I once knew a Gentleman in Adelaide, (South Australia) who every morning (Monday to Friday) went into the city and begged for two dollars for Coffee. After three hundred people had each donated him two dollars, he took his six hundred dollars and went home. On every Friday afternoon he would take his three thousand dollars in two dollar coins into his bank and deposit his money into his bank account. Thus he made in one week of casual ‘employment’ more money than I made in a fortnight as a full time employee of the Australian Commonwealth Government.

To a lot of people it's much less awkward asking strangers for money than it is asking family, because if a stranger is mean to you it's like you'll never see them again, but you don't want to annoy, or have someone you see at Thanksgiving every year think your being inappropriate!

I live in Spokane Washington and there’s a huge homeless camp here with more than 600 people. They don’t want to work and nearby homes and businesses are broken into on a regular basis and they interfere with Police business. The Department of Commerce has given Catholic Charities $6.5 million dollars to renovate an old hotel to house some of the homeless where they will get 3 free meals a day to boot. Many people in Spokane are angry including me. Absolutely insane!

I remember visting my sister in PA with my family and my best friend, my parents went up to their hotel room while my best friend and I, who were both about 18yrs old at the time, spent time in the restaurant area, and a extremely well dressed gentleman saw us and came in telling us that he was on a date and he literally ran out of gas money and how embarrassed he was. Ignorantly, I gave this man $10 and my best friend gave him $20. The next day, my friend and I told my parents and sister what happened, and they said we both got scammed. I ran from a court case back in the mid 2000’s. I became a drifter, I had over 300$ in a week and made it from phoenix az to Hartford Connecticut. I then made it to Texas then to Louisiana. I had 2200$ by now in change and cash. I just walked around Louisiana getting drunk and partying. Slept on the side of the highway. Put plastic down, then cardboard, a jail like blanket, then my blanket and pillow. I then was asked to if I wanted a job for a week painting barns. Sure! They got me a cheap motel room and bought me cigarettes and beer, food and a small fee for the day. I did that for a month. I then left and went into the oilfield, no questions asked, they didn’t care about what you did on your time. Just be ready to work. I did that for 3 years. Made 210$ a day and was fed, clothed and housed. Obama became president and homeland security took over the ports. I was soon arrested by the us marshals and brought back to AZ. I ended up doing 4 months in tent city. Man! I had a freaking blast on the run.

Some people that stand on a corner have a great skill that your ignorant of,some know very well how to ask and thier not doing nothing as you imply, thier fund raising and its work but you don't understand that, and some recieve more money then others because they work hard at it. Try standing on a corner for 8,10,12 hours a day walking back and forth with the sun beating down on u,the snow freezing you,the wind blowing you around and the freeze rain soaking you to the bone, also the dust mites biting and the exhaust fumes sticking in you it's hard work, and it's a skill very few have and for those that know how to ask correctly recieve enough to pay thier bills, help others financially and start a buisnes, that's right some of us save those dollars and change in order to employ themselves with thier own well paying buisness. Some of us never had a mom or dad and grew up on the streets but we don't murder steal or burglarized we politely ask people and thank GOD thiers people who give.

@@sanchezs7614 Exactly, I used to be involved in charity work for the homeless as well and still do work with people actively looking for work and getting the help to get there. I’m happy to help anyone who’s willing to help themselves but it’s shocking how many people purely want the handout and that’s it, they turn their nose up at any prospects of employment and responsibility. It’s why I still try to help anyone who’s actually trying because they are trying to lift themselves up and to me it doesn’t matter how you got there I respect the fact they’ve decided it’s time for change. I work with someone who used to be homeless and they told me the hardest part about getting clean and back on their feet was that there were so many programs that catered to them that they didn’t need to change. They said there’s an abundance of help and programs if you’re truly looking but when you can get free food, clothing, tents and sleeping bags, phones and monetary assistance that the necessity to change just isn’t there so the desire to wanes as well. Even though I’ve worked in that area for years it was shocking to hear it from someone who lived it.

