This is probably the most disappointing loss you'll ever see. Hidlay actually winning this match changes the course of history to where he's the official dog of the weight class once Nolf is gone. Imagine what that win does to his confidence? He went undefeated into the finals the year prior as a true freshman & if he takes him out he feels he has the ability to take out anyone. I still feel for him over this "loss".

People don’t realize how much momentum is gained or lost by whether you get a takedown at the end of a period or GET taken down at the end of a period. That’s a 3 point swing in under 10 match seconds because of the no takedown call, in Nolf’s favor.
@nickomalley636

Was def 2 for Hidlay but I don’t think we can say who’d win if Nolf was down 2-0. Not saying nolf would win but the match would have been different and it was anyone’s match. Some people wrestle better when theyre behind and push the pace.
@avidadolares
@avidadolares 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there was still a lot of wrestling to do... so cant say how it would have affected the match outcome. Still, though the ref had replay and still got it wrong (IMO). If it were 2, maybe Nolf responds, BUT maybe Hidlay responds too and is even more motivated...who knows. Shame it had to have that controversy

I agree as well one of the best 3x ever butttttt that one call at the end of the first period doesn’t define the end of the match, probably would have been a little different of a match but that doesn’t mean he would have automatically won the match if that call went his way.

Hidlay should have won this match. Nolf was a generational wrestler in college. Not taking anything away from him. But I think Hidlay focused on a rematch with Nolf all year and it showed. That first TD should not have been reversed by replay. If Hidlay would have gotten that takedown, he would not have shot a desperation shot that Nolf scored on. If you watch wrestling all season you realize Nolf is better. But if you just watch this match, you may think Hidlay is better.

I got the sense watching this at the time that Nolf was, for once, a bit nervous about not losing his final match. I remember retherford wrestling someone who has gotten through the tournament and he won the match pretty easily but didn't dominate like he usually does, and he said the same thing at the end - that for once, he was maybe a little nervous and wrestling too conservative. Styles sometimes create weird results, too. Remember retherford just destroying pantaleo over and over, and then the next year, he's up a class and nolf had to ride him out to win narrowly.

Looking at it frame by frame I can see it not being a takedown by a split second. The instant Hidlay's arm was around to take control, Nolf's hip had just left the mat.
