Here's my take. Remember when Kakashi died, and his dad's soul was in Purgatory waiting for him and didn't/couldn't move on until he made amends with Kakashi? Jiraiya's final words heavily imply that he was in a similar state of mind. So, what if Jiraiya didn't go to the Pure Land because he's also waiting in Purgatory seeking closure for his self-admitted failures? There are quite a few people he could be waiting for like Naruto, Tsunade, Orochimaru (of all people, I hope he isn't delaying his own afterlife to talk the body-snatching immortal snake man lmao)

I personally believe keeping jiraiya dead and not reincarnating him was the best choice because his death caused a lot of people to change , mostly Naruto , who became more mature after the incident ( actually he became really matured when he was fighting yahiko )

I’m gonna say it was out of being petty. Orochomaru was the Sasuke to Jiraiya’s Naruto, and if Sasuke hadn’t finally been brought around, his attitude in the same situation would have probably been “lol I don’t NEED that weakling here!” because he was jealous and didn’t want to acknowledge Naruto. So maybe Orochimaru was the same way toward Jiraiya, and due to Kabuto’s obsession with Orochimaru, he thought it would be disrespectful or something to treat Jiraiya as being worth resurrecting. Or maybe Orochimaru did still care about Jiraiya on some level and Kabuto didn’t want to disrespect him by doing that. I dunno, I just think explanations that rely on Kabuto choosing not to make more sense than explanations that rely on him not being able to.

I'm still trying to figure out how a clone acquired all of Jiraiya techniques. I'm pretty sure having the DNA of someone doesn't equate to acquiring knowledge of techniques. This was one of the things in Naruto that bugged me to death.

this video randomly made me wonder: can the Otsutsuki be reincarnated with Edo Tensei? Like, couldn't isshiki be revived and then implant a karma onto someone and just revive himself the good old otsutsuki way like that? Or do their souls even go to the pure land, maybe the pure land is simply another dimension that could be accessed through the rinnegan? We know there's multiple dimension from which even spirits can come from, like that ghost that could eat memories from the early Boruto chapters. I hope this will be a more explored concept in the future.

I don’t particularly like far fetched theories like this one but I’ll like the video anyway. I prefer more what I believe to be grounded theories for example “How did Hashirama die”? Usually I rationalize Hashirama’s death by saying he likely wasn’t killed because I personally don’t believe any shinobi of his era could rival him besides Madara so I just say he probably reached his Hayflick Limit. For those who don’t know what that is basically a cell “heals” by dividing to close whatever wounds you get however a cell can only divide so much before they die from maxing out its cellular division. This is the hayflick limit. That’s a poor explanation but that’s basically why we don’t live forever as humans. I think Hashirama maxed his shit the fuck out as unlike Tsunade who can turn her regeneration on and off Hashirama was so jacked he just healed naturally without needing to weave hand signs.

I have a theory: What if Sage Mode Users from the Toad, Slug and Snake Sages made a contract that their souls go somewhere else?

Something I always found interesting was I read a book by Maasai hatsumi was ninjas all identify their traits with animals and the three most dishonorable were toads/frogs, slugs/snails,and snakes/eels. This all deal with being overindulgent as opposed to disciplined and it’s very interesting how this concept is tied i to Naruto lore from ninja scrolls but never explained or mentioned. It really gives Naruto an I depth authentic ninja feel

