I disagree. I think he cared ALOT what people thought of him. He just didn't know how to deal with it and acted out. He cried when he was voted DPoY. He cried when he was inducted into the HoF. Being acknowledged, by his peers, for his accomplishments mattered.

I get the same impression from Rodman that he does care. In a way he seems like an inverted person, kept to himself and had his own circle of friends that he felt comfortable around. There's a lot going on with that guy trying to find an identity. I think when his sister's would dress him up as a girl when he was young sent him on a somewhat twisted trajectory.

Man the NBA was so much fun back in the 1990s. The 80s through the late 90s were the golden days of the League. The talent was just outrageous and the game was so pure. Rodman was a joy to watch. Met/came across him once. (I grew up in Michigan, was a hardcore Pistons/Rodman fan)Was during Detroit era, pre tattoos etc. We were at an amusement park, and at some point I overheard that he was there(also heard vanilla ice was there but never seen that lol) Eventually we see a huge crowd of people walking towards us. With a really tall skinny shirtless guy in the front middle, which was clearly Dennis and everyone was following him. It was like slow motion, he was leading, everyone behind him, a swarm of admirers all trying to talk to him, but he was just walking forward, alone, w a slight smile on his face enjoying his day as if he were by himself. When I saw it was him I'd run to a lamp post close by and leaned against it, I was just in awe, I couldn't believe I was looking at a real life superhero (to me), I stared w an astonished look on my face, and as Dennis moved closer he looked right at me for a few seconds, as if to let me know that he saw me, he saw that I was having a moment, I was seeing a hero. I was too frozen to do anything but stare, but at least I have the memory.

"Anytime I see Scottie or Michael shoot from the top of the key, I know the ball will come off the rim to the right," he says, referring to teammates Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan. "Watch this." He fast-forwards the tape until Pippen appears on the big-screen TV, shooting a three-pointer from the top of the key. While the shot is in the air, other players wrestle for position under the basket as Rodman slides into an open space to the right of the hoop. The shot caroms hard toward the right corner, just as he anticipated, and he is the only one in position to chase the ball down. He fast-forwards again, first to another Pippen miss from the top of the key and then to a Jordan miss from the same spot. Both times the ball bounces off to the right, and both times Rodman-who has spent hours observing the arc of their shots-is in position for an uncontested rebound. He looks away from the television, raises his eyebrows, and says, "See?"

you are wrong. that is just sport. do you realize how other fields party and also work hard? there is no effing bigger and ruthless field than finance and america is the top of the chart. money never sleeps and you close a lid you would have lost a bil or made a bil. so dennis turning up a game after banging 15 hookers( which magic did by the way) and having some tequila shots is no big deal( chamberlin had that routine). all the nba players will land up in hospital if they did like coders( yankee is the most notorious). 25 cups of tea and coffee beat that( you will land in emergency). but i have more respect for surgeons( heart surgery sometimes happen for 3 days and people dont sleep and docs are known to take the pills to keep you awake. it is banned in other countries and in usa you can get them). though it is not the most brutal field( tech and art are the worst), they are saving lives. during pandemic they have burste their balls to no avail( pushing 120 hours and have to worry about their own saftey) cocaine keeps you awake for days. none of these guys will make it till 100. so they borrowed a decade or half of life to work hard and play hard during their peak. these guys are tall and big adn they have more health issues than regular people. so there is no given or taken. you party today pay tomorrow and vice versa. so in the end it evens out. get it?

@kookurikapooh

To be fair, back then they allowed the defense to get away with commiting more fouls against the offensive player. Now, they allow the offense to get away with more "illegal" moves like lifting, travel, etc... while also being hella strict when calling fouls by the defense against the offensive players. So in short: It's easier to defend back then but harder to score. Now, it's harder to defend but easier to score.

@@nicksandz3209 But nonetheless, regardless of era, there are those that do it right and at an elite level regardless of ref era bias. I do still believe players like Jordan, Pip, Rodman, and maybe even Stockton, can still do well on defense in today's era. Sure, they wont "impose their will" as much as they did in their era, but that's just how much skilled they are. They'd still be quite effective, although with adjustments to their game and effeciency. Similarly, guys like MVP Rose, Curry and Kyrie could still run circles around guys from the old era--of course, with a few adjustments as well to their level of efficiency.

Not necessarily their destructive offense. I understand your points on the subject and respect your opinion what bill russel did is amazing. In my own opinion I don't put much stock in the amount of rings someone has as a end all and be all. Rodman was the man. With the way the NBA is today, he'd probably be in jail for assault for playing defense. (Defense is not allowed in the modern NBA). P.s An average NBA game is literally a three point contest with some layup drills in between (they'll call some fouls to keep the game close and make sure the stars get their stats. The ideal situation is getting the game to a last second shot)

That's exactly right. Defense is half the game. Mark Aguirre averaged over 25 ppg in Dallas and was one of the top scorers in the league as was Adrian Dantley. Aguirre benched himself in Detroit because he knew how special Rodman was. The guy was well past his prime with the Bulls, in his mid 30's, and was still BY FAR the best rebounder and defender in the league. In many ways he was a smaller Bill Russell. Russ was better at controlling the paint and help defending in the half-court but Rodman could guard all 5 positions at an elite level and also was a dominant transition defender with his speed and motor.
