With "Metamorphoses" for 23 solo strings the 80-year-old Richard Strauss expressed his mourning for the shaken cultural landscape in 1945, only a few weeks before the end of World War II. It is a work of no orchestral splendor, no lavishness, but one of complete focus on the essential. Such music had never before been written by Strauss. The Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen is a guest of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra.