The theory about Nagato controlling the souls of the Paths of Pain, has only one flaw. If I remember correctly, at one point in the anime, I think it was when Ibiki was interrogating one of the paths of Pain, we can see that at one point one of the bodies of the Paths was destroyed and Nagato had to replace it. With the body of the Path that Ibiki was currently interrogating. We can clearly see the girl that became the aforementioned Path of Pain being carried into a facility in a body bag in order to be made into a Path of Pain and we were led to understand that she was dead. Now if she was dead, that would mean that Nagato was not controlling the souls of the paths but merely filling the husks that were once their bodies, empty of any form of soul, life or consciousness with his own. If we go a little deeper on this we could theorize that Nagato was actually splitting up his soul between the paths, only keeping a small portion for himself, and that was the reason for which he was so weakened. This would also explain how all the paths had the Rinnegan, a dojutsu that only existed in Nagato at this point in time (there were no other dead users of the Rinnegan from which he could have gotten the eyes and slapped them into the Paths). We could theorize that Dojutsu's, being bloodline techniques, are not only linked with the blood of the user, but also with their soul and only one of them is a prerequisite of having and using the dojutsu, explaining how Kakashi got the Sharingan and was able to use it without having Uchiha blood and how Nagato had the Rinnegan slapped into him and was able to use it despite being an Uzumaki, not an Uchiha (seeing as the Rinnegan is the natural evolution of the Sharingan). Because Nagato put a part of his soul into.... Yahiko, let's say, Yahiko's eyes awakened the rinnegan, as the Rinnegan already had a connection with Nagato's soul, but not his blood (or physical body). This would also explain why Nagato was able to fight the way he did, with multiple "puppets" which he controlled, but we have not seen anyone else in the series do it. He was able to do it, because the Rinnegan was only linked with his soul, but not his blood (physical body), which allowed the Rinnegan to awaken in any body that Nagato's soul was inhabiting. So basically Nagato awakened the Rinnegan a minimum of 8 times: once in his own body, once in the bodies of 5 of the Paths, which puts him at 6 times, once in the body of the Path that was destroyed (7 times )and once in the body of the Path that replaced it, the one which Ibiki was interrogating (8 times). All other actual Rinnegan users we have seen in the series were Uchiha's (Obito, Madara, Sasuke) thus the Rinnegan linked to both their soul and their blood (physical body), thus they were not able to transfer the Rinnegan to other bodies even if they wanted to, as both the physical and soul... signature, if you like, on the Rinnegan was theirs. In regards to some of the reanimatios having Rinnegans, if I'm not mistaken (if I am, then I'm sorry, I'm looking forward to someone correcting me on this one), it was also stated in the anime that Obito, having helped Itachi with the Uchiha massacre, he actually took his time to collect the Sharingan's of the Uchiha's he's killed, thus by the time the war came, he had quite an extensive collection of Sharingan eyes, which he could have slapped into the reanimations. Once that done, injecting them with Hashirama DNA forcibly evolved the Sharingan's into Rinnegans. This, I believe, was also stated in the anime, that when combining Uchiha DNA with Senju DNA, the Rinnegan can be awakened because that would recreate the DNA of Hagoromo. As to why they only awakened it on one eye, this could have something to do with the fact that their souls were brought back from the dead and the link created by the Rinnegan with their souls was weaker due that fact, which only allowed them to awaken it in only one eye. Looking forward to hearing what everyone else thinks about this.

Jiraiya was cloned with all of his jutsu knowledge. And since he was cloned.. his soul never got to leave fully. IISHIKI found him and cloned him before the reincarnation happened.

What if his soul went to the toads mountain, where he would then become a perfect toad sage, and therefore be able to teach future toad sages. His soul wouldn't be in the Pure Lands to reincarnate and solves the reasoning why no one could Edo Tensei him. Just a thought. Still love your theories

I was with you until the rods chain the soul in the body. Sure, he might have trapped Nagato into his own body... but for how long though? I mean he would have needed to watch him die, figured to trap his soul and operate him with like a hive mind. Then on top of that how fast did he get the other bodies? Most of them were shown to needed to be recovered, operated on and then put into those pods.

Although I’m not the biggest fan of it I think it makes the most sense if the reason jiraya couldn’t be reincarnated was because he wasn’t dead. I know it’s out there but it fills in all the plot holes fairly logically, and I believe he wasn’t dead because he had the karma. I think it was implanted on him by urushiki during the time travel arc and never developed because there was never a time he would’ve ran low on chakra where it would activate due to his immense capabilities with chakra control. Tsunade and orochimaru have both effectively reached immortality so fitting with that theme jiraya is the last sannin to do so. This would also give him the ability to even train boruto on how to use the karma which we know he most likely gains control over because of the opening scene of the show. Other key points: - It would have been the most logical move for urushiki to plant a karma on someone in the past just in case and we know he touched jiraya - Kashin koji may actually be jiraya and he is choosing to forego his past connections because he knows of a greater threat which are the otsutsuki and chooses to step aside from his life (as a ninja does). We hear him say that he feels nostalgic when he’s in the leaf before he fights kakashi, which is strange because as a clone I’d assume he’d have no memories of jirayas life. (Yes mitski as a clone has memories of previous life’s but we know he kept having his mind wiped due to the drink he was given as a test by orochimaru) - It is still a possibility though koji is a clone and jiraya is still alive which would be mega weird. I think the most logical conclusion though if this theory is correct is that koji is jiraya with (or he had) the karma who chose to step aside from his life to save the world. - If koji is jiraya he probably had the karma removed or suppressed by Amado, which would explain why Amado already had medicine for suppressing the karma - I know the biggest question if he were a live would be why would he leave naruto? Jiraya has a theme of leaving his students when he knows they are cape-able. It happened with each of his students before so why would he treat naruto different. Can’t you just imagine a scene where he goes back to see naruto but instead sees the leaf destroyed and the moment where everyone is cheering him on for saving the village. At that moment naruto succeed at gaining everyone’s acknowledgment and is on the path to hokage, jiraya would recognize that. I know many people are not a fan of what they feel are plot points that potentially weaken a fan favorite characters sacrifice. These are just plot threads I noticed that were too coincidental to not connect together.

I always thought that Kabuto couldn’t get into the Hidden Rain in time because it was locked down and Kabuto wasn’t on good terms with the Akatsuki, but after the war there was plenty of time and the Hidden Rain had opened up, so Amado could recover the body/DNA.

