Its a true problem, the league has to do something. At the very least, make refs have pressers answering for their calls so their is some sense of accountability. Also, having a criteria for technicals instead of giving refs individual leeway would be nice. Calling technicals for emotional reasons shouldnt be allowed whatsoever.

What? You know that in the rest of the world Sport betting has been legal forever, right? Like how do you think sports work in other countries that have always had betting? Not to mention, I've been betting on NBA games for decades in the UK, why would it make any difference now that its legal in the US, in addition to the rest of the world?
@PeterParker-rk4fe

@@bipolarminddroppings It’s still a relatively new thing here in the US, that’s what I’m referring too. I think the temptation of making bets on games that they the referees are officiating themselves are too strong. it’d be hard turning away from doing something like this when there’s so much money that could be made. especially when you have that much power to influence the outcomes of games. I mean just look at Tim Donaghy, and that was before sports betting was legal in the US. The guy probably made a fortune before getting caught. But that’s just my theory 😉

I don't think they care until people stop watching. I believe the only way it would change at this point is if there was a mass exodus of fans at arenas and watching on TV following a tweet from a popular person with video evidence saying "boycott the NBA." If the arenas weren't full and the TV viewership was down like 50% they'd have to address it and cut the shit out. Aside from that, it's already so obvious. They don't care. Every Lakers game I've watched since that missed call on Tatum vs LeBron, they've gotten some favorable whistles. I seem to remember a game against the Suns where they shot like 50 fts.

How to fix this: 1.- Refs need to start getting punished for irrational calls 2.- If a team use challenge and they were right and it's successful, the challenge should be refunded in case they need to challenge another call in the same game. 3.- If a team use challenge and they were wrong and it's unsuccessful, they lose the ability to call for challenges for the rest of the game, that way they don't just challenge every call and the pace of the game is not affected.

I agree on if you initially challenge a call and win, you retain timeout and challenge. If you challenge later on and win/loss you still lose the timeout, and lose the ability to challenge again that game. This gives more incentive for coaches to challenge egregious calls early in the game to maybe give the refs some belly aching earlier on.

I don't like this system because ultimately "challenges" are meant to correct refs mistakes, and it shouldn't be on the team to perfectly referee better than referees. We allow referees countless mistakes that cost entire games so why punish a team for a single referee correction? The system for losing your challenge is already hard enough, I only agree that people who challenge successfully should be able to keep challenging successfully that way you completely negate corrupt referees.

Honestly, as an NBA fan, you see bad calls, soft calls, crazy no calls, and for the most part, you just forget about them after you’re done venting. Whether that’s to yourself, to the TV, the person next to you, or in a lot of cases both, but when you see this many across the league within such a short time period, even if it’s from one season to the next separated by just a season or two it really has me scratching my head, like wtf. The NBA needs to do something about this ASAP, and it’s absolute trash that fans can get screwed over this badly spending their hard earned money to be at a game, or even be able to just watch their favorite player by paying for some subscription. I literally am subscribed to multiple services just to be able to watch different NBA games, and it’s frustrating as it is for me which I’m sure is the case for other people as well when you’re only spending that money for the sole purpose of watching your team, or in some cases a player, can you imagine a kids Christmas present or birthday present being courtside seats just to see their favorite player get injected for clapping in the first quarter, it’s a complete joke, in the NBA is totally wrong, speaking to you, Mr. Silver, there should be full transparency, I want to know what actions are being done to the person who ruined the game for so many, there’s no reason why teams, players, management, coaching, ownership should have so much transparency, whether they like it or not when it comes to that franchise, but when it comes to actual NBA employees i.e., the referees, we don’t know their punishment, nah, that’s not cool at all imo. Also, I don’t think it’s crazy for the NBA to have random lie detector tests conducted on referees on a regular basis, especially in cases where there is questionable, intent, because I’ll be damned that I’m losing hundreds of dollars in a parlay because you didn’t like the way a player passed you the ball and now this 30 points per game. Average player is leaving the game with five points before the game has even started. Tell me I’m wrong! And thank you very much for this video! 🙏🙏🙏 !

