Or imagine the USS Missouri or the Bismarck in those times, sure the modern navy today has a lot of powerful weapons but nothing beats the those old 18 inch naval artillery guns
@ScienceRules118
@ScienceRules118 4 жыл бұрын
@@rebelpebbles5026 16 and 15 inch respectively, actually - the only 18" guns ever put to see that I can recall were old monitors (basically the smallest possible hull with the biggest possible gun, used for coastal defense against actual battleships), HMS Furious (a Courageous-class battlecruiser, which was armed with 2 18" guns instead of the class' normal 15" guns), and the Yamato-class battleships Yamato and Musashi (which were technically armed with 18.1" guns). USS Missouri, as an Iowa-class battleship, is armed with 9 16"/50 Mark 7 guns (the /50 indicates that the barrel is 50 times 16" long. It's what's known as "caliber" in naval parlance. That works for any naval gun, actually - multiply the number behind the / by the bore diameter to figure out how many [insert bore diameter unit here]s the barrel is long), which are not 18" in bore diameter. The Bismarck-class battleships, Bismarck herself included, were armed with 8 38cm/52 guns, which, again, were not 18" in bore diameter.

+MarcellusTheGreen I believe when the breech opens, the pressure difference causes any remaining fumes to expel from the barrel which help keep the turret air fresh in a way. Kind of similar to bore evacuators on tanks. Don't take me on that though since this is a conclusion I came to from couple different things.
@kurtiskaskowski5386
@kurtiskaskowski5386 8 жыл бұрын
+Neurofied Yamato no, I believe it's a puff of air they blow into the barrel before the breach is opened to clear any debris. The Mark 7 16 inch guns had a system that blew a big puff of Nitrogen into the barrel before the breach was opened, to clear any remaining burning debris from the silk powder bags
@neurofiedyamato8763
@neurofiedyamato8763 8 жыл бұрын
Kurtis Kaskowski That's pretty similar to what I said except the method used, it still is expelling gas+debris. The only difference is that I used a bore evacuators as the basis on how it works. So the exact method is probably wrong but it's purpose is the same. BTW, this gun doesn't use silk bags, so it's probably just to blow out any residue from the propellant which there shouldn't be much with modern explosives. I still do think it's the toxic fumes that it is expelling.

do these shells get picked up when they fell into the water? or they just leave it there and it sinks to become a coral for marine life

I notice there's water leaking from the turrent does that mean it has its own tank of water to cool the barrel or does it use saltwater?

You’d think they’d have a metal basket underneath to catch the used shells ridiculous to think how much waste is being dumped in the oceans

No storage space on board, no recycling/reloading program ashore wants them or exists, and no GM will want them in the magazine taking up space/creating clutter they have to work around. it's also against regulations for us to put the spent casings back in the magazine. The bos'uns on the other hand... may ask us to keep some nice ones (not to dinged up) to make quarterdeck stuff.

spikedpsycho honestly, the biggest advancement would be to not carry all the powder needed for conventional guns. If railguns eliminate that, that would be huge.

The bosenmates never liked when we had a gun shoot. They had to paint the deck after. The powder case would chip a cresent shape in the deck paint LOL.

What most people don’t know is the MK75 (my baby) is a fail fire gun. So if something goes wrong it will still get that last round down range.

Yeap, loved that, and Chief was always paranoid about it. Oh look the cutouts are f'd up... well there went the CIWS and stacks..thats got to suck..or the firing pin broke, or the recoil system f'd up... it's going to shoot... not for long, but it will shoot.