I think only people who were killed in the attack on Konoha were revived by Rinne Rebirth. We know Madara planned to have it used only on himself, so it doesn’t revive all the people Nagato killed. Plus reviving so many people killed Nagato, which he knew would happen, so it’s likely he just hit the undo button instead of picking and choosing who he wanted to survive.

What if Jiraya at the end was so weak that he was unable to control sage mode and turned into a stone statue? Or he did that for himsef in order to prevent Pain making him a puppet, as we all know Pain liked the idea of making puppet from someone he was emotionally attached to. Jiraya at the end knew that Naruto will face Pain at some point, and knew how hard will be for him to fight against Pain when he is one of his puplets. Amado did collect his hand, but at that point he was not able to reanimate him, because he became one with nature. Plus Fukasaku himsef mentioned that althugh Jiraya was an expert in sage mode his nature energy control wasnt the best, the more he used sage mode the more toad signs appeared on him. This is possible because he doesnt have a grave in the hidden leaf graveyard, just some stones in the forest, because he became one with nature. So Amado now is unable to reanimate him, so he clones him, and if we look at the age of Koji Kashin the timeline maches. The other possibility is that Koji Kashin alredy existed when they started to use edo tensei massively, that means that at that time there were 2 souls with the same DNA, one is alive one is dead, so the edo tensei cannot work because the jutsu detects that the person with this DNA is still alive.

the word you could use to describe Jiraiya is hedonistic. He sought out pleasure in all of its forms and any way he could. he loved life and lived it to its fullest. he may not have done so ethically, but he made a large impact on a ton of peoples lives and his brush's with them always made them better people in the end. He Absolutly was a hypocrite but I don't think that'd be enough to send him to hell. I think it far more likely that Konan could have disposed of the rods and his arm properly.

Lets not forget that as he was sinking into the ocean and dying, he was talking quite badly about himself too. Granted, as a way to build up "The Tale of Naruto Uzumaki" but still very much reminding himself in his final moments that he did not succeed in just about anything that he set out to do. So I think his soul would very much be in limbo just like Sakumo Hatake's was during the Pain Invasion Arc. He is waiting to be able to speak with those who he had an affect on in his life, most chiefly Naruto himself. At least that is my theory on top of this all.

Kishi should have just said the reason was that Jiraiya knew how to release the Edo Tensei so Kabuto was afraid to bring him back and give the opposition a strong force. It would make sense since we know Jiraiya hunted Orochimaru for a while and he could have come across Orochimaru's research on Edo Tensei and read about how it worked.

Why would Jaraiya ascend to the pure lands? He's the living embodiment of regret. He would at lease stay in Purgatory until he'd spoken to Tsunade and Orichimaru. There's nobody in the pure lands he'd be keen to see (that he knows are dead) except Kushina and Yahiko (who he feels he let down) and hundreds (maybe thousands?) of people who he killed and regretted doing so. I also disagree that he didn't live up to his Ninja way, he never gave up as a writer (flopped book) or as a sensei (even though his students kept "dying") and sent a message with a crippled body whilst bleeding out. He is the OG Gutsy Ninja just not the definitive one and had flaw. Thinking he's in hell is a stretch no matter what you think the entry requirements are.

After hearing this theory I kind of came up with my own theory. I think Jeriah might’ve never died I think maybe when he got pretty deep in the water he summoned a toad and lived. That would explain why he couldn’t summon him. And maybe he went to do more meaningful things with his life and left the rest of Naruto because he believed in him. But this theory is probably not right. Just my little theory😅

Jiraiya never abandoned the orphans. He believed they were big enough and strong enough to take care of themselves. He rejected being hokage cause he knew himself. He wasn't a dignified person he thought he wasn't good enough for the job not because he was lazy or didn't care about the village. Infact he stuck by his goal of serving the village till the very end. He even threatened the love of his life had she chosen to betray the village. Jiraiya knew in some sense he was a vile person. He failed, a lot but not for the lack of trying. And he wasn't a model parent for Naruto but he taught him more than anyone else could. He imparted his tenacity into Naruto who was already bull headed but jiraiya gave him a direction. In death he knew he taught the child that was stronger than anyone because of his ninja way. Because of what he had gone through. Jiraiya knew he fulfilled his Destiy.

I think my theory works best! Jiraiya is just a very badass and outstanding person, which he has often said about himself. He made the qin-gon jinn in a way. Jiraiya was a Sage and may have found a way to bind his soul to heaven or to prevent his soul from ever being abused or manipulated in any way. that he can be completely free and independent in life afterwards. He didn't want to have any shackles in life and after his life too. I always imagine the opening with Jiraiya sitting at a table on the green meadow and writing a book. Maybe this is his heaven and he has made sure that no one can take him away from it.
