Jacque Brel song “J’arrive” is truly one of the biggest gut punch. You see he died quite young, he wrote that song when he knew he was dying. He’s imagining his friends, family and lovers at his funeral, chrysanthemum is the traditional flower at a funeral. A big recommend

Faux, il n'était pas encore malade : Jacques Brel est mort le 9 octobre 1978. Son cancer avait été diagnostiqué le 5 novembre 1974. Brel et son cancer ont vécu quatre années ensemble. Deux dates ont marqué l'évolution de la maladie dans son corps.

For me this is one of the most beautiful love songs ever. Jacques Brel finally left France (in fact he was Belgian) and took his boat to French Polynesia and lived there until his cancer caught up with him. He has a fantastic song book, well worth looking into. Thank for publishing this song.

I think this is one if the most beautiul songs ever written. The lyrics are so poetic. They had Rod McCuen translate his lyrics to English, but they always fell short. The other song most known to Americans is Seasons in the Sun. The French title is something like Le Moreband. Again the French is much better.

@@musashimiyamoto586 Your are so true about this, some of his songs have Brussels and Belgium as the background of the song, and it really is impossible to translate as it is so rooted to his own cultural background. This is arguably the most beautiful video of the most heart wrenching song of my native Belgium's number one musical monument, Jacques Brel (pronounced Jacq, by the way without 's'). I've watched it countless times ( and will many more) and always get a lump in my throat and now, having been away from my lovely country for many years, a massive tsunami of homesickness every single time. Thanks for this and your kind words. Deeply appreciated. By the way, you might want to check out songs like 'Ces Gens-lá (Those People) and 'Mon Plat Pays' (My flat Country,) of which he also has a version in my native Flemish (Mijn Vlakke Land). I consider it to be one of the most beautiful homages to my native Flanders, the northern, Flemish speaking half of Belgium. Have a nice day

Yeah, the greatest strength of Jacques Brel is his ability to give so much emotions to his songs. And that’s why it’s better watching his live performances. Now try to watch « Amsterdam, ces gens-là, au suivant, la valse à mille temps (my personal favorite), quand on a que l’amour, le plat pays ( or « de vlakke land » he sang it in Dutch too).

@wantstofly Well like many of us, I thought initially that these lyrics were inspired by a romantic breakup. Yet a while back, I had heard on the French radio waves a recorded interview of Brel denying that version and explaining that the song was written for a good female friend of his who was dying. Fast forward to a few days ago, I found an article in the French press saying that in fact that the song was for 'Miche' his wife. The article was published in Gala on October 25, 2018, title: 'Jacques Brel a bien chanté "Ne me quitte pas" pour son épouse et non pour sa maîtresse'. When Brel left his boring managerial job at his dad's cardboard factory to find fame as a singer in Paris, he also left his wife (Thérèse Michielsen, 'Miche') and his two (or three?) daughters behind. Brel was a sensitive and tormented man so I would not be surprised that these lyrics were written out of guilt and remorse after all. Could have he twisted the plot to get his pain out..? We will never know. Ita missa est -

Love how sensitively you react to this classic song from 1959. In French the name Jaques, or Jack, is not pronounced Jax because the "s" is silent, yeah, crazy French grammar. By the way, I invite you to listen to Wyclef Jean's rendition of this song, at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ba54damcya7dgok.html, who, being a French speaker from Haiti, can understand the lyrics and the depth of this Belgian song, and gives it his own intensity, throwing in a bit of English here and there!

for knowledge purpose in french most of the time e at the end of a word is most of the time said as a short "eu" and when there is an S in the end of a word it's mostly not said it's most of the time the sign of plural but there is too some word that have it naturaly like the "pas" that mean "not" in many case more or less for the title ( language can't be translated literaly) ne= don't/ me=me/ quitte= leave/ pas= not! it's mostly a word by word translation like i said no language can be translated literaly after the way it's said have too a meaning the meaning of his in this song is "please" so it's "don't leave me." said to be understood "please don't leave me."
