I believe Hashirama was just so talented that he figured out on his own how to use “sage” mode and created his own unique sage mode that was not dependent on any outside forces

It's been years since the OG series and shippuden ended. This man still manages to make multiple videos about the same topic, yet still manages to keep us entertained

I think Hashirama just has a genetic defect that allows him to to handle chakra on a completely different level than most people. I think Kishimoto hints at this every time he mentions 'Hashirama Cells' and it just manifest as in the same way as sage mode. If Hashirama is a sage, is a chakra sage.

I think him being a slug sage makes the most sense. Slugs don’t have eyes and his sage mode is the only sage mode that doesn’t change your eyes to the animal of your sage mode.

I’m pretty sure Wood Style allows you to channel natural energy without the intervention of the great animal sages. It would make sense given Hashirama is a reincarnation of one of Hagoromo’s children, the “Sage” of Six Paths. Not to mention, his sage markings don’t indicate any animal shape or influence. It seems like he simply channels either raw natural energy, or he filters it through his wood style. Perhaps if he failed to channel natural energy properly he’d turn into a tree? Like how Naruto would’ve turned into a Toad if he failed his sage training.

He's a monkey sage. He learned it from Monkey Enma or his Father. Think about it. The rings around his eyes, look like Enma's rings. And he doesn't gain snake sage abilities. Also he does call it senju sage art. So possibly it's just his clans greatest technique.

Man there are some fun details throughout this theory that somewhat force me to double down on my idea of how his Sage Mode works; I believe its simply his being a reincarnated child with the Shinju Ability of Chakra Absorption through creation of Woodstyle, AND the Usage of ALL THREE of the Normal Sage Animals' Sage Abilities.... So Toad Sage Mode adding dexterity and movement finesse, Snake Sage Mode adding to the Control of Chakra through other things, and Slug Sagemode giving the consistent Healing Factor which MAY Offset any Poison related attachments from the Snake Sagemode, etc. I think the 3 balance eachother out and ALSO that having a Kekkei genkai to Basically Create a WorldTree without INTENDING to Create a World Tree or do any evil alien shenanigans... well he just LOOKS like the Perfect Goodboy Ninja... But I think he should also be capable of constantly having nature energy as long as he's alive and near anything alive like the ground or air... and Maybe all three Forms combined with his Kekkei genkai are how he absorbs without moving.... Since Madara can make a Double Susanoo PROBABLY just to have enough Chakra for the techniques he was using, since it was edo tensei.... WHY WOULDNT HE be Capable of Having PARTIAL Woodclones all over his body which can Emerge with expenditure of Chákrâ or just by having those Clones which think independently and Collect More Nature Energy also making it all more complex? A bigger question to me is that the toads trained the sage of six paths, so that means someone else might have been running around using sage mode before him. And if Toad sage mode as a concept was a thing that one could learn before hagaromo that could mean the same for the other sage modes. So did the naruto universe just have clans of sages throwing hands with each other back in the kaguya days? If so that could help justify how Kaguya somehow sneak attacked Ishiki even though she was way weaker than him, she had the help of sages. And if there were sages back then I can only hope that there was some epic battle between an army of sages and Shibai before he transcended.

I like this theory honestly it would also explain why wood release has its affinity to the tailed beasts. Its constantly bringing in nature energy to sustain itself which means it would pull the chakra from the tailed beasts "weakening" them

If he was a Snake Sage, 1) He would have Horns as that is the symbol of a perfect Snake Sage. 2) Orochimaru would most definitely know about it.

I’ve always been under the impression that Hashirama had a natural connection to nature. That is the reason he had the power of living wood, flowers, and the ability to create forests. The reason he could become a sage without any effort on his part. - The Hagaromo story line, which I believe is filler, gave us the theory that sages had to learn from an animal. Which is the only reason I doubted my theory.

Which would make sense and maybe where or how tsunade developed it was by witnessing her grandfather using it in tandem with his sage mode and thus she sought to improve upon it to make it better than his, then later sakura who also can use the same seal but it changes appearance depending on tte individual's chakra levels naturally or their gender or something?

If the snakes eat you when you fail the trial maybe that’s partly what jugo’s clan did to each other when they became rampant off the nature chakra inside them. However if jugo’s clansman prospered enough to even become a clan then maybe they were somehow cursed by the great white snake after establishing themselves as clan. I find it hard to believe they were always this volatile and had a propensity to destroy everything, including each other.

In times of constant war, each generation grows stronger than the last and hashirama was born around the end of the warring states period I just think he’s a perfect example of natural selection.

I like to think that his Sage mode is something that is passed down through the Senju clan along with everyone who gets wood release in a similar manner to the Uchiha tablet. Like only those with wood release can even get the information on where or how to train sage mode. (Either that or he found something of Asuras that gave him the answer) I also think that Juugos clan was likely started by someone without wood release or at least a very weak form of it that still managed to get an incomplete version of Hashiramas sage mode. The incomplete version would have ravaged their bodies and never stopped without some living matter like wood release to pull the energy into and because of this the energy immediately flowed through all of their descendants.

