I'm not as extreme as Jocko, but I am usually up at 6am. Then its immediately into 30 min of HIIT, followed by 30 min of personal / quiet time. The key is not the extreme early start, it's the discipline of the routine that gets your day started, allows you time for yourself, before the rest of the world is awake.

Up at about 0430 and then bed at say 2300 (if he sleeps at the gym). That's 5 and a half hours sleep. Less than 7 to 8 hours sleep a day WILL reduce your immune system. If you want to be getting up at 0430, you need to be asleep by 2100.
@Limeonal2 жыл бұрын
Immune system is one thing, getting that little sleep consistently has been proven to have many negative side effects.
@johnc10145 ай бұрын
See, for me the discipline part is getting to bed early enough. My bedtime is 7:15pm, so that I can get up at 3am. I love getting up this early. I wake up and want to get out the door because I can go to the gym. I have almost zero traffic, very few people are there (0 to 3 others), and I have my time to myself. I'd wake up earlier if I could, but that takes too much time out of the evening. Also, 7-8 hours of sleep is vital. 1) this is why I don't feel tired at 3am. I've easily grown accustomed to this. 2) lack of quality sleep will really take a toll later on. If you want to die at an earlier age and have a range of health issues, go ahead and get less sleep consistently.

Well, it might sound funny, but I really feel myself more tired, if I sleep 8 hours. I wake up at 4-5 am, feeling fresh, and if I'm like "I dunno what to do, I should go sleep back", then I'll feel myself not that good.
@Argonnosi5 жыл бұрын
@@uilmandala8609 Part of that is recovery. Getting less sleep than you need is like lifting weights or doing hill sprints. Your body gets tired and needs to recover. But, it's good at ignoring it as long as you keep pushing. That moment when you sit down (or, in this case, lie down for more than four hours), your body moves into recovery and it does not want you going anywhere. Sleep for 7 to 8 hours a night every night for a month and you will be changed forever.

sleep is not about how long you sleep its about how effectivly you sleep. while sleeping you are not actualy recovering 100% of the times. som people actualy have a rare condition that makes them recover 100% of the time they sleep so they get away with 3-4hours no problem sleep. abusing sleeping meds can allso effect your bodys way of resting. iv had periods of my life where i could only sleep for 2-2,5hours per night while wakeing upp every 20-30min but still be able to go about my day working out,playing video games and going to work. i allso had this one week where me and my friends did amfetamin and ADHD medicin for 8days straight. no sleep minmal food like i ate maby 1skittles bag of candy during that time.and tons of water and drugs and then i whent to work and worked (you do feel exhausted in your body but you still have energy from the drug to push on) the thing is the human body adapts to what it needs to do

New research suggests that lack of sleep allows the brain to develop Alzheimers. Both Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher boosted that slept 6 hours a day, then they both suffered from the same brain disease. Also training 3 hours before bedtime increase your core body temperature, that also interferes with the quality of one's sleep. Going off the research, Casey is sadly leaving himself short in later life just to be productive today. Time will tell.

I used to be the closing supervisor at work, getting off at 10pm, staying up til 3am. Then I switched to the morning shift, which STARTED at 4am, so my alarm was going off at 3am. I learned to love it. Got promoted and don't have to come in til 7am usually now, but I still wake up early just to have that quiet chill time before going in.

But he is not sleep deprived, he goes to bed at 11pm and wakes up at 5 that's solid 6hrs of sleep which is perfect for an adult 28+ 🤷🏻♀️ it's just that he goes to bed early
@pontusoskarsson59985 жыл бұрын
+vinniesmyyth. I can agree with the idea that the early hours are the most productive for some, for others it's the late hours. No matter when you decide to sleep, you should try to get your 8 hours. Casey is getting what now? 5.5 hours between 11 pm and 4:30 am? In the video they try to make it sound like discipline creates more time, and to a certain degree it probably does, but at the end of the day Casey is still sleeping 2.5 hours less than he should, which is proven "HORRENDOUS FOR YOUR HEALTH!" to quote Awesomeness Hippopotamus. The problem is that they're making it sound like it's a positive and healthy thing to skip sleep.
@mrtnmch5 жыл бұрын
No, 6 hours is NOT enough (read Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker). The thing is - the lack of sleep affects you (and your performance) even though you don't realise it. It's like when you're drunk - you think you're not nearly as drunk as you really are. Get 7-9 hours. And yes, that 1 hour makes a difference.

I might not be the first to say this, but I absolutely needed this video. I get up at 9am and think I've done well... after doing exactly what Jocko said; turning over and embracing a little more sleep. I do have the 'excuse' that I'm a night shift worker. But that's what that is; an excuse. Now, I see exactly where it goes wrong. My day, every day, starts of on the wrong side of productivity. GET UP. WIN.

You make a good point though, besides the humor. The world does seem to be getting faster and faster and we're all trying to pack more stuff into our lives. I think I heard that a fairly large percentage of people in Japan have been dropping dead from exhaustion, due to over working. Productivity is great, but maybe we're too focused on that and not enough on taking it easy and "smelling the roses" so to speak. I guess I'm trying to say that most of us, or at least myself, should be striving for balance in life.

getting 5 hours of sleep (11pm-4am) is proven to damage your brain across the board. Your chances of getting Alzheimer's disease, regressing long and short term memory, and congestive heart failure all go up. Don't believe me? do some true and honest research yourself. I agree that more time in the morning is so helpful, and coffee definitely makes you forget that you are lacking sleep. I wish we all had a few extra hours in the day. But it simply is not healthy. Especially for those with brains still growing. If you are under the age of 25, your brain is most likely still growing. around 8 -9 hours of sleep is needed for those with growing brains, and 6-8 for those brain is not growing. Like I said, do your own research.

A new study has discovered that when people sleep, special lymph channels in the brain called the “glymphatic system” actually open up and drain dangerous neurotoxins from the brain into the cerebral spinal fluid. (1-4) The study suggested it takes about 6-8 hours of sleep to complete the brain drain plumbing process, which is compelling evidence that getting the correct amount of sleep matters. ---- various tumours are more likely to occur for example if those toxins are not released

"Maybe it's not my fault, but what can I do about it?" This is perhaps the most powerful line I've heard in my life. I was constantly abused through out my adolescence, and I sometimes drown in my memories to the point I can't even function well for simple daily tasks. I never knew an answer for my anger and rage, until I heard him say "Maybe it's not my fault, but what can I do about it?" It's indeed not my fault that my parents are both shit, but feeling sorry for oneself is the most useless thing you can do for yourself. It's time for me to ask myself, "What can I do about this situation?"
