Kristen Welker, NBC News chief White House correspondent and co-host of Weekend TODAY, reveals that she and husband John Hughes are having their first child together with help from a surrogate. Welker and Hughes struggled with infertility for years before finding their surrogate. Welker found out her surrogate was pregnant before moderating the final 2020 presidential debate, and says thinking about her baby daughter helped keep her calm during the high-stakes debate.

Agreed!! Shes very intelligent and yes, "eloquent" is the perfect word to describe her. I think she is really accomplished and yes she did an incredible job at the Presidential debate, I love how Even Chris Wallace said he was "jealous" with how well she did. The way she had control of it, certainly wasn't an easy thing to do. Her parents raised a true masterclass and must be very proud of her!!

At 65 I struggled with infertility for years, in the years when it wasn’t talked about and nobody knew, i have three blessed adopted children and barely think of those years and my children are my greatest achievement event and thing in my life.

I gave it up to God after infertility issues, I said "if it happens it happens, if it doesn't, it doesn't." Then at the age of 38, my husband was 51! We were blessed with a son, through a last minute adoption of a beautiful blue eyed boy who has given us the will to live through unimaginable tragedy and strife. It happens in God's time, God bless you :)

A heartwarming story but it’s hard to put aside the fact that most people who struggle with infertility can’t manage the cost of infertility treatments, surrogacy, or even adoption and still have enough money to raise the child after it comes into the world. I’m happy for Kristen and John but I also feel sadness for my friends and family who can’t hand over hundreds of thousands of dollars to experience the same joy some of us, like myself, get for free.

That is very true, I struggled with infertility for almost 15 years I did 3 expensive Ivf that we put all of our saving into and three failed and just as you said adoption is expensive too but I found a foster to adopt program and this is how I became a mom we adopted a 16 months old boy from the foster care, yes I missed on his first 16 months and God knows what he has been through until then now he is 5 and he is smart, amazing, the light of my life.

Thank you so much for bringing up this subject. I am over the moon for those who have success in whichever method brings them to motherhood. But for a large number of us, the money runs out. So yes, it is not always a success and money does give you options.

@First class Thank you for letting others know about this, but private market options still costs, and family members have their own issues to contend with and may not be available or willing. So in the end money can be a factor in achieving parenthood.

The emotional toll of infertility is hard. I was lucky I always knew I would not be able to carry a child so I never had the high hopes and expectations of becoming pregnant so the narrative was okay how are we going to do this. We adopted my first and my sister my angel, was my surrogate and have a beautiful daughter. It takes a special person to be able to do this! I remember going to some of the dr appointments and see the baby and the heart rate. I am in awe still 8 years later! You are never alone!

Awe! Congratulations! Every time I get even just a little frustrated with my kids, I alway pause for a minute and think about the people who would do anything to be in my position... to be a parent. Millions of women have their first in their 40's. The '40s are part of the Childbearing years. I worked at several Fertility clinics over the years. It's about a woman's Fertility; Not age.

This is why. Have learned that we should let go of the small things. Bitterness, anger, etc because you never know the road someone is walking. Fertility is hard! Struggled with it for a long time. My daughters are 10 yrs apart and it took me 4 yrs to get pregnant the first time and I was told that I would never be able to have children. All my love to you and your husband Kristin! Motherhood is a blessing! Being able t love a child regardless is a blessing in itself. They are a gift!💕

Congrats Kristen!! So happy for you. I'm struggling through the same situation right now. It's a hard road to go thru. I myself went thru 2 failed IVF and still hoping for our miracle child. Process is hard, not guarenteed and very expensive with no help from insurance company.

I have had four miscarriages and one stillbirth over the years. Interspersed in there, we were lucky to have three children. My children are 27, 21 and 13. Those years of "trying" and the losses take a toll on you...emotionally and physically. Your heart shatters with every loss and every disappointment. To parents with children created in ALL ways....you are no less a mommy or Daddy. Parenting is LOVE...PERIOD. No matter how you become a parent, it's the most rewarding privilege ever. I am glad woman are opening more about fertility issues. I’ve done IVF myself just last year and it failed, I was supposed to started my second one just last week and it had to be postponed due to high estrogen, it just SO stressful. It just too much to deal with.

Standing with all moms who are struggling to have their beauty do miracles. I was 1 in 8. We battled infertility for six years and today she is a healthy two year old! My husband was 52 when she was born and I was 33. Praying for a smooth delivery and John & Kristin, get ready for the most beautiful journey ever! Yea some days of parenthood are challenging but I promise the good are so worth it!