See my problem with panhandlers is you don't know if you can trust them. In both areas I've worked I see panhandlers begging for money, most of which are returnees. I want to believe they aren't actually homeless, but doing it because its easier to beg for money on the street then it is to get a job. As a delivery driver in my area that also lives in the area, I see one particular person always on the street asking for money and seen them walk back and forth. I can't say for certain they are homeless, I believe they live nearby and are just trying to avoid getting an actual job, but again like they say, you don't know. I agree that we should help people on the streets, but this isn't the right way. The best way is to give to supplies and donations to shelters that need them period. If you see a homeless person not begging and is carrying everything with them, by all means don't hesitate to give them something. It's more so that we live in a day and age where "trust" is a big problem and you don't know how honest the person is with a sign truly is.

Meanwhile the real estate speculation was brutally ended when the virus closed down Oakland and the even the Oakland Raiders moved out...the skyscrapers are mostly empty, grocery stores and big box merchants left, the military bases were closed, schools are closing, teachers are on strike every year, the police have only 10 police officer to patrol over a million people.., now in comparison across the bay in San Francisco, the city smells like urine, feces and irony, cars windows being smashed, businesses robbed, shoplifters running in massive groups Back to Oakland, I like saying based on what I witness, this is the city where technology and drama come to die, Borders is gone, Bed, Bath & Beyond is gone. At night, there is nowhere for any tourist to eat nor to shop for groceries The city of dreams is now the city of blight and economic collapse, persecution for the homeless is not conducive to economic growth, that is how blight starts when the economy gets tight, and working capital land are gone.....

Panhandling is the only way to be able to stay in a motel if you are homeless. It's impossible to sleep in shelters since the drug addicts talk all night. Plus, most shelters have bed bugs and lice infestations, and it's really easy to catch diseases like Mersa and TB in those places. People with pets can't go to shelters, and families get split up if they go to a family shelter, since only women and little ones are allowed in those shelters. Husband's, grandparents and children over 18 aren't allowed in. Half of all panhandlers don't want to sleep outside because it can be dangerous. They beg so they can buy a room for the night.

I'm just in a bad spot but the police do not mess with me which is why I stay where I'm at. But the money varies widely. I could get 30 dollars in an hour or I could get nothing for three straight hours. And he was right about it being awkward and hot and not fun.

Well, i just found my new job. Wow! $80.00 for 2 hours standing on the street. Since i don't have a drug habit nor do i drink or smoke i should be setting pretty by the end of the week. Lets see 80 x's 5 is 400 a week. So $1,200.00 a month. Yeah why work weekends if you don't have to. Ha ha I'm kidding but WOW! Where can I go and do this. I will wear a hat and shades and a mask if it gets me $80.00 a day for 2 short hours. Can i say I'm self employed and take off hat shoes and markers and signs and clothing as a uniform business expense? Just wondering.. That's my only overhead.. Clothing shoes hat marker and sign. What about water bottles or canteens? Might have to look into this. Lucrative business like on John Wick.

The problem with donating to non-profit organizations is the high salaries of the officers holding top management positions within those organizations. Most of the money go to pay the high salaries/administrative expenses and only a small portion are actually being used to help the needy in the community. Churches are classical examples as most of the money received from their donors are being used to pay the pastors’ salaries. A large percentage is also being used to pay the salaries of other church employees and to maintain church buildings.

Most of these people need to stop feeling sort for themselves, and push through. No work, knock on doors, it works , I have done week in week out, it works, no car, get a bicycle, no house, get a tent, until u can get an apartment, can’t afford it, get a roommate. Need a job, knock on business doors, it works, too lazy to knock on doors, start calling business or or people, I did it, it’s called sales. I have even hitch hiked to work for six months, I was only late one time. I slept in a tent for six weeks in upstate Vermont, cold. People are just not using their resources and are lazy, shit I think im lazy half the time but somehow I get things done.