In terms of what all you said, I’ll agree with you on a majority of it. But I want to push back on a couple things… first, that last video at the end.. that’s not a foul. In fact, it’s an offensive foul if we were to call it by the book (which the NBA never does). But I do see what you mean… it’s been called this way throughout the season and you want consistency. Absolutely agree with you! Second, the majority (and I mean over 80%) of the NBA players feel they need to have a conversation with the referees the whole game… if you were trying to call the game and counsel the players for 48+ minutes every game, you would grow a little frustrated. Some of these “referees lost their minds” moments are moments of frustration being released. They are critically assessed, instant replay video review is there to inform them that they are wrong over half the time, and some players want to talk/complain to them more than they want to play the game. Two easy examples are Draymond Green and Luka Doncic. Finally, these referees are trained to basically get bullied every night. Should they be better… absolutely! In my opinion, today’s refereeing is the worst it has ever been… but I also believe that the complaining is at the highest it has ever been. There has not been one player this year that has played perfect, yet they want the referees to be “flawless”. If a referee sent an entire season with 100% accuracy of their calls, I guarantee you that they would still be criticized/bullied by players. Referees need to be better… there is just no other way to say it. Honestly, if you want them to be better, Adam Silver needs to stop enabling the offense over the defense.. no more carrying the ball, no more traveling, no more “gather step”, no more illegal screens (there are over 50 screens every game), no more three step dunks, etc. As a referee, I can tell you that the high school and college rulebooks are so different from the NBA rule book that you can’t even compare the two. That’s how a lot of these referees start out their refereeing careers… refereeing high school of recreational leagues. The NBA isn’t basketball… it’s a business and a form of entertainment for people. You’re asking people to referee an entertainment show. If that were the case, don’t call any fouls on the superstar and whenever possible, give the superstar the advantage. The majority of people aren’t there to watch Desmond Bane, Tyrese Maxey, Dorian Finney-Smith, Malcolm Brogdon, etc. They want to see Curry, James, Durant, Tatum, Embiid, Antetokounmpo, etc. That’s just not basketball… it’s individualizing the sport and athletes (which is what MJ did) and you can’t referee that. Anyway, tell me what you think!

I think the best way to prevent this kind of thing in the future is to have NBA referees retrained every couple of years, or maybe even every year, if the referee has a history of making wrong/soft calls. Also, introducing some kind of referral system, where the team can call for a decision to be reviewed would help the game. It could be done like cricket where there are a certain amount of challenges a team could make per game, if their challenge is successful then they get the challenge back, but if it's unsuccessful, they lose it.

Techs are a big issue, but the biggest issue is when refs don't apply the rules equally. I hate non-calls more than techs. It really ruins the game. On most plays, there is always something that happens that could be categorized as a foul. Some players/teams will get soft calls all the time, and others won't get any calls. The ability to challenge calls actually made the issue worse. When they review, they continue to not apply the rules fairly. If challenged, they can enforce the rules strictly or loosely to justify their bias. Worst non call is definitely when norman powell fouled by ben simmons. KZfaq it, there's no excuse!

While I agree the bad tech and calls should result in refs being disciplined, I don't want them to be less sensitive in most situations. Nobody wants to go back to watching a player argue with the ref all the way back down the court or even leave their team 4 on 5 cause they're still on the offensive end arguing a foul call. Good video. Someone needs to start holding these refs accountable for inconsistent foul calls.

I´ve been saying it for years now: The NBA needs a grading system for refs that is attached to their salary for each game. Too many bad games and you are suspended for a few games, several bad games, longer suspension. Good grades lead to a bonus and to be allowed to call big games. The grades should be given by former players, refs and coaches.

Furthermore, teams should retain their challenge if their challenge is successful. This would make teams more judicious in their challenges but allow them to challenge those early game, momentum-changing 2nd fouls on key players and if successful still be abke to challenge those late game, missed out of bounds calls so crucial to a team's fortunes. Teams shouldn't have to give up an early bad call to retain the right to chalenge a late bad call.

If hedge funds and money managers can do it with trillions on Wall St., the refs of the NBA can certainly do it to help determine the outcome of games. Mostly for gambling.

