A quick measurement to spot fake copies of li-ion cells.
Samsung, Sony, LG and Panasonic all publish cell specifications. Use just one of these characteristics to determine whether you have a genuine cell.

Very usefull, just starting out on the build your own battery path, the pitfall isn't technical its the starting out with duff cells in the first place. All we are left with is internal resistance on pre buy batch so be it and thank you for providing that gold dust for the rest of us.

Hello Tom: I need to buy cells Sanyo/Panasonic NCR 18650 GA, 3,7 V, 3500 mAh. Was gonna buy them on Aliexpress, "Battery Pack Store" (USD 1.89 per cell), but reviews of customers said that they have only measured 2450 or 2000 mAh instead of 3500 mAh. Also it says "Made in China" instead of "Made in Japan" on the batteries. Where to buy Sanyo/Panasonic NCR 18650 GA good price, safe and not fake, would you know? Thank you.

This video is very timely and spot on. I have purchased cells from Ali sellers on numerous occasions, as well as lots of other items. I have become pretty proficient at the dispute process, which generally works. Recently I purchased a handwarmer listed as 10,000 MAh, and although that tested out to 5,200, I did not bother to dispute as I knew it would be impossible to sell a 10,000 MAh handwarmer for $11.00, and I just wanted to rebuild it with proper 21700 cells, which worked out well. But you have nailed the feedback. I also noted that their system is rigged, and seems to cull the negative feedback. Your advice to 'test' every seller with a small pre-purchase order is spot on.

It seems to be the fact that New 18650 cells have a higher internal resistance and after a view cycles it will drop. This information comes from trusted EU retailers and Nitecore (charger info and Battery). How is your experience to that ?fact?... Thanks for this video anyway!

@MountainParameters
@MountainParameters 4 жыл бұрын
@@crazytom Thanks, that's something that is good to keep in mind. Over all the years I've been dealing with them, I've had to submit a number of disputes. In fact I just had one resolved yesterday over one of those common battery holders that you use for testing cells. Most of the listings say '21700' as one of the cell types, but you cannot fit a 21700 cell into them unless you take it apart and modify it. So, although it was only $9.75 with the additional shipping, I decided to just submit a picture with the dispute. They accepted it with no further questions. I seem to recall having one or two disputes that they did not accept, and I get the impression it sometimes depends on how well the person viewing it can actually understand the problem. I'm also guessing they look at our purchase history and see if it indicates the account seems to launch disputes that exceed some metric or mean that they have established (I'm guessing that over the last 5-7 years I have spent between 10-15K spread over hundreds of orders, most of which have been fine). It could be as simple as if you account history shows you are below their established mean, they are more likely to allow your dispute?
@crazytom
@crazytom 4 жыл бұрын
@@MountainParameters yes I'm sure they have a complaints "dashboard" that helps them decide if you're vexatious and I agree that it depends on who adjudicates... sometimes a refund with little fuss and sometimes rejected despite overwhelming evidence. I really cannot trust this process as I'm pretty confident I'm not the only one complaining about a product fault. Ali knows this and only they know this data. I spend ~$4K each month with them.
@MountainParameters
@MountainParameters 4 жыл бұрын
@@crazytom Sounds like we have a similar outlook on things, thanks for the comments. Over the years you tend to find some trusted sellers that you patronize. In the meantime you're trying to minimize potential losses by not ordering anything too expensive. And actually, as an update to the previous post where I though I had received a bad batch of NCR18650B cells, I noticed the load tester was not reading voltage properly. I checked the leads and it was not due to them. Once I corrected for the voltage problem, the cells appeared to have 3100 MAh at a 3V cutoff. So in this case the problem appears to be the load tester (from Ali of course), and not the cells after all. Right now it appears as though the only legit way to get cells shipped to North America is via UPS and perhaps DHL, and my supplier has indicated you should aim to ship at least 10kg to make the resultant shipping costs per cell worth it.
@crazytom
@crazytom 4 жыл бұрын
@@MountainParameters Yes.. I always check across multiple electronic loads if there is an anomaly. I ask all suppliers to ship DDP (Delivery Duty Paid). About $65 for the first Kilo and around $25 per extra 0.5kg IIRC. That way they sail through customs and import checks.

I'm not disappointed that the listing was taken down. It just goes to show that Aliexpress are listening to you. However, it is likely that the seller will be back under another name. I'm having the same problems with silver oxide button cells for my watches. There are so many counterfeit cells that it's hard to tell wheat from chaff, and it can be even tougher to work out which is which, that it is with the 18650's!

Wow, he spotted fake, Wow. Have you ever heard word "datasheet"? Try to find internal resistance there, you'll find resistance "UP TO" so, 17 mOhms looks more likely. Before making any assumptions about fake you need to learn little more. And btw, most "fakes" on aliexpress and others are not fakes but unconditioned goods from same factories stolen or scrapped for bad production. Whole butch, but it doesn't mean all of them are bad. It could be good parts but doesn't fit this part number no more.

I had the same experience. I have bought 200 cells panasonic 3400mah but end up with 1100-1200mah. So I have tested all of them and showed Aliexpress the proofs and guess what they told me in dispute: If you dont like them resend them back to the seller otherwise no refund... But thats not possible bcos cheapest shipping EU to China is about 80$ per 1Kg if they even allow you to send batteries they are special dangerous cargo. So I have lost the dispute but at least I have 200 shitty cells hah...

Robert, I have done the same, but got lucky. The one thing I did do was go through the forums such as Budget Light Forum, and there was an Ali Seller on there that many had tried and tested. I've used that seller twice for large orders: one for 21700 cells and one for 1865 cells, and they have tested to spec. Now I am going to go off and test a bunch of the cells that I still have have previous Ali Express purchases based on Tom's information here, and keep my fingers crossed.

@@MountainParameters Well Im using Liitokala Lii 500 and Im pretty sure its the best one. You can see rough inner resistance and do Nor test which is charge, discharge, it never failed and I have bunch of them second year. Btw there is also new clone Fikida F4 dont use it ever! I have 4 of them and 2 burned instantly and last 2 are not working properly at all, only at 300ma loud and even that is very wrong. But if you want specific voltage you can use battery capacity tester ZB2L3 (HW-586) Aliexpress its like 3$ from China (2-3 months if you even get it) or look locally. If is not enough for you look for battery capacity tester 150W or 180W or 200W etc its about 20-40$ from China but the basic version 150W is good.

Learn from my mistake. These Panasonic NCR’s are some of the worst batteries designs ever. I should’ve read the spec sheet before buying them. Bought 4 of em, all tested to within ~3400 mAh twice, so they were real. Problem is... they have a storage temp of 50°C (122°F). They were used in a headlamp that was inadvertently left in the back seat of parked car. Headlamp wasn’t exposed to direct sunlight but it was summer time and the car can get really hot. Anyways the internal protection layer (aka safety feature) disabled the batteries. All 4 of them showed 1~0 varying volts. The jump start trick with a fresh 4.2v battery for 10 minutes didn’t work. Voltages would drop down to near ~0v immediately and no charger would charge them. I had them for a couple months. They were good and had lots of power but I will never buy these again.
