Larry Bird HATED to lose. He would do anything within the rules to win. During games it was as much fun to watch him off the ball to see how he was thinking and anticipating what the other team was going to do. He had a lot of steals that way. He was always a couple of moves ahead of the competition. Larry said once, “I knew I was good because I put in the time.” He was a workaholic with a killer instinct. The only other player I’ve seen with such a killer competitive instinct is Michael Jordan. What a fun era the NBA was in the 1980’s & ‘90’s.

@@jonstefanik9400 … Another great NBA rivalry I can recall from the late 80’s & early 90’s was the Bulls vs Pistons, around the time the Pistons were referred to as the bad boys of the NBA. Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen led the Bulls into war against the Pistons & it was awesome to watch. I guess it’s like they say:…”What happens on the court STAYS on the court” ☝️😄🏀

@@jonstefanik9400 … It was around the time of my very first visit to the US in 1988 (I’m from Australia) at the age of 20 when I got taken to my very first Pistons / Bulls game in Michigan. The Pistons had guys like Isaiah Thomas, Vinnie Johnson, Bill Laimbeer, Joe Dumars etc running wild & going to town on their opponents, much to their disgust & that of the fans. Then, the Bulls had a “certain” player who would often leave them choking in his dust by the name of Michael Jordan. I wasn’t much of a basketball fan before that but seeing that kind of action up close got me hooked 🏀🏀🏀

The battles between Indiana state and Wichita state are legendary. I am from Wichita and back then most games were not on tv and so we would listen to the games on the radio with Gus Grebbe... He was the best commentator of all time.. He would say the Shockers have it in the 'old deep freeze'.... Bird fought against Cliff Levingston, Antoine Carr, Greg Dreiling, and Xavier McDaniel.. all of Wichita State and all who went to play in the NBA... man.,... those were the days.,.. huh Rick?

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, Larry's game reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, track & Field, soccer, poker, & strategic chess in his head, and that's what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched!

I used to play pick-up games in Philly but, I never played for a team cause I moved a lot. I did see Dr J. ,Charles Barkley, Darrell "the dunk" Dawkins, Andrew Tony in the 80s (76ers) at The Spectrum and, that's as far back as I go as a spectator but, man! I watched a ESPN thing that was about an hour having to do with Larry and I had no idea how great that brother was. Same with Magic...you gotta track down the old footage of some of these guys we see as former players/celebrity commentators. MJ is still the Goat but, after that...the question of who's the 2nd best ever? Larry has to be a huge part of that conversation (or argument right 😂)!! Nice goin' brother Jamal for doing what was necessary for this to work out. Loved it man!✌️❤️🎸🎶🙏

You're probably too young to remember, Jamel...but that was my time of basketball awakening....I had just finished HS when I began watching the Lakers....it was Magic's 3rd season (1981-'82)......it was the decade of Bird with his Celtics and Magic with his Lakers.....and their rivalry.......those two guys saved the NBA and made it what it is today! Oh, the memories!

This is the era of basketball that I grew up watching and like I said in the test upload Larry Bird did something that Jordan, Magic, Kobe, Kareem, Luca, LeBron, D Wade, and thousands of other NBA players, except 2, Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlin, haven't done and that is to win 3 NBA MVP awards in a row. Today's NBA is weak IMHO compared to this era. Bird's career stats were 24 ppg, 10 rpg and 6 apg 🏀✌️

To leave Pete Maravich off that list is criminal! Go look at the man's stats and even Bill Walton said that with today's 3 point line that Maravich would average over 50 points a game if he played today! Back in his day he usually averaged only in the 30's.

West.. and Bird got injured early he wasn't as slow as ppl think early in his career by no means fast but not slow.... anyway for me the hardest to compare and the big men.. so many greats.... put them where you want and I won't argue....

Don’t fall into the trap that Bird was slow, couldn’t jump, and was un-athletic. It’s was guarded by some of the best defensive players in history( Cooper, Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, etc). Same vertical as Karl Malone. In his prime he was plenty athletic. Not Jordan, Wilkins, Or Drexler athletic but who the hell is. This is just a lot of he’s white and 6’9” so he looks slow talk. 10 reb per game avg for his career. You can’t do that without being at least avg athleticism.

The thing about Larry Bird, when people always try to compare his stats with players today, is that Larry Bird played at a time where the game was extremely physical. Today, you can hardly touch each other without getting in trouble. As Michael Cooper said, it's not about the numbers. It's about being able to produce that game winning shot in the last couple of seconds of the game and in that discipline, nobody has ever matched Larry Bird. The 3-point shot was just another weapon in Larry Bird's arsenal. Many people, who never lived through the 1980s, may disagree but basket ball was more entertaining in the 1980s than it ever was before and since.