To play devil's advocate on the Draymond Green technical, it's for stepping on the court as a bench player during live play, which is an automatic technical, refs have done the same to Mo Wagner Vs Raptors and are pretty consistent in calling it

I dont wanna sugarcoat anything that the refs are doing but I just wanna say that being a referee is incredibly hard. Like a bunch of things that you need to look out for in milliseconds at a time. True, but we're not talking about calls here. We're talking about refs using their power to express their emotions when everyone is asking and expecting the players to keep their own emotions in check. Simply clapping or yelling to a teammate, or bounce passing a ball to a ref who can't manage to catch it isn't tech worthy. You know what's just as hard as calling an NBA game? Playing in it. Frustration is a real emotion that refs shouldn't get to T up.

Imagine a last game of the regular season where that game means playoffs or go home, and then ref calls BS tech and you lose game by 1 pt. You don’t make playoffs, only to have that tech rescinded. Or same scenario, only it’s game 7 of NBA finals. There would be riots!

The way I see it, this is another way for some officials ("not all officials are like this I truly believe that") to rig the game, or have some sense of justice/payback for the teams that they are biased with/rooting for on the league. Because let's face it, they are people as well that has their own biases. It is sad that just by showing how passionate you are in playing basketball, a player can be thrown out of a game and the worst part is if that player hits the technical foul ceiling, they would miss on games. Games that they could contribute into a win or a lost, so having them receive a certain amount of technical fouls, would make sure that they would miss some games, games that could be crucial to some teams progress in the league. On the players side, when being frustrated on themselves for missing a layup and showing it by instinctively clapping their hands is something, that some players would understand, even on the non-professional leagues some players does that and by doing that it does not harm anyone, as long as you don't hit anyone with your hands. But receiving a technical foul for clapping your hands out of sure frustration with yourself, is really bonkers in my opinion, have this referee's never played basketball before? and never clapped their own hands to show frustration on themselves by missing a shot that they made when they are clearly open?

Sunlight is the best disinfectant, so the saying goes. I suggest that Referees, like players n coaches, should be made available to the press in post game interviews. Guidelines cpuld be set up to prevent quarrelling and personal attacks. Some way has to be found to rein in the power hungry and unscrupulous refs in the game. Call it a press challenge and they are allowed 3 and they retain their challenge as long as the Press gets it right. I would tune in for those.

The Draymond one is because the game is still going. There’s a difference between game still going and there is a dead ball situation. All the other ones I’m with you, but I have to say one big thing about being a referee is that they have to control the game and steer it without complaining and interruption. Anything that they deem it’ll affect the game from normally proceeding, they will call

NBA really needs to sit down with their refs, and tell them that these petty techs are a no go. It's getting out of hand. If the players can't even show abit of emotions, it just ruins the sport. Unless the players are saying something to the refs, it should never be a tech.

The players should do a protest of some sort just to show Adam Silver "hey, these refs need more accountability. Dont speak about it, be about it." In regards to like fines or suspensions, just like they give to players. Effecting momentum and outcomes of games ruins the authenticity part of things.

The problem with the referees is that unlike players, there is no penalty system in place to penalize the referees for bad refereeing. You see the same culprits perpetrating the wrong again and again. NBA should put in place a tiered system for bad referring. A tier 3 bad call gets them a warning. A tier 2 bad call (or two tier three bad calls) means they get fined and suspended for a game. A tier 1 bad call (or two tier 2 bad calls) means a much larger fine and multiple games suspension, and illegible to referee the finals games. If a referee commits more than 3 tier 1 bad calls in two seasons, they should be sacked permanently. Also there should be a team of experts ranking the bad calls into different tiers - it should consist of highly reputable retired referees, ex-players and coaches and media commentators, just to balance things up.

As a former soccer and current football referee, the best action you can do before you start to penalize someone for something not too big of a deal (like an automatic disqualification or a particularly hard foul) is to talk to the player(s) affected. You don't have to be all buddy-budy, but a friendly reminder, this behaviour will not be tolerated going forward or there will be consequences. If he/she/they stop with the problematic behaviour, all is well, if they don't, they'll get penalties/a yellow/a second yellow card. A good game as a ref is a game, where when looking back, noone remembers your name or the other referees.

I won't waist my money anymore to anything on NBA basketball anymore Referees make sports boring to watch. The commissioner Adam silver should be responsible for these refs. If the refs were fined $10 for each of the calls they know they missed or for stupid calls the refs would own the NBA money from their own pocket.
