NBA season just started and players are load managing

NBA season is back, and so is the load management. The league said it would enforce "STRICT" rules to curb it, but thus far, it looks the same as any other season. How can the NBA expect fans to care when the stars sit out nearly half the games. The NBA playoffs are all that matter, but in the long term, they won't even matter as the amount of money players make nowadays outstrips the importance of a chip. The NBA is making so much money that until the bottom line gets affected, this issue won't be properly addressed anytime soon.

The funny thing about this: Even though the NHL has the same number of games as the NBA, most of the star players will play on an average of 60 to 82 games a year for each regular season; unless, they are injured.

I know right? Do you know if any other sports league in which players do anything similar to the NBA load management? The European soccer season is pretty intense, and some of the teams play extra games nearly every week through the champions league which necessitates travel out of the country for away games. So they play a weekend in their own country, travel for Wednesday game into another country, then fly back home for another game on the weekend.

It is almost the same with any athletic activity if you don't consistently do it, take time off, and then try to ramp up to 100%...you are going to hurt yourself. Load managing really isn't prolonging anything. Kawhi has played 264 less games than bad back Larry Bird and Larry was only in the NBA for 2 more season than Kawhi currently and only played 6 games in 88-89. It is just prolonging that check cause they ain't playing more games.

That's the problem teams rest players so they get healthy which is fine. The main issue with that is they'll go from a night off to playing nearly 40 minutes the next day. The reason it worked for the spurs is cus their "load management" was minutes based. 39 yo duncan played 77 games as the anchor of a championship defense. For all the talk about LeBron's longevity he cant even get to 60 games consistently anymore
@arguseyed9982

Difference is getting another max contract. We are talking about almost double the money in a single season than what Bird made in his entire career. So yeah, players today have all the incentive to try prolong their careers as much as possible and care less about accomplishments and winning. Or even playing.

What is crazy is the NBA is not a grueling league physically. Contact is basically against the rules, and the time outs, fouls, out of bounds and commercials stop the game every 2-3 minutes at most. They “play” 36 minutes but with 10-12 breaks in those minutes, the game goes on for two hours and they only travel on average 2.5 miles in that time.

Even with Damian Lilliard coming to my team, even with my NFL team the Packers absolutely sh*tting the bed this season I am still just not that interested in watching the NBA until much closer to the end of the season. Which is weird because when I was growing up I couldn't stand football and only watched the NBA. Load management, open and accepted season long tanking and players that just don't seem to care are the reasons for me losing interest, I can see more intensity at a 5 on 5 pick up game at the park.

When this stipulation was initially instituted I was already incredulous on if Silver would possess the fortitude to enforce this policy. As much as I despised David Stern for not giving Kobe Chris Paul for "basketball reasons" he would have never allowed the nonsense we see transpiring today. The only perimeter player in history to average over 30+ points a game could lead the league in scoring whilst simultaneously being one of the greatest defenders and did so with consistency. Jordan was almost mythological. I wouldn't believe in half the things he did if footage of it didn't exist of it.

Sorry for the paragraph below and I'm not looking to spark a debate, and thank you Commissioner for another amazing vid. Here goes: This is why the NBA should shorten the season. It would compensate for the games that aren't played. They should find a rough estimate of the average amount of games played by all players and modify the number of games towards that number. An in season tournament isn't going to change the players perspective on regular season importance. Lowering the number of games may not lower the intensity of the season, but would make load management not look as bad and could lower the rate in which it occurs.

The games are boring and players today are trash. No defense and everyone has the greenlight to shoot the 3. Everyone game looks the same. A shorter session with the same trash is going to be the same problem

@@ckingtruth sounds like you just don’t like the NBA…which is okay. Don’t watch something you dislike. Watch college (far better for what it sounds like you’re looking for). I agree to an extent, but it’s not going to change so complaining about it on YT accomplishes nothing

When a player actually shows up for all 82 games, it's a subject for amazement. Looney has done that, for Golden State. No, he isn't an all-star, but fans love the guy. It's particularly noteworthy in his case because much of his early career was spent in a wheelchair. Hip surgeries. He still has an awkward gait, but he suits up and gets out there and puts in the work. The two things I can't stand in a player are drama and load management. Oh, add a third: lack of effort. (I'm looking at you, LeBron.) There is a popular belief among NBA players that when the playoffs come around, they can find a 'second gear' and win, that all of that regular season rest will pay off when it counts. Does it work? Jimmy Butler thinks so. He can't be bothered to carry his team in the regular season. Playoff P thinks so. Paul George is a second gear player. So is his silent sidekick Kawhi Leonard, though we have to suspect some awful physical ailment torments that guy. We don't know what it costs him to suit up. Might not be easy at all. Well, retire, then. Fans paying hundreds of dollars to see stars play, and they don't? That's cheating fans. Too many games. We all know that's true. But money drives that decision, and all of the fallout from it. It's just greed. When fans stop rewarding it, it'll change. Not until then. As for the rule change disqualifying players from awards who miss too many games? Window dressing. Somebody will get awards and will be lionized for them. It hardly matters who.

This ESPECIALLY sucks if you happen to live in a town like I don’t know…Detroit? The best players won’t show up because why try against a young rebuilding team when it’s also not a massive market? Like even if you aren’t a fan of whatever small market team you live by it still hurts you since your favorite players will likely be “injured” just about every time they come to your city.

The players union should be calling all these guys up about missing games. Salaries cant keep going up if viewership and attendence starts going down. And ill take it a step further, tv networks are gonna look to drop games or request to pay less for access rights.

Remember when Curry had to take a small deal cause of the ankle injuries?? why teams dont that anymore with fragile players like Zion and AD...

And that small deal proved to be a hell of a bargain for the Warriors. But I remember when people thought they overpaid for Steph with that rookie extension in 2012 (5 years, $40 million), and that was chalked up mainly due to the ankle injuries.

Just start paying these guys on a per game basis. They want the full contract, play the full schedule, every game off reduces their pay. Will fix this 'load management' shit overnight

This shit frustrates me to no end because I watch NHL and UFC, where atheletes get paid less, and continue to play/fight through some of the most debilitating injuries. Meanwhile in the NBA one can sit out half the season because of hurt feelings.

Playing 65/82 games for an NBA player is the equivalent of 13.6/17 games in the NFL. Imagine Pat Mahomes sitting out 3 games of the season due to 'Load Management'

Can every single player do “load management“ or is it only famous ones? How famous does one have to be? Do the European players load manage as well? I never hear about them so I’m just wondering or maybe people are only complaining about American players doing it? I’m not trying to be controversial. I’m just trying to understand what’s going on because I don’t know if any other sports league in which this happens. Thank you for the video!

Yeah, he got some hops for sure. He's one of the reasons why this Portland rebuild sounds very exciting, besides Scoot and Anfernee. As an aside, Malcolm Brogdon's been BIG BALLIN' to start the season as well.

The current generation (including older players) simply don't want to put in the xtra work to maintain fitness/health/logevity. As the saying goes - the older you get, the more work you have to put into your body to maintain the same results. That's why I respect LeBron so much in that sense.
