EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE: Just a few years ago it was illegal to film government ministries in Myanmar’s bizarre secretive capital, Naypyidaw. Recently, those rules were loosened but aerial photography falls into a grey area. Before things change we took to the skies over Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (The Assembly of the Union) to see what the vast capital complex looks like from a bird’s eye view in this exclusive footage.

Hey, Naypyidaw is where I live and work! I'm a teacher at the international school. I used to teach in Yangon and Mandalay, but both of those cities are polluted (too much traffic) and overcrowded. Naypyidaw is definitely different, but its a great place to live if you like the quiet life. I can ride my bicycle with no dangers from the cars - 'cos there aren't many! Naypyidaw may have originally been built for the government and military, but now many Myanmar people are making the move from overcrowded Yangon to come and live in the clean air and wide open spaces of Naypyidaw.

Simon Luttrell ...I agree that originally that city was probably built for govt. and military...and maybe to have it empty in waiting, is raising too many concerns, opinions..cospiracy theories..u know..so lets occupy it until further notice...all in all it is beautiful in its untouched state...and it would be amazing to live there!!

Waste of money! Burma has dire need of money to revitalize in many industries yet the shitty military government spent billions in building this ghost city. Pyinmana is quite fertile to my knowledge. Whey can't they change that huge area to mechanized farming land if the government has full control over the area and the budget ? That would make lots of money for the state coffer. Yet, those damned assholes made huge residential area where no body want to live.

Just my opinion. I am free to show it. We have no choice but to bear the tyranny. +The junta has left us a huge DEBT and a completely corrupt bureaucracy. I am not blaming the army. I do not hate the army at all. Our poor soldiers had to fight with limited rations, weak weapons, ammo, remuneration in a real civil war while dumb ass leadership was enriching their family and cronies in the cities by stealing from the state. If they lose their arms and legs, they received no support thus had to beg for food on the streets and sleep on the streets. Strong and disciplined military is necessary in Burma. We are surrounded by powerful countries after all and pacifism would not work. I am only criticizing the previous leadership (60 years of dictatorship). You see, it took a decade to corrupt the teacher and education staffs, about 15 years to corrupt the law courts. Since it is 60 years, everything is corrupt. We don't even need to doubt that.

James Wai Phyo Hain Hi bro, What we missed is that a dictatorship or a military is constituted by its own citizens. You said 60 years of wrong management and military dictatorship took our country to be poor. Who exactly was it? U Nay Win? U Than Shwe? Are you sure our country will be richer if Aung San Suu Kyi lead 40 years ago? Are you really sure about that? In my opinion, I strong believe that the condition of a country is also depend on its citizens' moral, ethics, way of thinking and customs. Some burmese way of thinking and customs are not supportive for the economically development and peace harmony. What we have to change is in the people too I believe.

for example, about NPT, having a capital city in the middle of the country is not so bad idea bro, it is just my view. The city is built by military, yes, and I know that there are mismanagement and waste of money some where. But it also brings good things that it can host major international events like sea games and world wide forums. The security of major international delegates from foreign countries is guaranteed. In yangon, crimes possibility is higher. And, many countries has its administrative capitals if you look around. I know there is waste of money but the city is there. You have to proud that it is built by the burmese. The military is still burmese bro. Just look at the parliamentary complex. Every foreigner who saw the parliament is amazed. Like, burmese could build this! So you have to proud and NPT is our city too, just like yangon.

Brasilia was built because of the same fear: Brazil's capital was Rio, and since Emperor Pedro II, the government feared invasions from hostile nations. Building an inland capital was supposed to provide safety. Needless to say Brazil hasn't been in any war in the last 150 years. So it was kinda a waste of money lol

Quite a few capital cities in the world are soulless and kind of unnatural. Canberra, Brasilia, Ankara, Riyadh, Pretoria, to name just a few. Although most are not as empty as this.

The Capital city of Myanmar Naypidaw needs a lot of Foreign Investments and can build Tall Buildings that CAN ALMOST Rival the Myanmar's largest City Yangon and even Thailand Capital Bangkok too if the Government is willing to open up to Foreigners.

Myanmar’s plan to build a new capital is a lot like Brazil when it moved its capital away from Rio and built a new city from scratch in a more centralized geographic position back in the 50s. Though being a massive white elephant, it actually paid off eventually. Rio is a very important city on itself and it’s better to have the federal government offices and headquarters based somewhere else, besides the new city was an important key to stimulate development and investment further north/inland since Brazil is very demographically unbalanced throughout its region - most people here live on the coast or a few hours drive from the coast. But Brasília well planned though, I don’t know about Naypyidaw.

Just an idea: if the city is completely unused, why couldn't a part of the migrants currently ending up in camps in/near Europe be transferred in Naypidaw? Would it be to far away or too expensive? Still, less expensive than keeping the city in good condition and some migrants could live in peace.. Or am i wrong?
@vin2200
@vin2200 8 жыл бұрын
There are many reasons why that this is a terrible idea. Although it would provide the migrants with extravagant living spaces, where would they get food, clothes, and in general basic necessities? The place is deserted and there are no local schools, hospitals, and I think you get the idea. Even if they were to set up these places, it would take years. So I know its just an idea but uhhh this should stay as an idea :)

Because there are plenty of displaced Burmese people already. The Rohingya from Rakhine State have had to flee from Myanmar to Bangladesh already because of persecution from the Burmese armies, so I can't really see them having much patience for other Muslim refugees. Just because Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace prize, does not mean her country should be held as the example for a peace-loving nation. Since this crisis, that prize of hers has become irrelevant. So whilst the sentiment of what you're saying is fantastic, it is simply a non-sensical idea unfortunately. I do also appreciate that I'm responding to you a year later and a lot has happened in Burma since then

It's cleaner but hotter and less greener than yangon. It just doesn't have that city atmosphere yangon has, more like an empty countryside but with less trees. That's why only ppl working for the government live there, and even they return to yangon every weekend. I hope the population grows and become more fun in the future though. It does have potential.
