No it was not compulsory. There was only a kind of peer pressure and the will to be with his friends instead to go to the school on Sundays. Many also simply loved the Hitler Youth and were indoctrinated. Only in the war years it was obligatory as far as I can remember.

At 10, boys were initiated into the Jungvolk (Young People), and at 14 they were promoted to the Hitler Youth. Although membership in the Hitler Youth was compulsory, many young people were eager to join in of their own free will, to be part of a group. You're right about that. Being forcibly conscripted in the later part of WW2 was part of the Volkssturm "The People's Storm". It was a mass militia established by Nazi Germany on the orders of Adolf Hitler on Sept. 24th, 1944. It was staffed by conscripting males between the ages of 16-60. I think that was the compulsory part you were referring to. I've seen pictures of some Hitler Youth, riding into battle on a bicycle, with Panzerfausts strapped to the bike. And some of the Volkssturm conscriptees looked old enough to be grandfathers (they probably were) P.S. My maternal grandfather was in his mid 30s when he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in the early 1940s, where he was a Payroll Master. In civilian life, he was a regional manager for a major insurance company.

Are you sure about that? There were Allied bombing raids on Germany, and many people who died were buried in their own yards next to their ruined homes. There were informers everywhere, ready to tattle on you to the local Nazi office. Toward the end, many people starved to death in spite of a rationing system, and many young children were sent out with weapons to defend Germany against the allies. I've seen pictures of boys riding into battle on bicycles, with Panzerfausts clipped to their bikes. My mother was born in Wiesbaden and was still a baby when WW2 started in Europe. She remembers the bombing raids and having only seconds to get to the basement. She remembers being cold, hungry and scared all the time. She remembers her father coming home on leave, and she wondered if she would ever see him again. Oma would listen to the BBC (which was verboten) to find out the latest news and when the next bombing raids were scheduled. If she had been caught, she most likely would have been executed, never mind that she had 3 little daughters and her husband was fighting for the Fatherland. By the end of the war, Wiesbaden was in the American sector, not the Soviet sector, which was a blessing.
