPS units of any type. This is for the WAAS position source to the transponder. You only need a DL if you do not have an ADSB "In" Transponder AND you want the "In" capabilities. The only transponder in this video without "In" is the GTX 35R. So you would need a GDL 50R if you wanted "In" capabilities. Every other transponder in this video has ADSB "In," so the GDL 50R would not be required. You are not legally required to have "IN" capabilities, but they are certainly nice to have for traffic and subscription free wx. If you want Sirius XM, the DL's are the only way to get Sirius XM.

Great video. Amazing how many options are available. Now that you've flown with this set up, do you think it's necessary to have the second EFIS screen vs using an iPad? If G5 provides redundancy, I've wondered about the advantages of doing planning on an iPad, loading using Connext, and then in the air using it essentially as your MFD. Seems like a good way to save money and also benefit from Foreflight's constant upgrades. What would you miss out on by doing this?
@BuildFlyGo
@BuildFlyGo 3 жыл бұрын
So the main reason I have two screens is I fly "real" IFR at times and things can get busy quick. Having a backup that will look exactly the same as my primary is a good thing there. Can you do it with a G5? Absolutely! And I practice by failing everything but the G5 to make sure I can safely fly in the soup with "minimal" instrumentation. It's significantly more work though and I feel safer having the extra screen.
@BuildFlyGo

I'll add that I do have a tablet with Garmin Pilot with me in the plane for navigation in the case that both screen bite the dust. Backup on a backup on a backup. We all figure out what the risk/comfort balance is for each of us.

@@BuildFlyGo That makes good sense. I remember watching one of AOPA's accident case studies about a pilot who lost his vacuum in IMC and was trying to fly using the turn coordinator and VSI. It didn't end well. It's a great point, failing over to a screen that looks exactly the same makes things much easier and safer. Good food for thought. Thanks for the response!

I was originally going with a G3X touch in a certified aircraft with a GI275 backup and GNX375 and keeping my GNS480 and SL30m. I have a STEC 55x autopilot. So my problems started with the Garmin engineer telling me the 275 can’t talk to the G3x touch at all, then the limitation of the GAD29D that I would not be able to have both the 480 and the 375 as nav sources due to my having a non Garmin autopilot. So I changed course to the G500Txi that will work with the 275 and interface through the GAD43e to the STEC 55x. The other problem is I planned on using the GDL 52r for satellite weather and possible future satellite radio. The problem comes that with this setup the synthetic vision is no longer included, pay option, as well as almost everything adds unlock fees. Just wondering if the economics point to just upgrading the 55x to Garmin autopilot and go to a G5 instead of the 275. What’s your opinion? Thanks. Joel

The Garmin autopilot is excellent and I think once you try it out you'll decide it's worth the extra bucks. I bet someone near you has one you can try out? I feel that's really the main choice here that will dictate the other decisions.

Great video, really awesome. Questions: 1. Why have the GA 26C GPS antennas connected to the G3X and G5 if they have GPS built in? 2. For the GI 260, is there already an AoA indicator somewhere in the system, or did you simply decide you didn't want one? 3. How the heck do the pitot and static lines hook into this system?
@BuildFlyGo
@BuildFlyGo 3 жыл бұрын
1- the g3x doesn’t have a built-in antenna so it needs one. The g5 antenna is partially shaded by the airframe, so having one exposed on the “oh crap” instrument is a good idea :) 2- aoa shows up in the pfd. 3- I’ll post some pics to Facebook. The gsu is right next to the g5.

For what it's worth, at current prices, it's actually cheaper to get a GNC 355 + GNC 255A than a GTN 650Xi + GTR20. It saves ~$1800 and 4.2 pounds. (Assuming min advertised pricing is the price you pay, of course.) You also add a bit of redundancy too; your IFR capable nav sources are no longer in the same box.
@BuildFlyGo

Yup, agreed. Assuming you are paying list, etc. I think we will see the 650xi start to pull ahead on functionality with the next few firmware upgrades taking advantage of the new hardware.
