"You know the thing that hurts me the most is that I have to watch the NBA Finals and they have 'world champion' on their head. World champion of what? The United States?
So now NBA champs can't be called "world champs"? We discuss the reaction from NBA circles due to his comments on "Inside the Association."

They just can't get it through their thick ass heads that the NBA is a domestic competition just like how the Premier League is a domestic competition. Both competitions have some of the best players in their respective sport from around the globe yet you won't catch a single soul that would even dare to suggest that the Premier League is equal to the World Cup.

@@elidamsft players from around the world competing for a league that resides in a country with literally only one team located in Canada inspite of many great athletes across 40 countries is not the world stage. This is literally the NBA National Basketball Association. It’s not the IBA international basketball association. You want them to be called world champions? Then call it International and allow teams all across the world to compete at that level and then you can call it world champions. Noah Lyles competes in the world circuit competing against athletes across 195 countries in the World Athletic championships. And he also made an accomplishment of being a world champion in three events in this years championships. He has every right to talk, walk, brag, and showboat as a “world champion”

You guys in the comment are missing the point. The NBA is an American/Canadian League. Them having International players doesn't make it a World League... In Football/Soccer, the team who win the title isn't called World Champion just because they have International players playing in it... Manchester City aren't the best football club in the world until they win the Club World Cup. They have some of the best players in the world, playing in the most popular football league in the world, but that doesn't make them world champions. The same thing applies here.

Just because a league is the best in the world it doesn’t mean that they can call the champions of their league World Champions. If that was the case premier league champions would be world champions, without even playing against other teams outside of their country. The only way to declare a club world champions would be to host a competition with the best teams of every basketball league and have them play each other. Then the winner of it all could be declared World Champion. Kind of what football does with the Club World Cup.

In soccer, all the best players in the world want to play in Europe, because it is the place of the big leagues, of the big teams that dominate, but when a team like Real Madrid that won the UCL with a goalkeeper from Costa Rica, a striker from Portugal, midfielders from Brazil and Croatia, etc. That is to say, they have quite a few great players, yet they are not called world champions, they are called European champions, if Flamengo from Brazil wins the Libertadores, they are not called champions of the world, but of South America, that is why a club World Cup was invented , to find out which club would be the world champion, as simple as that

At least not at the same rate that the sport is played in the U.S. Outside of the country the sport is by enlarge considered an elitist sport. Meaning, only those with the means can truly play it. Amazingly it’s the same for America as it pertains to soccer/football. That sport is considered elitist in this country and you have to be affluent to get the best training. Look up Pay to play for more information. If the US actually looked at the sport different with all the resources we have, it would also be a different story here.

Meaning, playing soccer in some league in your town or state. Every weekend in my town here in the U.S, you can see parks full of people playing soccer competitively (all ages). Imagine the is same scenario outside the U.S. Can you say the same thing about people of all ages playing basketball, baseball, or American football playing competitively across the nation?

I'm sure people are aware of the difference btwn national and international but the actual reason we talking about Noah Lyles at all is bc his type of sport doesn't have this American exceptionalism anchor around it's neck. Yeah, the NBA is the best league in the world but to equate winning a NBA championship with being world champs is actually intentionally ignorant&arrogant towards the international competitions that exist to make world champs. Football (get over it) has the world cup and the champions league and only one makes world champions, Rugby got a world cup and a whole bunch of leagues with great teams on it but only one competition to become world champs at the end, Hockey has a world cup and the NHL's "Stanley cup". The US is the only country that insists it's domestic league winners are "world champions" and I'd really like you guys to consider the whole "but the NBA has the best talent.." copium excuses only exist so you can ignore how the team had no bigs, no rebounds, no team strategy and a few predictable chokes at the end. Noah Lyles said what everybody without USA!USA!USA!-googles has been thinking for the last decades: You've been beating ur chest to show ur the greatest for so long, how much substance is under all that bluster? The only strategy for the whole tournament was iso/star ball which will get beaten by equal talent and a functioning team strategy every time, i.e. Germany & Lithuania but you can't see that cause you're still mad the US doesn't win every match by default. having the NBA champions duke it out with other leagues champions. And then yes if that team really the best, then by all means everyone in the world will recognise the American team as the campion of the world. And high are the chances that will happen. Best teams are there. Best players are there etc. but that’s not granted. Look at other sports for example. Which other country has the stupid idea to call a national level champion, world champion? In England they don’t do it with football. And that’s probably the equivalent of NBA in football. In Spain they don’t do it, and for many years they had the best 2 players in the world facing off. And when they won, one or the other, they never called themselves world champions. Even if for a fact not many teams in the world could grant a win over that Barcelona or Real Madrid teams. If they wanted to be called world champions then they would have to earn it. Americans even are quick to say that dunno what percentage are foreigners. The best are there. Yada yada. Doesn’t that even tell you anything ? That maybe. Just maybe, Euro basket is getting better with time? And probably the difference isn’t that big at all for Americans to just claim they the best without even really testing it? The difference isn’t as clear as it was 30 years ago. NBA had some of their best teams in recent years being defeated by European teams. You only don’t see it coz you choose to be ignorant. And it’s a lot easier to claim a tittle you don’t even know if you really deserve or not. It’s that 5 year old logic, you beat that guy and I beat you. Noah is right…only on technicality. But in practicality he lacks context because the NBA is the “ National Basketball Association”. But it doesn’t have players only from one country. Literally 4 of the top 5 players are international. And if they were to play for their home country they would be the best players undoubtedly. Also the crazy thing about the title “World Champion” is that it doesn’t matter about the competition, only the representation. Switch the flags of the people that raced in the track events with state flags and Noah would be the world champion of nothing. The competition staid the same, but the “REPRESENTATION” changed. Just food for thought🤔
