If you’re a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO), you have what it takes to lead. Maintain and operate the most advanced fleet of ships in the world-along with the crews that man them. Your enlisted Sailors will look to you for guidance, so you’ll need to become an expert on everything from engineering to combat systems to navigation. Communicate your mission and goals with your crew to ensure everything is smooth sailing. If you see yourself commanding a Naval ship as a Captain one day, this is the role that will get you there. @@phantomwriter2629 Your degree is less important than your GPA and OAR (Officer Aptitude Rating). Calc and physics are a must to do well, but there are prep courses to support. About half of all that apply to SWO are accepted. SWO LIFE!

I'm a proud ESWS Ret. Sailor and I remember as a young Sailor many years ago, I was trained by an Excellent SWO (LTjg Outler). He really taught me on how to be a better Sailor in standing watch (e.g., Helmsman, Lee Helmsman, Messenger of the Watch, Lookout, etc.). Thank you for SWO's 😇🇺🇸🇬🇧

Retired SWO here. 89-09. It is probably much different now but back in the early days of my career we had a philosophy: the job wasn't done right unless we made it painful and difficult to do. Ha ha! It was hilarious that this was verified from others at Dept Head school. SWOs ate there young, weeded out the perceived weak... it was a tough culture.

I always wondered why SWOs do everything. In other western navies (UK, Canada, Australia, ect) Maritime Warfare Officer, Weapons Systems Engineering Officer, and Marine Engineering Officer are three separate officer career tracks, but in the US Navy it's all combined into one. Seems a bit weird.

Every Officer position is an application process. The Community you apply to will either recommend you, or they won't. An Officer Recruiter will help you understand the application process and navigate the hurdles to become, and remain, competitive. The only easy day was yesterday; if you've got what it takes, step up.

It is a conversation piece between you and your Detailer. A Detailer is a representative each Naval Officer has that helps negotiate orders and achieve career milestones to remain competitive in your respective fields. In the SWO world, your 'dream sheet' will tell the Navy what your goals are - job, location, class, etc. The Navy, via your Detailer, will discuss how your goals will align with available opportunities and set you up for success. Be advised, the Navy will will always get a 51% vote, we are still a business with national interests in mind. But your goals, both now and later, are a driving factor in the conversation. As you gain seniority, so too will you gain bargaining power; more jobs will become available and your record and successes will make your conversations more heavily weighted and you'll be competitive for jobs you'd like. I know a SWO working for the President of the United States; the only force stopping you - is you.

@connorbell8542
@connorbell8542 5 жыл бұрын
Blakely Yes that’s one way to do it. After you get your degree you go to OCS to become an officer. I think it also helps that you have an engineering degree though it’s not required. Just talk to an officer recruiter and they’ll put you on track to go to the selection board for SWO!

@americasnavy
@americasnavy 3 жыл бұрын
A degree from a four-year college or university is a minimum educational requirement to become a Commissioned Officer. There are different ways to become a SWO. If you're a high school student or an undergraduate, you can enter through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) or through the U.S. Naval Academy. Those already having a degree attend Officer Candidate School (OCS), a 12-week Navy school in Newport, RI.

@joecottone7556
@joecottone7556 4 жыл бұрын
@@timobrien5141 it certainly helps. The Navy puts an emphasis on Engineering for midshipmen to study. So choices like Electrical, Ocean, Aerospace, Computer Sci etc. Is (normally) what you should shoot for but I was Political Science myself, and was able to pick up SWO no problem. Like I said, its a very in demand job and if you meet the criteria for NROTC you shouldn't have a problem picking it up

@Josef Baumann Your sea tours are when you are attached to a 'sea going' command; but your tours rotate between 'sea going' and 'shore tours'. A SWO will rotate between the two based on how they want to drive their careers and to meet certain requirements.

@@johnpennacchio1176 one thing I never understood is why join the Navy, Coast Guard and to a small degree, the Marine Corps if you don't want to go to sea? I thought if you join either of those branches you will go to sea for at least one tour
@MightySapphire
@MightySapphire 2 жыл бұрын
@@chrismc410 Not everyone in the Navy is stationed on ships, just like not everyone in the Air Force flies planes. There are intelligence officers, logistics officers, space cadre, engineering duty officers, HR officers, meteorologist officers, etc. and while there is a chance you might be stationed on a ship, many of these supporting duties are conducted elsewhere.