This was a good video, very impressed by your articulation and being able to convey the theory properly. I can see why people believe it, but I think it's a better answer than that, dealing with Hashirama only (though the theory could explain the overall Jugo & Hashirama questions). I think he just simply learned it because of his incredibly lucky genes and reincarnation background (+ knowledge of other sage users), being a wood user would mean he can create "natural energy" himself since he's possibly nature in human form. His chakra/blood is basically "source of life" which can create plants/wood which is nature combined with spiritual & physical energies = SM.​ I think his body contains and has all 3 "natural energy, spiritual & physical energies" which is why he didn't learn it from any known sources but naturally possesses it himself. Plus why he can do it so fast and has different markings with circle & dot on his forehead that appear when activating his SM. Also would explain how Madara stole his chakra & instantly got SM right?? Hashirama's DNA/Genes/Cells contained his SM (similar to Jugo's clan who have special cells), which is why Madara could steal his cells and come out with SM instantly (though he said he wasn't impressed and disappointed lol). If Madara tried to steal Naruto's sage energy, we saw what it did to one of the Pain's, and he'd only be stealing nature energy not SM like Hashirama's cells gave Madara. At 5:37 in the video Hashirama spoke the words: Shinsu Senju. The name Shinsu 澄 means "clear, pure, serene." To become clear - To become free of impurities and become clear. I believe that Hashirama achieved Sage mode in its purest form by learning to absorb nature energy without losing self control. I believe he surrendered to it without any hindrances. Hence the purest element that exudes life: wood 🪵. Hence he was able to create the 1000 hand Kanon: the Goddess of mercy.

I actually really do like the sun sage theory because, with the reincarnations it’s implied that the uchiha side represents the moon and the opposite of the moon is the sun. We know that because when the so6p splits his power the mark sasuke gets is the mark of the moon and more than just that, with the color based from the manga depictions Naruto has bright orange/yellow chakra all the way from his Kcm to the color of his rasengan while sasukes is always depicted as dark with susanoo being dark purple (deep blue in madaras case) like a night sky.

He's a Tree Sage. He learned to absorb nature chakra from the trees. The trees are special trees that the Ōtsutsuki brought with them. Absorbing their chakra changes his cells because they were alien entities, unlike any other natural thing on the planet. The connection between the sun God Ra and the trees is obvious - trees get their energy from the sun, and since he was becoming plant-like, so did he.

I always brushed it off as natural senjutsu. He uses wood style, probably the most natural release there is, It's not just natural, its alive. It just makes sense that hes able to draw in nature chakra because of that. He even summons wood creatures with his senjutsu.

Think Hashirama is a mix of Senju and Jugo clan. We already know it takes a large chakra pool to be able to control nature chakra. So what if jugo just doesn’t have the amount needed to control the constant flow of nature chakra. But Hashirama being senju has the massive chakra to control the constant flow which he manifests in his constant healing factor.

This is exactly the idea i had been thinking woodstyle is basically a long range version of jugo’s armor trees are sages because they are part of the natural order naturally so the senju clan when broken up hashirama decided to have different wives and created the clan the problem is that most couldnt control the power and died off or transformed completely to their sage beast mode i created a character that evolved the power and added emerald release to the power giving evolved skills like mirror release, absorption, blades, forging weapons and structures (green lantern naruto basically) who eventually goes on to master all sages becoming the dragon sage

I always thought hashirama would be a salamander sage, some salamander species have special cells that can regrow lost appendages and heal wounds faster than other species. Just seemed to fit, plus there is salamander summons in shippuden so not to far fetched

You mentioned that to become a snake sage you give up your greed and I couldn’t get that out of my head, because we don’t see Hashirama be greedy. He was willing to kill himself for peace, also for the first hokoge he wanted Madara and then when Hashirama captured the tailed beast he was just going to give the tailed beast away. I guess my point is that if we believe this selflessness personality trait then Hashirama’s choices make more sense.

One comment I have is that in regards to lady Katsuya, it's been explained that her healing ability only works in conjunction with Tsunade's chakra as seen when she was left dissected by Madara. So Hashirama would still be using his own chakra to heal, just this way it's redundant and costs him extra chakra to summon her. We see how taxing it is to even summon just 10% of Katsuya after all.. **Edit** Jiraiya was not an imperfect sage due to having insufficient chakra, he is literally stated to have barely trained it and still Pa remarked that he was one of the best to do it. Jiraiya was more interested in tits and traveling than mastering this technique when his arsenal is already so vast. Jiraiya is rather proud of his abilities so this makes more sense, unlike Naruto who trained sage mode whilst only having a whopping 5 techniques (shadow clone, rasengan, transformation, summoning jutsu and rasenshuriken).
