Every liberal I know is pushing for mental health reform, and gun control. The two go hand in hand. They also point out that most gun deaths are caused by self-infliction. Which is why we're pushing red flag laws (i.e. that bag of mushrooms and Ace Ventura solution). So that whole second bit just... falls kind of flat if you actually look at the liberal position for 2 seconds with any kind of clarity at all.

If you think there's not a need to be able to resist an oppressive government in 2024, you're wrong. If you think it's not worth trying just because it'd be a lopsided fight, I'll remind you that the entirety of the U.S. military couldn't beat half-trained goat farmers from the Middle East with 80 years out-of-date weapons in Afghanistan. All the most advanced fighting force in the history-of-ever got us was $20 trillion dollars in debt and Afghanistan still controlled by the Taliban.

To be fair most of us say people with guns are much more likely going to use them to hurt themselves or someone they care about before they ever use them to defend themselves. But funny jokes none the less
@quaternio8 күн бұрын
That is an inverted framing of the moral reality. Those people who hurt themselves or others still have that degree of destructive intent. Guns being absent doesn’t change that, but rather makes it so you have virtually no plausible defense against them, unless you just happened to be born physically strong and violent enough to defeat them with brute force. A firearm equalizes the capability to make the other guy fall, even if you’re 90 pounds.
@Tattlebot7 күн бұрын
@@quaternio Studies also do not calculate the victimization by fist or blade which is deterred by the victim possibly being armed. There is a degree of invisible deterrence which is difficult to calculate, because there are too many factors in comparing the US to a disarmed society. This continues beyond prevented attacks to the prevention of the social costs of antisocial behaviour, like threatening confrontations.

Deeply embarrassing take. The societal and psychological impact of gun violence far exceeds that of flu deaths. When grandpa kicks it from a flu at 82 it's sad, but people move on. When gunfire rips through your community, traumatizing your kids and leaving literal and figurative wounds... you can't put an estimate on the extent of the tragedy. It's not just about the "number of dead" it's also about the survivors.

@newbrookland17 сағат бұрын
Agreed, but what's your suggestion for achievable gun control legislation?
@bitrotter8 сағат бұрын
@@newbrookland thanks for asking, i have a lot of ideas, but the problem is federalism. doesn't matter what a state like NY legislates. It could be the best laws possible that respect the 2A while also correcting its shortcomings and treating this issue as the public safety issue it is. Problem is we're sandwiched between N states that not only don't give a shit about gun laws but actively make it easier to traffic them by making it harder to track them. When the right complains that "gun laws dont work" they are correct and it is entirely BY DESIGN. The only real solutions are federal and there's nearly no appetite for that in DC. Ideally laws there would redress the serious structural issues that make it impossible for gun manufacturers to produce obscene numbers of guns, market them and sell them without regard for public safety. Gun tracking and licensing and training coupled with regular mental health checks to maybe help keep them out of the hands of the suicidal. Ultimately too we need to just cut down the # of guns in the wild. Not saying any of these are simple solutions, but they are actionable.

When looking at the proportion of gun-related suicides, the top states are also current and historically red states, but the highest deaths shift from Southern states to Western/Mid-Western states. @@JeffreyKarlanThere is no confusion amongst honest people with a little research. “Well regulated militia” is a term of art in political philosophy at the time of the US founding. It means a highly prepared and capable group of non-professional combatants. Switzerland held the same idea at the time, and you can see what that looks like in their example today. Militia has never been confusing in this context. You are the militia. We all are. What we learned though is that militia (ordinary working people) only want to defend their own land-not march off to war for economic interests, and as such, mere militia were not enough to satisfy the aspirations of the federal government. Add a little time to those unchecked aspirations, and now we have the abysmal war machine that Eisenhower predicted.
