For example bananas are usually cheap, take one stamp off of the fruit put on finger and all of your expensive fruits are the price of bananas. My 2 cents: My closest Walfart has like 10 self checkouts at either end of the store, and one attendant who plays an endless game of Whack-A-Mole as they adjust prices. manually enter stuff with damaged or no bar code, approving beer sales, etc. There was even an employee I used to see with a prosthetic peg leg, and she kept up without complaint. I live in Arizona and they usually start off @ around $15 an hour. I currently get paid $15.65. Oftentimes we get overtime which is something that rarely exists in customer service jobs. Every month I get 16 hours of overtime so that’s $23.47 x 16 = $375.60 . $2,378 before taxes before I hit that overtime mark. I now get to work 3-4 days a week. I’d say it was best decision I’ve made. If I can do it so can many other cashiers. Oh and rent is pretty cheap out here. I only pay $387.50 but that’s because I’m sharing rent with a roommate even though I don’t have to. **** MUST READ*** The 3 million figure is a lie. People were quoting the numbers of cashier jobs in the US at 3.3 million in 2011, 2012 and 2016. But in those years, the stores in my area...for many different brands hadn't pushed the self checkout scheme yet. This year, when I go to Walmart and for most of it this year also, when I go to the checkout stand there are only 1-2 cashiers in the day, and in the evening there's ONLY machines. But back in 2012, and 2016 it had probably 4 to 6 cashiers in that store. Another source I looked at also says that in Florida the entire state's walmarts are only by machines. So how can there still be 3 million cashiers? I see other stores are doing this also. I don't have exact figures but I'm guessing that 3.3 million is now really less than 1 million with at least a million unemployed.

Look the reason I use the self checkouts is because they use a better queue system. Customers don't like to stand in one long line but it's better to use this type of line to keep every register working if there is a slowdown on any other register. Self checkouts do this long line and regular checkouts are stuck with the older line queue. I had went to buy alcohol yesterday and waited in line for 15 minutes when for self checkout it takes less than 2 because of how fast people get in and out and on with life. Don't knock the companies, knock customer's refusal to accept better systems of processing.

Now that our local grocery store has conditioned us to scan and bag our own groceries, it's not unusual for management to leave us standing in lines 8-10 deep, just to purchase food at the self-checkout. So much for added "convenience". The machines regularly malfunction and when they do management expects you to put it all back in the cart and start over. Plenty of times they fail to load the machines with enough cash, so even though you gathered the products, carted them up, scanned and bagged them yourself, you're now expected to wait for the one harried employee tasked with manning a dozen checkouts so they can open the drawer and make change. Revealing the company name here would probably result in my comment being removed, so let's just say the name rhymes with 'ogre'...
@CannabisTechLife
@CannabisTechLife 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of your points, however the 10 people deep line is not an issue. It's actually an improvement. It allows the first person in line to automatically move onto scanning items when _any_ of the registers frees up. This means if there is a delay at one, another free one keeps the line _moving_ however in a traditional register setup where each one has a separate line, if there is a delay at checkout then it holds up the entire line. At the same time other lines might not have any customers and be wasting queue space and customer time. It really is more efficient, it's just customers like you get uncomfortable seeing a big line vs a lot of tiny lines...

The shoprite in my town has multiple self check out lanes and ONE real register open. This issue? This is a retirement area. So you have 25 senior citizens who have no idea how to use the machines and are not in the physical health to do their own bagging and lifting. These stores are cutting back on workers to maximize profit. The customer experience is destroyed. CVS near me I have to scream to even find the one panicked and stressed out worker who is running the whole store, and I had to give LESSONS at the self check out to the two elderly women who saw me (a young person) and assumed I knew how to do it. Stores need to hire workers at a livable wage. Too many people feel like they are broke anyway so why put the effort?! I shouldn’t have to be there teaching two older women how to scan items, while the 3rd old man in line looks at me hoping that I’ll help him next while I’m just also in there shopping. They need to have the option of both. Not one lane so that you end up getting stressed out and doing it yourself anyway. This isn’t an option, they have made it the only option. They are forcing people to do self checkout by making the other lanes unbearable to deal with using.

I say it's both a bad thing and a good thing. It's a bad thing for cashiers but good for local small businesses. It's better for communities also as many people be more likely to frequent small local businesses. People will be buying less since someone else won't be doing the checkout for them. Which would probably trim their waistline and keeping more money in their bank. Local is better than mega supermarkets.

The cashier in this video shows exactly why many people dislike the manned cashiers. She says "I sell more products". Many people do not want to be sold products. They want to get what they need and get out. Not be given a hard sell, or heaven forbid be asked every time they go through a line f they want to donate to a particular charity. Also this report is playing with stats. Sure there are cashier jobs going away, but how many of these jobs are changed to a different position, and thus not technically lost.

Using Self Checkout is a Civic Duty - Much like using sites like Expedia instead of hiring a travel agent or walking through a "Chipotle-style" restaurant line rather than tipping a server, it's more efficient and cuts costs for companies (not hiring unnecessary employees) so products cost less by virtue of not having an added hidden service fee. Saying "I don't use self checkout, I prefer a person" is really saying "It's ok for everyone including low-income families to pay more because I personally like a little more service". It's selfish, inefficient, and ultimately is delaying society's end goal of Universal Basic Income. Be Better.

What happens to the employees? They get to stand around and supervise the self checkouts. Did ATM's take away the bank teller's job? You have used a self checkout.

@@tula1433 I see your point on elderly people having to interface with them but their convenience to the many heavily outweighs the inconvenience to the few.
